I've never used tecnic lego, but I always though pirate ship rides were powered by moving wheels in the base with the boat moving freely but attached by the pivot at the top. I've no idea if that would work in lego, but it would stop the need for that big arm up the side. Hope that makes sense. I'm just happy I was able to start and finishes the video on the same day, lol. See you on Monday

I was kinda hoping you would do a ride like this, Robin! This kind of ride actually was one of my favorites when I was younger, as I'm more adverse to rollercoasters (height and loops lol) -- I think you caught the spirit of this almost perfectly. Using the Dutchman ship -- perfect! I think if the motor section is hidden out of view, this will look pretty darn cool in the setup!

I have a fun idea, maybe you can add water under it (Lego water, so probably just blue plates) so it looks like the flying Dutchman is floating oversea, cause that is what it does in the legend. And maybe to get onto the ship, there would be a plank, but instead of from the ship, it comes from the ground

The ride mechanism actually looks very prototypical, I have seen rides with exposed mechanisms before and the pillars look right at home giving it that raw theme-park ride look. A modification I would recommend would be to perhaps make the deck a green plate as the shit itself would be an ancient mouldy floating wreck and it would make it seem more like a ghost ship. If was to name this ride I would call it "PIRATE PETE'S PUTRID SWING"

I can’t think of a simpler more effective mechanism. It’s elegantly brilliant. The jerkiness is due to your rubber “damper” causing a slight delay in the pivot motion but it’s just temporary as you notice. Well done.

Love the ride Robin. I do have a suggestion about your ghostly captain, when you place the ride have the Captain's face turned out towards the fairgrounds so the waiting riders will see his scary face as they are waiting. O can't wait to see the completed fairgrounds, and look forward to your next ride build. Have you thought about doing a kiddie sized carousel? You could put maybe 4 different animals and have it spin. That would look cute.

Fun fact: There's this quite popular Dutch amusement park called De Efteling which features a ride like the one you built which is called "De Halve Maan" literally meaning "The Half Moon" or I guess the proper term would be "The Crescent". My stomach didn't like that ride either. The park also includes a ride called "De Vliegende Hollander" which would be translated into English as "the Flying Dutchman" although technically Holland is just 2 out of 12 provinces, but since it houses the capital, the government, the biggest port, etc. it is the most important bit of the Netherlands hence why my country is known as Holland in many languages around the world unfortunately. As you can probably guess, I'm not from those two provinces. :P Anyhow, to get back to the "De Vliegende Hollander" ride in De Efteling, it's a rollercoaster that partially goes through some water to put it simply. Great video btw! =D

Looks awesome! Needs a parrot and a statue of a mermaid on the front, maybe a treasure chest and skeletons somewhere too, either on or off the ship. The jerky start up in my opinion is probably something similar to the archers paradox, all the long pieces are flexing and it takes a bit to sort itself out. I could be wrong though.

  • @icemorons5678

Nice design with the whimsical pirate ship! I think the jerkiness at the start of the ride is a function of the direct connection between the motor mechanism and the long moment of the ship's movement away from the rotation axis. I think you'd be better served by disconnecting the two. You want the motor to provide a "push" for the ship, but then let the ship swing by itself. Once it swings backward, it will again be pushed. Perhaps keep the rubber bushing, but have it rotate on an axle. Have a technic liftarm attached to the ship that it can contact only when the ship is in the backward half of the swing.

Now that’s a rather creative use of that Spongebob set. All it needs now is a small ticket booth, a few parrots and skeletal remains (or any other pirate decorations) and the base for it to fit into your city. And could a seat fit under where the ship’s wheel is? It looks like it could work with someone going “Well this isn’t a very comfortable seating area” sitting there. And the motorized mechanism you made for this is pretty neat for someone who isn’t much of a Technic except. I’m excited to see how it will look in your fair ground.

  • @mariovelez578

You could use a string instead of a long axle that goes to the top, and have the gears push the string down. I think it would also make it more smooth since the string can have some slack, and you can put the string inside the pillar to hide it

Hi Robin, congrats on another great build! Have you thought of using the ghost captain as the ship's figurehead (or rather minifigurehead)? It would require some modifications to the bowsprit assembly but I think it could help balance the build which is currently a bit stern-heavy, and make the minifigure more visible. Plus, it's fitting for a ghost ship to be unmanned, don't you think? Cheers!

Lengthen the arm so that the stroke gets longer. Pushing and dragging the boat a little higher at each end stroke. I think that would be more realistic as well as slowing down the motion a bit too.

@@RobinHoodBricks I agree with @Michael Gleffe. In fact, this ride act like a pendulum and the duration of the swing depends on the length of the pendulum and not on the mass. If with the motor you force it to swing to another frequency than its own frequency (given by the length) then you will add stress to the structure.

I think you should make a harbour dock for the people to 'board' the ship, that doubles as a housing for the huge gear. Also on that platform can be the ticket seller for the ride. Maybe you can also replace the black 'iron barred' posts that hold the ship with wooden beams made of 2x2 round bricks filled with technick axles. I think the ride looks great, and the boat certainly looks better then the original. Maybe a pirate in the crow nest, but I've got no idea on how to attach it...

The ship looks amazing. I'd consider having the ride on a water base like it would spray the riders each time it goes back and forth. Alternatively maybe its base is just painted to look like water. There is probably some kind of trick that could be done with gears or spokes rotating against something at the base. Maybe with two gears turning in opposite directions with a peg? An underride option would be to run a post to one end of the ship down into the ground and then have it hooked up to the offset driving peg you are currently using mounted underground near the center of the ride. Some kind of old dock kind of look and decor would probably work well for an operator booth. or maybe one of those old prison pieces they had in the old pirates sets. I'd check to see how the ride looks at a slower pendulum speed to simulate the old ponderous galley feel.

“Arghhh... my ship rocks!” Nice size you’ve made there. With the mechanism, I’d been wanting to make something like this and was wondering if a wheel would work like the real ones. Issue as usual with LEGO is how to shrink the mechanism. Closest I can think for size and linkage is the rollercoaster wheels at the top. But you need to then translate that to back and forth and also hope it’s not putting too much strain on the gears. Oh the joys (and fun) of technic! Great moc sir as always. Look forward to seeing it finished with all the trimmings

I'm not much of a technic person either so I wouldn't know how to suggest an improvement on that. I know you don't have your base made to hide the motor but a set of stairs for yhe minifigures to get on and off the ride would be a amendment. I've recently noticed I've expanded my vocabulary since watching your videos, I use the word gubbins at my work now, haha. I too had a similar experience at Thorpe Park as a child where I thought I was going to be sick on everyone! Great work as always Robin, if the mechanism is towards the wall I don’t think you’ll see it, you normally see the workings on rides anyway, they just make them a design feature

Love this build! Very creative from start to finish. One suggestion, slow down the ride? If it was actual size/speed ratio I think everyone would get sick!! Keep up the excellent creativity

Looks super cool, I would say best ride so far! Naively I would say: it works fine, turn the technic part to back and problem solved; though I am 100% sure there is a cleaner technique to motorize it, as an engineer i would keep puzzling :-).

i remember when I was a kid and went on a rollercoaster for the first time. didnt care it. afraid. but I was a kid. hehe. neat ride choice for your lego city. looks good as a ride and a PG rated cartoon pirate theme show or movie. the flying dutchman myth works good for the lore too for the inspiration for the ride.

Unfortunately, I can't say whether it works, but some have a drive with tires under the ship. The question is whether it can be implemented in Lego. So maybe you wouldn't see so much of the linkage. I hope you don't get scared but it's the right flying Dutchman. These days, pirate trips are not worthwhile for him. So he teaches the creeps in his ride. And there is also money :-)

Those rides usually have a tire underneath the ship that pushes the ride to get it swinging. Can you construct the motion mechanism to attach to the side or the bottom of the ship? You would barely notice it.

you could hide all the mechanism under the ground under the boat , just have a lift arm stand out under the boat pushing the the boat front to back

So the mystery ride is a pirate ship! Cool! Your story about the pirate ship was like my dad on a Harry Potter ride! He was so pale! I love the swinging affect! For a few suggestions you could maybe raise it up on a blue baseplate. Then you could add in a little island and you could also add in a barrel on the same island with a monkey, some palm trees and of course a treasure chest! This is my favorite ride besides the western shooting game! I feel like your fairground is going to be exactly like Legoland!

I'm not sure if anyone else mentioned this yet... Maybe make an "A" frame to hold up the ride, by using 4 1x2 hinges and 2x2 hinge plates at the bottom. And then 4 more hinge bricks and 1 x 2 hinge plates at the top... And just have the ride load and unload from the one side...

A more discrete quiet and pole missing way would be to mount an axle with two wheels and tyres underneath the boat. The motor turns the axles and the wheels push the boat back and forth. Thats how the actual rides work, watch a youtube video of mechanics of thorpe parks monkey banana ride. The spinning tyre just rocks it back and forth underneath

@@RobinHoodBricks (im not at all complaining or judging whatsoever, this setup is fantastic) surely sticking a wheel on an axle is far easier then these gears, linkage and ratios etc? We spoke briefly last week about “ Lego stealing your ideas” Got the pacman- they stole that from your dodgems without a shadow of a doubt. The mechanism, design and parts are all exactly the same. The designer watched you make that and decided to put pacman ghosts and not magnets on it. You want to really call them out on that

I had a very similar experience as a kid. Hadn't realised the pirate ship I'd seen was gearing down at the end of its swing... So wasn't aware of how high it actually went. Deeply regretted it, still makes me feel sick. Good use of the spongebob ship, I've got one, must have been super cheap at some point as I have no interest in sbsp.

A galley is a ship's kitchen so technically calling them galley windows could be correct, although that part of the ship would probably be the captains quarters not the galley.
