LEGO 4789: AT Aquatic Mech - 2002 Retail Exclusive
I managed to find this bizarre little set from Alpha Team: Mission Deep Sea at a local garage sale and had to share it!

"This is why LEGO almost went bankrupt, making crazy weird pieces for each sub theme." While I can agree that that's probably the case, or at least part of it, I also miss those old days where it felt like every set had at least 1 unique piece, or if not unique, only shared with 1 or 2 other sets, it made opening up even the smallest box something special as something new was added to your bits box.

I have this set. I'm fairly sure it indeed came with the regular visor as shown on the box, not the specialized diving one. There was also an Ogel mutant ray that may also have been retailer-exclusive. I always pitted these two sets against each other due to them both being "special" by not being featured in the main promo material.

I remember that weird foot piece! I had the set 4790 there, the weird dinosaur thing and the tiny powersuit with that piece. I think i was really into this particular verison of the theme, i love the aesthetic of the hero side and the creepy vibe of the villains. There is just something about that yellow color scheme from the modern submarine culture that i just love, all nautical things really. The sea just has a hypnotic attraction to me for some reason, maybe it's that inherent sense of adventure? Idk, anyway these were just great sets! I wish i still had them around, somewhere.

The one thing I don't like about garage sales is that you don't always know what you're going to get, especially if they only advertise "we have lego" so it can be really hit or miss. This one was pretty much gold besides a lot of wrong pieces, which pretty easily replaced.
@thomasbagola4314
2 жыл бұрын
Oh I can imagine, but with them you can actually look in the box; whereas Marketplace unless you get in person it's hard, even that being said, if it's a huge haul there is almost always non lego hidden in there waiting for you 🤣

i remember that there was a knight series which didnt look like lego at all and was build almost only from exclusive pieces. One big chest piece that you can do nothing with 8 ball joint parts that you can do nothing with, a sword, a head, and a shield. Only detaling was made with few small lego parts
