Hamamatsu, Japan, November 28, 2011 - Coming off an impressive victory against world No. 3 Italy on Sunday, No. 6 Cuba continued to play beyond their ranking by knocking off top-ranked Brazil 3-2 (17-25, 25-22, 25-23, 20-25, 15-12) on Monday in 2011 FIVB Men’s World Cup third round action.
Cuba’s leading scorer was Fernando Hernandez Ramos who notched 22. His captain Wilfredo Leon Venero put up 16 points. Isbel Mesa Sandobal had a great day on the defensive end with six of Cuba’s 15 blocks. Cuba was outblocked 8-1 in a disastrous first set, but in the other sets they were the superior blockers by a count of 14 to 6. Leading Brazil in scoring was the captain Gilberto Godoy Filho (Giba) also with 21, many of those in critical moments. Brazil outscored Cuba 107-102 in the match, but still lost.
To start, Brazil’s Leandro Vissotto Neves served up an early ace and Sidnei dos Santos Jr (aka Sidão) posted two blocks including one on the lefty Hernandez to go ahead 7-4. Brazil had luck on their side too, as a Murilo Endres serve hit tape and trickled over for an ace to go ahead five. Giba and Vissotto brought two more blocks, as Cuba’s attackers had difficulty getting in any rhythm, Brazil moving out to a 16-9 lead. Sidão’s third block on Cisnero Henry Bell was the team’s seventh in the set, making it 23-12, and despite a Cuba mini-run late, Brazil took the first set easily 25-17.
The second set was more competitive with Hernandez throwing down two aces, his second to bring it to an 11-11 tie. Cuba then edged ahead on Yassel Perdomo Naranjo block on Giba, but Brazil’s own blocking still frustrated Cuba, with Hernandez pounding the referee’s chair in anger having been denied by Vissotto. Brazil would tie at 19 as Leon fired a spike wide, trying to avoid aggressive blockers. Hernandez put the team on his back with three key spikes to close, 25-22, finally evading Brazil’s blockers.
In the third, Cuba got their own block going with Perdomo and Mesa posting stuffs on Vissotto and Murilo respectively to go up 7-3. They hung onto that lead until a spirited Giba run-down, leaping his own bench to retrieve a ball, helped spark a Brazil run. Eventually they came back to tie on a flying spike from none other than the colorful captain, Giba himself, 15-15, but Leon and Hernandez shrugged it off, putting Cuba back ahead 21-17 punctuated by a Leon stuff block on an attacking Giba. In the end, a Vissotto net serve gave Cuba the set 25-23, making it 2-1 in their favor.
Brazil looked to their captain in the fourth, and he responded with back-to-back aces to help them go up 8-5. Wallace de Souza chipped in with a block on Leon and two hard spikes, helping the team way ahead 17-11. Hernandez drove a hard spike to the corner to come back within four, but Brazil went to Giba for two key spikes late, and then to Murilo to finish the set 25-20, evening things at two sets all.
In the tiebreaker Bell helped put his side ahead by three with a spike and a block back-to-back at 7-4, but he’d deliver an errant serve, and Leon followed with a spike that just missed to let Brazil back within one 7-6. But it was blocking that won it late for Cuba as Yoandry Díaz Carmenate put a key stuff on Theo Lopes to go ahead 13-10, and Mesa’s sixth block of the contest clinched it 15-12 (and the match 3-2) denying Murilo at the net.

@@4533793 Also, Oreol Camejo can set and he is the Outside hitter of Zenit St Petersburg and Hierrezuelo is a natural setter, and they can bring back the famous 6-2 from the 90s. If they kept together and didn't defect they'd be top 4 in the world. They won Silver in B2B tournaments between 09-10.

Cuba also beat Brazil in 2001 World cup before the main players stayed in Belgium to not return. Otherwise the Brasil domination in that decade would not happen. In fact If that team would have stayed Cuba would have being winning until now with Simon and Leon Generation. Yes, for 20 years.

@@Lovistarful Brazilian know they would have been beaten. Look no one know this. Right after the 2004 Olympic when Brazil beat 3-2 to Italy, just a month later Dennis told Italians, you know we would have been the champions. So, they set a match Cuban team in Italy vs Italy Cuba won 3-2. Then they called Brazilians and set a Match Cuban team beat them 3-1. The former coach of Brazilian women during the 90s became the man coach in 1999 when he saw that Cuba beat him in 2000 and 2001 world cup he said that he didn't have a good luck because of Cuba. I think all of this says it all.

En los 90's cada país tenía un jugador espectacular: Países Bajos, España, Bulgaria, Rusia, Italia, Yugoslavia, Brasil, EE.UU., Cuba. De estos, solo España no estaba en la élite pq Rafael Pascual era el único que jugaba. Aún así, vi varios juegos en ligas mundiales que España llevó a Cuba, Brasil, Rusia y Holanda hasta el tie-break, solo con Rafa Pascual.

Như dịch ở trên thì Cuba cấm các cầu thủ của họ được chơi tại các CLB nước ngoài. Vì vậy các super stars của họ đổi quốc tịch để chơi tại các clb nước ngoài

What happened to the old cuban team ?

They ran away to Europe/Brazil to live normal life and they're banned to play for Cuba NT because of that. Recently R. Simon got the permition back but Leal, Leon two biggest stars started a new life - Leal plays for Brazil NT and Leon plays for Poland (he has Polish citizenship, Polish wife and a daughter). Until Cuba won't let players to play in foreign clubs and play for NT despite that (like in normal country) they will never be strong.

El vivir tanto tiempo en otro país te dan el derecho a poder elegir la nacionalidad del país en el que habitas, en este caso León quiero nacionalizarse polaco porque vio más oportunidades de trascender ahí que con Cuba quiero pensar yo

Hace unos años, Wilfredo se casó con una niña polaca, tiene una hija polaca con ella, habla bien el polaco y está muy conectado con el polaco. Es polaco :)

@Mamba y todos los demas soy cubano y fui del equipo de voleibol de la generacion de los que se quedaron fuera de Cuba en el 2001. Los atletas cubanos se van de Cuba porque no pueden resolver sus problemas economicos a niveles normales. Tienes razon. El daño esta mas que hecho. Cuba pudo domimar por los ultimos 20 años

@@emanuelsanchez6596 el gobierno de cuba hasta hace muy poco no permitía q ningún jugador de ningún deporte q viviera fuera de cuba jugara para la selección nacional, para los comunistas todo el q se vaya ea un traidor, ahora han permitido algunos jugadores q ellos( el gobierno) decidan bajo unas condiciones q no todos estan dispuestos a cumplir.

Eso es lo que muestran los highlights, al final Hernandez fue quien anoto mas puntos en todo el partido (22), seguido por Giba con 21.
