Legendary Engines: The Mercedes / AMG M113 (And M113K) - The Versatile V8
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Introduced in the 1990s, the Mercedes Benz M113 is an engine which saw service in a huge variety of vehicles. From the compact C class, up to the G-Wagen, the M113 had anything from 280hp to 650bhp at its disposal, and featured a host of innovations.

@@schoumv6 If you want to see why the M113K and the LS3 are very different experiences, look up the their respective torque curves 😀 The LS3 has the same shape of curve of most N/A engines, where it builds, and builds, and builds, then tapers off and falls to the red line. The M113K creates so much torque at very low revs that there is no smooth curve, it's like a step function shortly after idle, that then barely diminishes all the way to red-line. Result? The engine always feels potent, you rarely have those "ah, if only I'd been in the right gear" moments.

M113 for ever 🖤🤘🏽
CLK55 AMG ,,,reliable , easy to maintain ,,and so smooth when revving at high rpm.. a great GT cruiser especially when the auto transmission has been well maintained .

Yes. A fantastic engine! Just imagine it with a 7 speed DSG box, to release all of its potential. Love my C55, and unbelievable value for such fine German engineering
I have a CLK with the 4.3. Its fun, good on gas for a v8 and very reliable. Pushing past 230k miles with nothing but basic maintenance.
I have the M113 in my W220 S55. They really are a peach of an engine, sound incredible with exhaust mods. I've got secondary cats, resonator and muffler deletes, and it really is an incredible sound. Powerful, fairly economical when not booting it (7mpg when hammering it) and dont rev silly high which is one of the reasons it lasts and is reliable I believe.
Yes! Thank you so much for this video. I bought a C55 about 6 months ago and there isn't enough content on the M113
2001 ml55 amg here and i have 260k original miles. still running great.. going to run it to the ground
Your view of the M113 family echoes my own. Not only do they produce good power, regardless of displacement, but they are very, very solid and reliable. This includes the M113K version. I've looked at several S430's and S500's with over 300,000 miles on them. Without exception, the engines and 5-speed transmissions have remained in good, solid shape. I was really amazed. I've seen M113K engines with over 200,000 miles on them, and they're in good shape as well. The M112 V6 version of this engine is just as reliable. I regularly see them with over 250,000 miles and still going strong. Where I have one difference with your presentation is the 5-speed transmission and the M113K engine used in the AMG cars, at least in the S-class. The S55 AMG actually uses a strengthened version of the 5-speed transmission. That version can easily handle the M113K's torque, as it was originally designed for the Maybach 57s's 738 lb-ft (1000 N-m) and was also used on the S600 twin-turbo and S65 AMG. Other than that point, I'd say your presentation was pretty spot-on.

My w203 c55 ! Love the sounds and feel of the m113!
The M113, while in reality probably was developed with some cost-cutting in mind (compared to the M119) ended up being a surprisingly fine engine family with excellent reliability and good power. Arguably the last "great" Mercedes V8 if you take reliability into account. The M156, while a nice, big-power motor, has FAR too many reliability issues to be considered as great overall. Go watch Legit Street Cars video covering the reliability issues, a former Mercedes master mechanic talking about the snapping head bolts (later fixed), worn lifters (kinda fixed on some versions) and failing cam variators (never really fixed). M113 all day long.

I actually sought out a CLS with the M113 engine because of it's reputation as being a bulletproof V8. The later M273 5.5 V8 gives an extra 80 bhp but has timing chain issues.

I love this series. Keep up the awesome work
So glad you mentioned the M155! The camshafts will actually fit into the M113 but it's not a straight swap; not many people have done it but it is a real badge of honour in the M113 tuning community! There was an aftermarket supercharger kit available from Kleemann that boosted the N/A 5.0 to around 450bhp. So there are some E500s pushing around with a supercharger and the 7-speed, but obviously that's not standard. I've had an E500 with the 7-speed for years; I'd struggle to replace it. It ticks so many boxes for me; it's quick off the mark when I need it to be, it's anonymous, it's comfy, it's economical for a V8. I can put the suspension in Sport2 and it handles well enough for fast country lanes, and in Comfort it will waft down motorways getting 30-31mpg. I've driven it at 150mph and it didn't break a sweat, at the other end of the spectrum I once did an economy drive out of curiosity and got nearly 39mpg by turning off the climate and cruising without CC at 55mph... Wouldn't want to do it all the time but you'd get just under 700 miles out of a tank! Sure, single figures if you hoon hard but you can get single figures in anything if you want.

M113K/M275 great video.
I'm enjoying your video series of the legendary engines, thanks for posting. I have a CLK 280 - 3L V6, I love how smooth the engine is and once you put your foot down the grunt sound makes me smile. The 7-speed gearbox is ok for cruising but a tad lazy if you want to get a move on. I have driven a CLK 500 and the delivery was smooth but much more of a rush. I’m considering a V8 for my next car.

Great video, I have the M113 AMG 5.4L in my 2000 W163 ML55 that I recently bought with only 50k miles.... full-time 4MATIC 4x4 body-on-frame SUV with hi/lo transfer case and sport suspension... not to mention 342bhp at 5750rpm and 400nm torque at 3000rpm... this thing goes 0 to 60 in 6.4 seconds, is great in all driving conditions, high speed, highway cruise or off-road... now I’m only saving up to do a stage 3 Kleemann turbo and tune to get it to 540 hp and 750nm ;)
Yes I love my E55 113k, it’s a luxurious fun car. Mine has 630 injectors Long tube headers LSD Forced Induction -Interchiller 83mm belt pulley an Intake kit a better TCU for faster shifting….plus much more. And I must say, it’s very enjoyable to drive.

Classic AMG V8s from that era. Shame the new C63 is going to become a 4 cylinder hybrid.
I really enjoy mine in my C43!
this is my favourite sounding v8 or at least the only one i know about
my 2001 ML430 with 73k miles drives like butter and surprisingly fast.
I've seen a guy in Poland driving an M113 swapped Nissan Patrol on 38 inch tires and the sound it made was honestly orgasmic and it tore through terrain like through tissue paper!
"Most unique!" Shirt was a bit mild too. Standards JayEmm, Standards!
Mercedes been putting excellent m112/m113 engines into cars that would rot away if you'd use them in any weather but dry. Just like leafs, they change color to brown for the winter. The engine would last longer than the rest of a car. Next generations had galvanized body panels, but we all know how much of a disaster M156 can be. So the question is: "Is SLK55 the most reliable car the world?"
Had a Turquoise 1999 C43 AMG with the white on black Designo leather, was a great car and although not as quick it was a much more relaxing car to drive than my B6 S4. should have kept it, they are going ballistic in price.
I recently added a 2000 SL500 to my fleet and "silky smooth" is an apt description of the driving experience of the m113. I am head over heels with that car
This certainly has its charms and muscle car feel, but the M156 after it is just so manic and additive that it seems even more exciting. Do miss not having a supercharger though
The M113K and mighty Bi-Turbo V12 are the Mercedes engines I covet. SL55 AMG and E55 AMG wagon would be my favourite M113 cars.
With a CL500, the M113 is a beautifully smooth and powerful V8. A joy to drive.
M113 and M112 were the last reliable engines MB produced.

I'm trading my bike for an 04 clk500. Drooling over that w202 c43 you showed. Had a C280 with an M104 in it. Which was STILL a great engine.
Very reliable engines. Usually the M113 outlives whatever car it was put into. Hence why they are dirt cheap at salvage yards. MB diehards hate it but IMO it’s an one hell of an underdog
awesome vid however the c55 actually made about 30 more hp than the timebomb in the m3, in addition to more torqure
Simple Mercedes V8 brute awesomeness
Unfortunately this glorious engine is suppressed with the stock exhaust set up. I removed the exhaust resonator and it made a huge difference and its much cheaper than other mods like headers or a new exhaust set up. Highly recommend doing this and great video - 05 CLK55 Coupe

❤️ I want it
I wanted a 6.2L but there were too many problems with variable timing. I wanted a M113K until I saw a KZreadr who had found a rubber gasket in the oil pump that went bad in two engines he took apart. Bad gasket means loss of oil pressure. To replace what must be a $2 gasket appears to be an engine out job. Settled on a 4.3L which despite being the smallest, is more than capable.

The reliability of my CLK 55 has been interesting I won’t lie. Rocker cover leaks are common which do affect the idle slightly and of course valve stem seals needing to be replaced! Puffs of smoke coming out the exhaust when under WOT can be terrifying! Aside that, the car seems fine and the 5 speed box is smooth and the engine is quiet when cruising! 23-24mpg can be achieved, even in Cornwall! But for comedy I have seen 3.4mpg when a sports bike met my rear lights.
