Legendary Engines: The Audi - Lamborghini V10 - MYTHBUSTED

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Today we're looking at an iconic supercar engine. The Audi/Lamborghini V10. Existing in two distinct variants, we are focusing on the 5.2L unit, but we also examine the 5L engine and talk about how it has been applied to many saloon and estate cars - and just how similar they are.

Finally someone who truly understands the real deal and brought it to light. I’ve never understood why everyone has always said: “This Audi x has a Gallardo motor.” Audi developed the platform for the V10 that was put into the Gallardo, after all, Audi acquired Lamborghini in 1998 and basically saved them and elevated them to an extremely high level. So the phrase should be more like this: “This Lamborghini has an Audi engine”, which in my opinion is a wonderful thing. It’s shows how two of the greatest car companies worked together to create a wonderful product. P.S. The C6 RS6 is the craziest one of the all, and it’s still my favorite.

The average Audi V10 has done some autobahn, some city drive and some country drive while the average BMW V10 has done hundreds kilometers of burnouts donuts and all the stuff that revs the shit out of the engine, killing it in the process.

S6 C6 and S8 D3 are as you said 5.2 and are different from the Gallardo one but C6 RS6 has a Lamborgini engine which was upgraded by a couple of turbos and is also very reliable.

Lamborghini had been talking about building a V10 engined "smaller" model since around the late 80's or early 90's, long before they ever did. I remember reading a small writeup about it in Car and Driver magazine back then. As to where the actual design came from for the V10 they used in the 1st gen., I don't know. It's undersquare, too.

Well actually the Gallardo facelift got the Audi engine, which is also found in the Audi S8 D3 or the S6 B6. These are indeed the same 5.2L V10s. But again - the Audi engine was put into the Gallardo, not the other way around. So if you have a 5.2L Gallardo, you can say that you car has an Audi engine.

Speaking of linear piston speed, I recall that due to its nature, the 3.2l inline 6 of the E46 M3, at peak revs, has a piston speed comparable to that of an F1 engine at the time... But while the figures for that engine are readily available, this is not so with F1 engines...

Audi asked cosworth to design the V10!! Audi bought cosworth company back in that time. (Except the racing part which they sold to FORD). The block and the cylinder head was produced in the UK, and assembled in Hungary, Győr. And in 2004 Audi SOLD cosworth for MAHLE.

Torque capacity has not a lot to do with stroke length, and all to do with cubic capacity. Torque = swept volume x BMEP / 4π. For the same swept volume and cylinder pressure, the decrease in stroke and moment arm of the crank throw is made up for by the increase in area of the piston and hence the force applied on the piston. The net effect is that the torque value, theoretically, would remain the same. Practically though, bigger bores allow bigger valves and ports, allowing better breathing especially at higher RPMs. The combined effect is then, that all things being equal, an oversquare engine will make more torque, at higher RPM Where an undersquare engine excels is in packaging, better S/V (surface area / volume) ratio of the combustion chamber, less heat loss to the cylinder walls, and better swirl in the combustion chamber on intake and compression. For a road car, an undersquare engine is better for efficiency and emissions.

Instead of Lamborghini obtaining a V10 engine from Audi, it manufactures itself and Audi will do the same, it will not obtain such an engine from Lamborghini, but will produce a V10 engine itself, as Koenigsegg thought of producing an engine himself, and it is also a genius idea to do this instead of obtaining an engine from another manufacturer, for example Ford, and that, only the volume of the engine or the injectors And that exactly the same.

It seems like if a boring company tries to create a crazy car with a special engine, they end up with a V10. Audi, Lexus, Dodge... Well perhaps I wouldn't call Porsche boring, but their V10 was a massive departure from their usual engines, espiecially considering it was planed in the late 90's. Same goes for any other company, the V10 was a massive technological departure from their usual engines.

I'm trying to imagine how these V10 motors will behave in the years to come. They will probably be quite thirsty and require significant maintenance. In the EU, some of the car registration expense is based on engine displacement and that will make for some hair-raising fees as well. I don't know if these engine/car models make for a good second car. Sounds very pricy to have in the garage.

No look at first gen R8s. Some are reaching 100k miles and are still reliable. Audi really spent time to make a Supercar that’ll last.

I have never seen one of your vlogs, but my first impression was that of a farmer reading a lecture about an engine. Now this is no criticism but your clothing is kind of ..., but that was also tha case with Clarkson so perhaps your just doing the right thing here.

If you’re a shmee or streetspeed717 type of person you won’t like him, he doesn’t do “vlogs” for the most part though and if you appreciate a higher production quality and someone with a production film background enjoying unique cars then you’ll love his stuff. His loud shirts are trademarks.

Also just go watch his stuff. I’ve seen very few you tubers put in as much work as this guy has over the years and for almost no payout until just recently when a video finally went somewhat viral. If you enjoy one games you’ll enjoy his stuff.

Doug demuro wears 2 t shirts and cargo shorts and has 3m+ subs. I dont think clothing is relevant when it comes to automotive content.

The fact that "you've never seen one of (his) vlogs" is a good sign of James growing reach within the YT algorithm. He's been around for years and only now finally getting his due. I think i found him when he had 4500 subs and thought "why doesn't this channel have a million subs?". He does it his own way, which I love! Literally the only constructive feedback I could ever levy, is he's a bit busy with hands when both are free of something to hold. Would never stop me from watching tho! :-D
