LEGENDARY Band EXPOSED the HOLLYWOOD ELITE on This 1982 Rock Classic! | Professor of Rock
Ойын-сауық
If you're free tonight, I'd love to invite you to an exclusive party. It's going to be packed with 'A-list' celebrities, and we'll be living it up like rock stars... Doesn't that sound like a blast? Maybe… But for Pete Townsend, a musician who could easily be carved into the Mt. Rushmore of guitar heroes, the glitzy lives of the rich and famous aren't all they're cracked up to be. In fact, for this icon, it's all just a ‘put on. This is a story of The Who, who were teetering on implosion, grappling with the loss of the legendary figure Keith Moon, and Eminence Front, a track that was initially panned but has since risen to become a modern rock classic. So come on… join the party…dressed to KILL… NEXT on Professor of Rock.

On September 7, 1978, Keith Moon “Moon the Loon”, one of the top five drummers of the Rock Era passed away. The surviving members of The Who-Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, and John Entwistle…were devastated. They faced a crucial decision: should they continue without the musician who helped make them one of the biggest rock bands of all time, or was this the end? Led Zeppelin encountered a similar dilemma a year later when John “Bonzo” Bonham died. Plant, Page, and Jones decided that Bonham's death marked the end of Zeppelin, and they officially disbanded.
After months of deliberation, The Who decided to forge ahead without their beloved co-founder. They brought in their longtime friend Kenny Jones to take over as drummer and released Face Dances, their ninth studio album and the first record without Keith Moon, in 1981. Face Dances was a solid album, highlighted by the cuts “You Better You Bet,” and “Another Tricky Day:” Face Dances prospered, reaching #4 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart and #2 on the UK Album Chart, and selling over 2 million units worldwide. While the band prepared to fulfill their contractual obligation to put out a 10th studio album It’s Hard in ’82, they continued to battle internal strife.
The Who were still mourning the loss of Keith Moon, and then there were the issues for Pete, who was their primary songwriter. He was a mess… He had to enter rehab for heavy drug & alcohol abuse. Upon his return, there were personal and creative rifts to heal. "I managed to convince the guys in the band that I would stay alive if they allowed me to work with them again. Townshend spilled the tea some years later: "After the Rainbow fiasco"-a 1981 concert where Townshend drank four bottles of brandy and got into a backstage fight with Roger-"I had difficulty proving to Roger, in particular, that I was going to enjoy working with The Who, and that it was important to me that the band end properly, rather than end because of my mental demise.”

I met Roger Daltry a few years ago. Was coming out of work and I see this man get out of a town car. He walks past me and says good morning. I kind of looked behind me after he passed saying to myself “if I don’t know any better I swear that was Roger . Well to my surprise as I was watching the news that night that it was in fact him. He was there to donate money for a new program for adolescents and teens cancer patients. I love the fact that not only did he make the donation but he came with no security guards or personal assistants following him around my boss who went to the press conference said he was very nice and actually seemed a little embarrassed by all the attention. He apparently has stayed very active in the program. He seems like one of the good ones

20-some years ago I met Jimmy Page on a weekday, as he was coming out of a vegetarian restaurant in Atlanta. He was with a large male companion. When I told him I'd seen one of two very recent Plant/Page shows, he asked which one and after I replied he said "the next night was better."

I got a story like that. Back in the early 80s I was working in the cafe of my small town Rhode Island Woolworth's and going to college at night. The Who was on tour and I desperately wanted to win tickets a radio station was giving away, but no luck. About a month later I was standing behind the counter in the cafe looking out on to the sales floor of the store when this man in a brown trench coat walks by, he sees me looking at him so he stops. And I'm thinking that guy looks exactly like Roger Daltry. Anyway, he walks up to the counter. And I'm just staring at him, and I could kind of tell he was expecting me to say something. So I said, 'can I help you.' So he says, 'I'll have a coke.' And I'm like holy shit, he has a British accent. So I give him the coke and he pulls this huge wad of cash out of his pocket to pay. I don't say anything, I'm just standing there dumbfounded, so he walks away. The next day I go into work and I'm talking to my friend who managed the toy dept. of the store and I say, 'the weirdest thing happened yesterday. I saw this guy who looked exactly like Roger Daltry'. She's like holy shit a girl that worked in her department said the same thing, she said she saw Roger Daltry in the store yesterday. I asked her where The Who was playing then and she said they had been in Montreal, but she thought they were on a tour break. Later I heard a reports that Rod Stewart had been seen at the mall and was followed around by a group of teenage girls and he got into a convertible Cadillac and beeped his horn and drove away. And I was like, that wasn't Rod Stewart, you idiots, it was Roger Daltry. I'll never know whether that was really Roger Daltry, but it certainly was not Rod Stewart - that I know. P.S. I not only think that it really was Roger Daltry (can't be 100% certain) but I also am deeply convinced that I 'manifested' that. I think my deep desire to go to that concert manifested into that incident. Anyway, I've manifested many, many mysterious things since, but that was the first uncanny occurrence that built my belief that desire is a powerful force in the universe.
Fun fact: After Keith Moon died, Phil Collins tried out for the drummer spot. They didn't gel, and he didn't get the spot. Phil Collins then went back to Genesis and went on to become one of the biggest icons of the 80s.

One of the coolest things that I've ever experienced in my life happened because of the song "Eminence Front". I was at a Who concert at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut in 2006 and was in the front row, center stage. The greatest seats I've ever had for any concert. I had made a sign requesting a Who song called "Black Widows Eyes" because The Who had been playing it on the first leg of that tour but dropped it on the second leg. When the lights went down and focused on Pete doing the introduction of the song "Eminence Front", the next thing I know - Roger Daltrey kneeled down on the stage directly in front of my and said, "The setlist is already set mate". I asked if they'd do the song the next night in Boston. He said he'd try. Then the next night in Boston, they played "Black Widows Eyes" and Roger saluted me! Never in my wildest imagination did I think I'd get to talk to Roger Daltrey at center stage in the middle of a Who gig. And never did I think I'd get to affect the setlist of a Who gig in Boston! But it happened. And BTW, half-way through the performance of Eminence Front that night in Connecticut, Pete's guitar cut out and he tossed it like a javelin over his amps and into the stands behind the stage. My avatar photo is a picture of me on the right, a good friend of mine on the left, and Pete Townshend in the center. That was taken outside the TD Garden in Boston the night after Mohengan Sun. I also got to meet Roger that night after the gig. Who Heaven!!!
The Who proved you didn't have to like each other to do great music. Eminence Front is quite a fun song.

This is one of my favorite Who songs because of the lyrics describing how fake and manufactured things are and was a great compliment to Don Henley's Dirty Laundry about the media. They were both kind of a primer for what was to come in the 80's. It kind of helped me develop part of my cynicism and being skeptical of what I see and to not always take what you see on the surface as being right.

I had the privilege of seeing The Who at Badminton with a full orchestra a couple of years ago in what might be their last tour. They were incredible particularly considering their age. Rogers voice was still very strong and Peter’s guitar playing was fabulous as was Zac on drums a serious musician who did not get this gig due to his date, but sheer talent.
This song and You Better You Bet are my favorite

"Another Tricky Day" IMHO the best post-Moon Who song.
As much as I love Pete and his music I always disliked when he said things about Roger, I've even heard him do it on stage. I guess it's tough to not have differences when you become a star and sure Roger did his share of causing the riff. Eminence Front was the very first song my friend played for me on his brand new expensive turn table and speakers, fantastic! He has since passed and this song will always remind me of him. Rest in Peace Curtis your love for music made us great friends, miss you. Great episode professor!!

Thanks for this one. "Eminence Front" is one of my personal favorites. One of my long time friends put me on to this record back in the early 90s and loved it ever since (I even borrowed his "It's Hard" CD just for this track). It has a nice groove and good instrumentation. Plus the message is solid. Great classic track.💯💯💯💯

My first real hours-long ride on a motorcycle was on a Harley Road King in Sturgis (yeah, I trailered it up there as the chase vehicle for three other buddies). Playlist was on shuffle. Fired up the bike, put it in first gear, hit play, and the first song was “Eminence Front”. As we rode out of our campground to the highway on that cool morning, the intro was like an IRL soundtrack. Whatever memory the song had evoked prior to that was permanently superseded by that moment.

Super cool. 😎 Great soundtrack song.
Absolutely one of my favorite songs of all time. Like you, I could not find enough good things to say about it. That it calls out hypocrisy and fake people is the icing on a stone groove. Townsend built so many songs around synth grooves that Aerosmith might have found silly and cheesy (said Steve Tyler in their autobiography) but they are an undeniably clever use of the instrument and Pete wrote brilliant songs around them.
That song is epic. Gotta hear it loud. When those drums kick in with the guitar, it's exhilarating. Perhaps my favorite song of theirs, top 5 for sure.

"I've Known No War" is another great track from the album.
Saw this album tour in Cedar Falls, Ia. By the third song Pete bloodied his nose hitting it on his guitar doing a crouch jump. After the song he came up to the mic with a bloody towl laughing and said ' I got a little to wild on that one'. By the end of the show he had done so many windmills his hand looked like a bloody stump. I've seen hundreds of concerts and never seen anyone give more of themself for a show then Pete Townsend! Legendary
Love the song! I've always been a Who fan. I clipped the the the first 30 seconds of it and made it the ringtone for my phone. you just have to love it. It's smooth, energetic and sophisticated. The thing that surprises me most is almost everyone asks me ... "I've heard that before, what song is that?" After I tell them they know instantly and ask me if I will send it to their phone so they can use it too! 🙂
Eminence Front is one of my favorite Who songs. I drummed along to this in my car seemingly forever. Thanks for an informative, and fun, episode!

Outstanding track, and very characteristic of Pete Townshend’s gifts as a songwriter: fine, intelligent and meaningful lyrics, plus a bubbly keyboard part that lends a propulsion to the song. Starting with Who’s Next and lasting into his solo career, Townsend has always had a canny gift for incorporating synth into his music.
This was one of my favorite songs back in the day! Still my favorite Who song!

"Eminence Front" described '80s excess before we even knew what that decade really was. This song is as relevant today as it was then, maybe even moreso. (Another good one on that theme: "Real Me".) The sound of it is ominous, like society never learns. Like LedZep, it came out after their drummer's death as you said, and on what I think are underrated swansong albums from these bands. Thanks again, Prof. 15:50 "Let My Love Open the Door" has to be the end song for every rom-com, but I still love it. "Face to Face" is also a good one!

I never actually listened to or watched Tommy, I can't speak to his history with SA, nor to the idea that having what he had is somehow helpful in his case. I just heard that what he had was not only well known to be illegal and highly unethical, he had an astoundingly ridiculous, inexcusable amount of it. Is it weird that as much and as long as I’ve been listening to this song, when it comes on the radio I think of it as a Pete Townsend SOLO release? lol Great song, love the intro and Kenny Jones drums are rock solid! Yes Pete wrote it and sang it as you stated, so maybe that’s why I give him credit as this being a solo hit. Those were turbulent times in the history of the WHO!
I always loved that little mistake. It gives it a “live” feel. Sometimes, little mistakes like that make the music more exciting. IMHO, of course.😊 Rock on, Professor!

LOVE this song! My memory as a kid hearing it was first 'seeing' it on MTV on its official video. When I saw them hit play on the reel to reel, I thought that was the actual instrument - a pre-recorded track and not a synth sequence - not realizing it was the overall playback for synching their performance to, as the video is not 'live.' I learned fast for myself when I started doing playback synching on my stuff for TV/Video shoots!
When this song came out I was working night crew in a grocery store and we used to play our radio over the intercom system overhead. The sound sucked but we had music. We were called “The Animals” cuz we were crazed with drugs and alcohol. One of our guys took his own life one night and we were stunned (it should’ve been any one of us cuz we were out of control). This song came out and came over our crappy sound system and I mis heard the lyrics but at the time it made sense to me. I heard Pete singing “Living is F’d” instead of Eminence Front. Still here it to this day and reminds my of a fallen Conrade. RIP Pat V. Thanks for the good times
