Legend of Zelda Majora's mask: Final boss, Sword and shield battle

Ойындар

Just wanted to test myself, and record myself fighting Majora's mask, fighting with the Gilded sword, and Mirror shield, and the only items to be used were bottles. (Which I stacked Blue potions for)
...I hate Majora's wrath. So cheap with that flinging.....
Enjoy.

    I never liked Fierce Diety in this fight. It feels too cheap and easy. It does have story implications though through symbolism much like the rest of Majora's Mask does though, so that's a bit neat, but that's about it for me. All of that said, Majora's Mask was designed to be able to be beaten by all of the forms in at least some manner without needing to switch out or anything like that. In this way, you can kind of choose your own hiddent difficulty or style to handle him. A very well designed final boss in this regard and breath of fresh air that I wish the Zelda series would revisit again.

    I really want to thank you for doing this battle using only sword and shield. As an avid lover of this game I've analyzed the shit out of it for years. And with this, seeing Link use only a sword and shield against a demon like beast equipped with two massive whips able to slash and pull through link, I realized a new message in the game. Link is a child. Majora by the end of this battle is a giant compared to him. A giant of evil. Throughout the game Link has done small good deeds that seem unrelated to the impact of this battle. In this Link becomes an embodiment, or rather a symbol, of weak, innocent, but impactful good. The difference in their size and Link's skill and age really flushes out this idea. I never realized how important Link's age was in highlighting themes in the story until now. All said, its fucking badass to see a young guide wield a sword and shield two thirds his size and single handedly bane evil.

  • @SairekCeareste

    @SairekCeareste

    You're welcome, although I think I still did rather bad consisting the battle. This isn't the only video of this I've done. On a more related note, everything you just mentioned is why I love the game so much, and why I've liked it enough to even start my own fanfiction of it. Although I only really write it on my own time. My fanfiction pretty much puts all of that into fruition. The whole near impossibility and the incredible danger Link puts himself in to try and save Termina, when in reality he honestly doesn't have to. The Woodfall really highlights it for me; both in game play and in a realism aspect; where a simple mistake in footing or getting hit has an effect on both the gameplay and on a realism side of things: Falling off those wooden platforms leads to certain death except in extreme rare cases. And even if you do make it out of that water alive, Link's usually going to be at less than 1 heart, panting from nearly being killed as you struggle to swim him back to the closest piece of land you can scramble desperately up on. In a story aspect though, it isn't just giants Link is fighting, but enemies that have been considered powerful enough to be considered deities. The Deku Scrubs were going to sacrifice the Monkey in the swamp to Odolwa, for example. Of course, the fact that Majora can summon up a whole freaking moon makes it godly enough as it is. I'd love to see Ganondorf do that. And the whole three days thing is just a game to the mask. A game to play with the people's hearts as doom just slowly descends down upon them. People criticize Majora's Mask for it's lack of story, but it does more story telling than any other Zelda game out there. There's even a paper airplane stuck on a pillar in Ikana castle. The simple polygon'd airplane tells A LOT about the potential history of Ikana castle before the kingdom's downfall, it's such a small detail that so many people missed or may not have even cared about, yet when you stop to think about it, it can tell so much. The Stalchildren in the Ikana graveyard too shows that Ikana was desperate enough, that they were using child soldiers to try and hold up in the war. So much detail that's not even relevant in the main story is the beauty of the game that a lot of people just outright miss.

    Cory Clark Oh lord, with the Deku Mask. But it wasn't as frustrating for me as trying it with the Goron Mask only. At least with the Deku mask you can kind of shoot the other masks down, especially if they get close. Can't do much but just slowly punch with the Goron, and you can only really stun Majora by rolling into him at the right moments. It's nothing but frustration. Even infinite magic and blue potions couldn't save me with that one. At least with the other masks, you have an attack that you can use as a reaction with some ranged utility. Goron form is just... fat.

    Fleece Manjenkins Yes. There's a specific spot on the the weird pattern that Majora's Mask starts in, the lower bottom left of that pattern is notorious for pushing you through the wall, especially if you get flung on to it in just the right way (You just need to land on it, more or less). Though, Nintendo was smart. They put a fail-safe in the map. If you fall outside of the arena past a certain point, you will be teleported immediately back into the middle. Though, that usually means right in front of Majora since he generally hangs in the middle of the arena in his final form. You usually get kicked in the face before you can even react.

    Super Mooshroom *Technically* speaking, Majora is gender-less. The game and even the Manga refers to Majora as _'it'_, though in the game's view, that could be seen as just referring to Majora as a mask. In the manga however, Majora is sometimes referred to as a deity, even in background story to show how Majora was turned into a mask, and still seen as an 'it'. Even the "games" it plays with Link are rather gender-less. With "Hide & Seek" and "Tag", and then playing with the people of Termina as if they were merely dolls.

I feel ashamed for having to use a blue potion in this fight though. Then again, I maybe didn't need to if not for that ridiculous throw combo at around 7:20. If people want another fight though even though it'd be 6+ years later, I still will. It'll even have the proper aspect ratio (hopefully) this time!

  • @GrahamChapman

    @GrahamChapman

    Sairek Ceareste I agree... Me, I'm one of those weird people who prefer the boss fights themselves to be epic rather than doing well when I fight the bosses. Meaning I never cheap my way to victory and often put restrictions on myself before I go into a boss fight (e.g., I might decide that I'll fight a boss while being massively underleveled, or poorly equipped, or not to use any healing items, or to end the fight with a certain super awesome but very impractical attack, or to let the boss hit _me_ with one of _their_ super awesome but very damaging attacks, just so it feels like me and the boss both went all-out... during one Kingdom Hearts run, I decided that I wouldn't let my Disney companions get Knocked Out even a single time, which was not only challenging but also made the message of friendship feel a lot more genuine). Majora's Wrath does _not_ play fair. xD But that ridiculous throw combo also made the fight that much more enjoyable to watch. Made the fight feel less one-sided and stuff. ^^ Heh... Well, I suppose that's up to you. Would you do it on the 3DS version next time?

  • @SairekCeareste

    @SairekCeareste

    7 жыл бұрын

    GrahamChapman I have the 3DS version, but no way to capture my 3DS screen. I suppose with a 3DS emulator out now, it may be possible, albeit at the moment it's a bit unstable. I plan to hack my 3DS so I can emulate Majora's Mask on my PC (because my 3DS is really old and beginning to fall apart as it is, it can't even play regular DS games anymore). So if I can get that done, and assuming it all runs okay, then maybe. I'm glad they didn't change Majora in the 3DS version though like they did for all of the other bosses. The fight itself was fine, although the flinching mechanic itself was broken in the N64 version with being able to permanently hit stun Majora and pretty much all the other bosses.

  • @GrahamChapman

    @GrahamChapman

    7 жыл бұрын

    Sairek Ceareste Recording could pose a problem, true. An emulator is probably your best bet, provided you can find an emulator that both has okay image quality and is somewhat compatible with a recording software. M'yeah. Not that I particularily minded the updates they gave the other boss fights, (though they could've at least _tried_ to make them a bit harder,) but yeah, the fight against Majora was already good and iconic enough as it was... Also, yeah, the hitstun might've been a bit ridiculous.

    I'm not sure if he's meant to try and fake you out by doing that, but usually when he falls near you, you can just poke him with the sword. Occasionally though if you get near him when he's like that, he will suddenly get up and counter attack with his projectile spam which is the only actual offensive ability he has. Despite what Tatl suggests by saying you should use the sword, getting near him is actually fairly dangerous as Link. The projectiles can't really be blocked at close range; they splash through the shield. They can even splash through it while you're distanced too. It's best to just avoid contact with them entirely by side hopping if possible. Using the Deku form actually works well here. The Deku's shell can actually blocks the projectiles completely and he always runs over the flower patterns (which you can burrow into) on the edge of the arena. The spin if he runs by you generally connects all the time too if you're up on the surface. It's also entirely possible to just hit him easily with the bow, so long as he is running straight away/towards you, the shots will generally connect but at times his AI will just have him abruptly run to the side, bow or no bow.

    I like the camera angles that result from locking onto Majora's Incarnation with Z-targeting. It's only a side-effect of locking onto something that runs laps around the room in seconds flat, but it really adds to the "off-ness" of the whole thing.

  • @SairekCeareste

    Only major problem with it is that lock-on range is too short that it's easy to lose him, and then you have to get very up close to try and lock on to him again, which at times can be very needlessly difficult to do. Ironically, it can be too difficult to lock onto the correct target you want, or to cancel targeting when the masks are flying about.

    I’ve once spoken about how Majora doesn’t disturb me anymore, I immediately take that back after remembering THIS is a thing and I can never grasp Majora’s true nature. Regardless of what origin the mask is born in, it will always remain a hexing mask with terrifying potential, power, and origin. Whether it be made from the armour of a beast who is revered as a monster to people, or a ritualistic mask of unimaginable evil, it will always remain terrifying.

    @Frostfire40 The highest amount of flings I got him to do in a row was literally 9 flings; the only reason he stopped I think was because the 9th fling literally had me thrown through the wall and out of bounds; which the boss battle has a fail-safe for the player to teleport to the middle of the arena if that happens.

I just had to hang back most of the time to find their patterns, I was at a disadvantage and I knew it. The only way to win the fight was to be cowardly, only attacking when I was absolutely sure I could pull it off.

    This battle was soooooo annoying, took me forever to understand how to kill Majora... 1st: in her first form you need to use Deku mask and dive into the flowers and fly when she's above you. You only need to do this 3 times untill the masks join the battle. 2nd: Kill the masks around with light arrows always defending from majoras laser. When the masks are gone, target majoras with her own laser using your shield till she turns herself into Michel Jackson's incarnation (I'm joking, but the moonwalking is awesome :D) 3: During the majoras incarnation, you just need to target her and throw arrows while she's dancing (watch out when she start to throw the bubbles). Whenever you hit an arrow, run to her and attack with your sword. Need to do this a few times till she turn into Majora's Wrath 4: When she turn into Majora's wrath put your Zora's mask (which will make your battle waaaaaay easier) and protect yourself with the eletric barrier (hope you had the romani chateau for unlimited magic) and get close enough for attacking her. Seriously, this is the best and easier way for killing her, once you have unlimited magic and you can do some harm with the eletric barrier, avoiding her annoying attacks... Hope I could help you, it took me a morning, but I finished the bitch :D

    This is definitely the way the fight should have been, more Dark Soulsy. The only change I would make to this game is that the fight should be impossible without the Fierce Deity mask, and using it means you can't use any magic items, and even _with_ the mask you're only as powerful to Majora as Link is regularly like in this video, you should be forced into this kind of sword fighting and forced to look for openings and things. And imagine the implications of that: Majora is so powerful it has to make you more powerful just so you'll be more entertaining to thrash.

  • @SairekCeareste

    @SairekCeareste

    ***** I agree as far as story goes, that being forced into the Fierce Diety mask would have made for a more climatic plot. Especially since this is what happens in the Manga. When Majora tells Link after Link had saved Skull Kid from being killed by him, to "play a game" with it. He decides tag, and tells Link that he's "it", and gives him the Fierce Diety mask. In Japan, the person who's "it" is the "Oni", meaning demon, which of course that is what the Fierce Diety mask turns Link in to. The thing about the game though, is that Majora is meant to be challenged in any way you want. There's supposed to be a variety of ways to defeat him -- some more challenging then others. Those flower patterns on the floor are for the Deku Scrub, for example. So if you're really crazy, you can defeat him using only the Deku transformation. There's also the thing that the game never actually forces you to pick up heart pieces or heart containers. So you can go throughout the entire game with only 3 hearts. The game was explicitly designed to allow veteran players to choose the difficulty of the game by choice. So the game sacrifices a little bit of game-play and plot, for a lot of replay-ability. It's hard to fault it because of that, because it does work. And gameplay wise, suddenly being thrust into a new transformation you have no idea of its abilities, would be a bit of a nasty move. The game always teaches you and gives you information on how to use a transformation. While Fierce Diety acts the same as Link mechanically, on a technical standpoint he is quite different.

    Sairek Ceareste There's a bunch of ways around that from a design point of view - you can't heal in the Fierce Deity mask, so _when_ you need to heal, not if, you could have the four masks spawn at the Majora's Wrath part on four different hard to reach places, only accessible and defeatable by certain masks or combos of masks, all the while avoiding Majora's long range whip attacks. Or you could have it so you can only harm Majora at all even with the Fierce Deity mask after attacking and defeating one of the other masks, which in turn can't be damaged by Fierce Deity, forcing you to mix and match mask combos and items and the like. That would also make the arena a bit more fun, huge spiralling staircases and platforms and things.

    What? The fight would still be over in a couple of minutes. Just don't bother using FD. Besides, its a Zelda boss. There have only been a small amount of bosses that were challenging or difficult. And most of those were designed by Capcom. i.e. Gleeok, Original Ganon, Rebonack, Thunderbird, Vaati, Sham-rok, Genie, Oracles Manhandla, the flying Stingrays. Most Zelda bosses are sadly, cake. :(

Basically what the speedrunners use. The time period isn't gracious but it's more than doable.

    what I find fascinating is the difference of emotional tones from majora and ganon. ganon was in agony and filled with hatred. he was in unimaginable distress and excruciating pain throughout that brutal battle in OoT. the music portrayed the sense of broken agony and anguish of both link and ganon(dorf). ganon was evil but he had a good reason. and his mind and body were crying out in anguish because he could not control his agony and anguish thus turning him Into ganon. but majora is different. were ganon was suffering in emotional (and physical) agony, majora has no emotions. the moodhere is a sense of nihilistic insanity and pure evil. the pain is gone, only to be replaced with fear!!!

    According to the backstory, Majora used to be a playful god who fell, because it apparently consumed greedy humans who were trying to kill it to grant their wishes (this is where the whole "wish" backstory of the mask came from). But in doing so, after consuming so much greed, it became greedy itself, and began to consume everything, until the original world it came from had nothing left. Until some adventure came around and sealed the embodiment of Majora into the mask and it was locked away until the Happy Mask Salesman came around. The whole greed and playful aspect of Majora is evident with the fact the moon wants to "Consume everything" and even in the boss fight, the Mask is just floating or running around (quite literally), toying with you, and taunting you until the final phase. And even then, the final phase has those top... things. Which in a way can even resemble a playful toy. Majora will also still take moments to even taunt Link, waiting for him to get close, or dodge when you try to shoot an arrow at it when it's doing so.

Between the poison swamp, where everything is dying, the harsh blizzard in the mountains where nothing can live, the ocean where nothing can be born, and the canyon where the undead cannot rest. Then of course there's the moon, showing the unstoppable impending doom wherever you go looming up above. To be honest, sheathing the sword is a bad idea that I learned later on, even if it allows you to roll later on. Although I supposed the main reason I did it is because I was playing on a keyboard, and it quite honestly sucks terribly with the keyboard buffer. I actually backflip his attacks now; since it aims the shield above you (if you're not too early on it's timing) so his attacks don't hit "directly" on top and clip "through" the shield. His grabbing and flinging is still cheap, though.
