Beria? i see the similarities but Beria was a horrible man both personally and politically I see lang as just another incarnation of the state political police himself a decent guy who does horrible things

​@@shadymerchant1198 I mean Lang literally just decides that he is going to help eliminate Reuenthal because he insulted him. It doesn't get more personal than that. Maybe one could argue that he was a decent guy if he wasn't so vindictive. It is hard to pick the biggest bastard of the LOGH but Lang seams to be it the top league right there with Trunicht, De Vile, Falk and perhaps some other that I left out. In fact Falk seams to be his FPA analogy. They both participated in killing of innocent people for personal reasons so in my opinion they are both equally bad people.

One of the best pieces of fiction ever. Watching it feels more like watching history itself unfold.

It should be grade school educational core material. That aside and its thematic brilliance in depiction of humanity and all its glamour and imperfection, the classical ost is remarkable. The classical music choreography is nearly the most incredible aspect of this masterpiece in that it humanizes the characters by utilizing some of, if not the most exquisite beautiful compositions of all time, particularly the choreography and use of the Dvorak Symphonies; it's utterly breathtaking. Just my 2 cents.

This video was impressive, and thank you for taking the time to make it. Yoshiki Tanaka really knew his history.

I'm sure you just have it in the script to contrast against Yang Wen-li, but still, calling Reinhard a "noble-born brat" is hardly accurate at all. Sure, he was born a noble, but only by name, his family being all but destitute forcing his drunkard father to sell his daughter to the emperor. And he was surely not a brat. Prideful and arrogant, obviously, but not because he was spoiled and had an easy upbringing, but because he had an unmatched ambition and skill. Great video, always love seeing people making stuff about LOGH, though it's hardly a forgotten or even underappreciated series, it sure deserves more discussion in modern reviews.

Even nobles without wealth and power are still far more privileged that the common peasant they have rights and advantages Reinhard got to go to the imperial officer academy something that was not available to the common worker even Mittermeyer was born to non noble but relatively well off family Reinhard's father wasn't destitute at least by empire standards he owned a nice home in a good neighborhood no palatial estate but pretty good he was forced to sell his daughter because the emperor wanted her he had no choice in the matter he thought he might as well take the money Reinhard was a brat you don't have to have an easy up bringing to be a brat which is defined as " A child, Particularly a badly behaved one." Reinhard was a willful and impulsive person who refused to obey he was justified often enough but a brat he still was LOGH is doing well though while not as popular as the mass media like AoT or similar shows its enjoying really good sales and views but it can always be talked about more

I watched almost all video essays on r/videoessay and even if this video was posted today, this is one of the best video essays inspired by anime.

One of the all time greats! Definitely worth seeking out.

Damn, good video. Legend of Galactic Heroes is under-rated and handles politics better than some contemporary art. I will say that it still manages to be fun and interesting, especially if one has an eye for history.

Isn't Yang a reference to Chen Qingzhi 陳慶之? A char from Tanaka's other historical novel who also win battles against impossible odds.

I assumed he was based on Admiral Yi Sun-Sin. The man who never lost a battle and constantly had a corrupt government getting in his way, constantly.

@@tcc5750 Admiral Yi doesn't have the playfulness though, and Yi had earlier campaigns against Jurchens so Chen's late blooming career fits better. Perhaps he's closer to Tanaka's originally draft where Yang's prototype was a more serious, seasoned veteran.

Wanted to say - history doesn't repeat, we simply think it does because we continuously examine history with modern perspective.

Whaaaat, reinhard is not a "noble born brat", he was a commoner. He only has any affiliation with the goldenbaum dynasty because the emperor took "a liking" to his sister. In fact that is a major plot point early on, the fact that he is not of noble birth. What are you doing man????

Another comment already addresses this, but Reinhard was born to an aristocratic family. Poor by noble standards, but a noble family all the same.

He was of noble birth. Nobles could fall on hard times and it was stated multiple times for a reason. "Some nobles moved in next door" was in the first flashback.

@@lithobolos Reinhard was born an Imperial Knight, a class in nobility with no inherent wealth and authority. In another words, Reinhard was just a commoner with "von" in his name when he was born. Also Reinhard's name when he was born was Reinhard von Musel, not Reinhard von Lohengramm. Musel is said Imperial Knight family, where Lohengramm is a nobility family name whose clan was pretty much dead by the time Reinhard received the name
