Not simply just a fan, you will absolutely obsess on the philosophical, social and strategic beats, idolization and romanticism clash against the cruel reality of war. No other anime has this much timeless relevance to the history of humanity! Plus it's fun trying to remember all the character names and it's has that beautiful 80's style as well.

It's a great show. Watched it with my girlfriend last year and we loved it. We sat through an episode or two every day during the week and to these day we sometimes "miss" some of the characters. My only real complain is that the battles feel more like being in sea than in space, but it's something you can ignore easily. Also, the prequel series with stories from their youth aren't that great. On regards to this movie, it has some beatiful backgrounds and nice animation from the time, really. They don't make 'em like that anymore.

I watched a film of LOGH, forgot which one, and they presented a perfectly 2D battle strategy in the ultimate 3D environment of space. You can have any silly shape or form of bad science to your fiction, but just straight out ignoring geometry, the foundation for a lot of not just science but simply logical thinking in general, well how do you expect me to watch that? This music and this ballet in space, it isn't exactly dissimilar from the basic idea in the space station scenes in Odyssey in Space, so I am tempted, maybe I just need a different entry point. And you didn't talk about an aspect that puzzles me - most OVA I know are under 10 eps, heck what even goes for 20? And this one is over a hundred!? Just what were the logistics of that, how did this still work in a market where your average OVA has 3 parts to it?

I think the new one is fine, I quite like it and yeah it's different but remaking the exact same show with shinier graphics seems like a wasted opportunity imo, the people who love the original don't care about the graphics or the old animation they will watch it regardless, so I enjoy the new one for what is new about it while seeing all these amazing moments being adapted for a new generation. If you're watching it for the first time and you're up for the old show, definitely watch that first you definitely won't regret it. I watched the original many years ago so I don't mind, the original will always be there, I feel the new one will make the show approachable for a lot of new people, the old one got ignored for being perceived as "boring", lots of people if they even knew of it refer to it as "boring germans in space" which while ignorant I can see why they would call it that. So anything they can do to bring this story more popularity is fine by me. @@Stevem You think the CGI is ugly? Are you some kind of purist? The CGI in the new one is beautiful. I watched the original first and I still find the new one an amazing anime in its own right. It isn't just "bringing more popularity", they actually do it properly too. At the current rate the new anime only reached Kircheis' death two episodes faster. Over the course of the entire series, that would merely be less than 10 episodes. I know for a fact that you can take out that much by removing some of the more extraneous stuff that has zero bearing on the story. There was much of the old anime that didn't do anything to advance the story or add to the atmosphere. Honestly I hate it when people have this absurd notion that "CGI is bad, m'kay". CGI badly executed is bad, just as traditional artwork/animation executed badly is bad. The original is INFAMOUS for having really, REALLY badly drawn portions of it.

As he said "but the way they use it,"' I dislike it as well - the awful 3D camera zooms and swoops, the out of place particle effects, odd lighting. They don't blend well with the 2D at all. Compare with Battlestar Galactica that has similar space shots - they blend way better with the live-action camerawork which is always moving. Oh, and I play a fair amount of games that do 3D CGI better. Most of what is drawn poorly in the original generally maintains good form and framing.

I like to compare Logh with GoT, both have very grand sociological themes. Now the reason GoT is more popular is that it balances out the sociological with psychological themes and character development. Logh also has character development, but unlike GoT, the characters are never more important than society. Which means whatever happened in GoT season 8, all of that is completely absent in Logh. Never will the philosophical and sociological developments be overshadowed by a character's feeling. There won't be a Jaime Lanister where a character's incestous love overshadows his beliefs about caring about the people. A fan favorite character getting a shine won't overshadow who beats the metaphorical villain. A sexy romance between nephew and aunt won't take priority over the wellbeing of the kingdom. Not of that nonsense. It's completely devoted to its themes and stories, with none of that Hollywood flair. It's definitely like Dune, and more so the Foundation series by Asimov. Both can feel a bit dry at times though, which is my only issue. Otherwise top to bottom an unrivaled political epic.

I don't think you know what "infamous" means, the original OVA is not "infamous", it's "famous"

Honestly, not a great intro, a friend was just saying he'd managed to turn off a bunch of people by dropping them into this instead of the first episodes or their movie remake.
