@@hungrygoriya I'm shocked, my family played it for hundreds of hours, mapping out every single tile, and we never even noticed the theme music changes based on the area and linked it to the different family members.

You took a game that confuses many and broke it down very nicely to make it far less intimidating. You know how I feel about this game, so this makes me so happy.. to present it in such a way to make people feel it is way more approachable than they might have previously thought is going to allow many more to give this wonderful game a shot and love it like we, (and so many others) do. So this one evaded me when I was a kid, but I could imagine I would've loved it back then! That being said, I just started playing it on Namco Classics Volume 2 and I'm totally hooked! It's super interesting & the music is great as well!

I thought I was the only person who ever had this game! Also I never had the booklet. I loved playing but was always lost. I don't think the purpose of the game ever made sense, I just loved it. You've inspired a real playthrough. Thank you so much!!!

I loved this game when I was a kid. I've never met another person that had it

A very long time ago, back in fourth grade, my best friend and I were playing through this game. We talked about it one morning on the bus. Our bus driver had just finished Wizardry, and was looking for a game to play. He overheard us and started asking about it. The next morning he told us he was super tired, because he stayed up really late playing it all night. All told, it took the three of us working together and sharing tidbits of info around there months to beat this game. Lots of nostalgia here for me, on this one. This was WELL before the internet, and for another twenty years I'd never heard of anyone else who had played this one. In sixth grade, we went to middle school. Never saw that guy again, but for the rest of fourth grade and all of fifth we all kinda shared all kinds of stuff. We taught him about Metallica and Nivrana, he played all his Queen tapes, and we pooled our resources to beat master blaster and Battle of Olympus. I still wonder what happened to that guy. He'd have to be about 60 now. Could still be driving that bus. Well, he's probably got a new bus. = ) One of my life regrets is not finding out his last name, believe it or not. Would be nice to see what else he got up to.

Even if every bus driver at the school was named John, there'd still only be like six people it could've been. = D Awesome stream tonight, BTW, and I like Redaux a lot too, so that's one more thing I have to thank you for introducing me too. = D

It was really fleshed out despite some troubles around softlocking like I mentioned, but in a game where experimentation is at the forefront, it's hard not to end up there.

I played this game so much as a kid that the soundtrack imbues a nostalgic feeling cant explain...this was the very first game i beat...me and my dad would take turns and while he was at work i couldnt wait to show him what i had figured out ir how far i had got...a true masterpiece that doesnt get the credit or accolades it should

Oh yeah. Some games need a manual more than others. Like, you can figure out what's happening in Megaman or Ducktales, and you can suss out what's happening in Zelda, Dragon Quest and the SNES Final Fantasy or SaGa games. The exploration might be part of the fun, even. But this is a port of Dragon Slayer 4 for the MSX; the fourth iteration of a PC JRPG, there isn't going to be much ramp up time. Worse, you might be playing on an emulator and just jumping straight in with no context except what's on the screen. It's not as bad as a KOEI or Ultima game. TL;DR: Oh shoot! I really need to find some scans of the manual!

I love your reviews. You really bring back the 90's kid in me when you make them. I am brought back to the days where I would turn on the TV on a Sunday and watch Video Power. It was a video game show about games, reviews, and competition. Please keep up the good work.

Awww I'm glad it sends you back to a fun time in your life. I'm so late to playing all these games myself, but I can just imagine how fun it was playing through some of them as a kid. I think we had a similar show here called Video and Arcade Top 10, but it was kinda weird... I've heard other shows like that were a lot better!

This was one of my favorite games on NES! Love this one! And Faxanadu is one of my other favorites! As a kid I never knew that they were actually related under the Japanese “Dragon Slayer” series.

Yessss! Faxanadu's been my favourite NES game for most of my life, so I'm with ya! I'm glad I finally got to experience Legacy of the Wizard as well... there was something heartening knowing they were related to one another while I was playing through.

This is the best review of this game. I had it as a kid and loved it despite being flummoxed at its puzzles. But years later with the magic of emulation, I finally beat the game. When I think of composer Yuzo Koshiro, the first game I think of is this one, although I do understand why most people consider Streets of Rage 2 to be his masterpiece. This game has a unique charm and the excellent (albeit underrated by most) music plays a big role in that. The gameplay is fun and original, and the graphics are fantastic. This was also released on the MSX2 as "Dragon Slayer IV: The Drasle Family", and yes, Faxanadu is related to it since it is basically an enhanced version of "Dragon Slayer II: Xanadu". Faxanadu is similarly good in that it's also a Metroid-like with superb music.

I'm sad that I'm coming to this one so late, especially given how deep my love is for Faxanadu. Better late than never though! And the music in this game is really something else. I don't think my foot ever stopped tapping the entire time I played. There were more tracks I could've featured here but just didn't have room for!

holy cow that zoom back of the Map. god Damnnnnnn ha Thats great that the manual actually helps you. There are tons of places to look and find secrets. Not sure if I have the patients now to give this a full play-through. Great review

This game is so underappreciated. It's super hard and admittedly not for everyone, but so absolutely rewarding when you find a crown after searching for hours. I consider myself a pretty decent nes player having completed difficult games like ninja gaiden, castlevania, final fantasy and dragon warrior just to name a few, but I never could beat this game without a code. It wasn't for lack of trying though. No telling how many hours I spent crawling through those dungeons. One thing I can say is the music in this game is criminally underrated. This made me want to play this again. I may pick up another copy of it and try again to complete it without any help

I think you totally nailed it... it's not for everyone, but it's definitely doable with some persistence and process of elimination. The hardest thing for me was getting started, and once I found the glove, I was off! I hope if you give it a go that you have a good time with it.

Great review! I always liked the music and spritework in this game. I actually laughed when you talked about not wanting the attack the cat-girls, as I felt the same way as a kid :-)

I'm glad someone else understands! They were too sweet, especially with Pochi when they swarmed around him while he walked. At one point I had a pile of cat ladies following me and I loved every second!

Thanks for that bit of nostalgia. Legacy of the Wizard was one of our first games. We really didn't know what we were doing (as per your comment toward the end), but we had so much fun! My favorite was the daughter once we picked up the spike shoes. It made it feel a bit more like Super Mario (which we were all familiar with), and it was also so much cheaper to kill the enemies with (as far as magic consumption goes; i.e., it was free). We didn't finish it, but we did find a lot of cool stuff while we played, and we would take turns, switching out characters, roaming around, and just poking into stuff. I don't remember being frustrated by it, which we probably should have been, considering our huge lack of progress. At the end of the video, when you just have some of the music from the game playing, I was brought back. I just listened and I could hear each note in my memory before it was played. The last time I touched the game was over 30 years ago. I must have played it a lot to have the music still burned into my brain like that (especially after brain damage). Thanks again.

I think I would've adored playing this one as a kid. Thanks for sharing some of your memories playing with your family back then. The music in games from my childhood seems to resonate straight to my soul. Stuff like Faxanadu, Super Mario Bros. 2, The Legend of Zelda, King's Quest V etc. take me back to much simpler times in my mind. It's a powerful thing!

This was one of my favorite NES games. My father and I drew a graph paper map for this game along with one for Guardian Legend.

Great review and spot on!! I played this as a child with no clue what to do then as a teen with an understanding of the game. I too got hard locked in Xemn’s area by pushing a block over a ladder. Yes the music is awesome and this game was just such an adventure! I’m glad I got the opportunity to play it back in the day pre-internet. I saw a while back someone was doing a “pixel upgrade” that looked really good, no idea what happened with that. Anyways keep up the good work! Cheers!!

I think I can picture the area where you might've gotten stuck with Xemn. Was it beside the "teeth" room where you have to push blocks horizontally? I know a few people who got stuck there. Great review of largely forgotten gem! I was on a field trip in high school in the early 90s and found this game at a store for $9.99 brand new. All of my classmates made fun of me for spending my money on it, but it was a steal at the time. It was frustrating to play with nothing but the manual and Nintendo Power but I eventually finished it. That final one on one battle with Keela is one of the best final boss battles on the NES. It is frustrating at times, but so much fun to play. :)

She is super cute and was my favourite person to play with by far. Her giant jump made things so much easier.

This game got tucked away in my brain to occasionally flash through the cortex without context. I was so pleased when 20 some odd years after playing it to come across it in its glory and feel at ease to piece my memories back together. After watching your video I think the reason my child mind remembered this adventure was due to the vain pursuit to make sense out of it. Perhaps I recall enjoying it, but not getting it. I’ve been enjoying your videos, they are soothing, calm presentation and a welcome trip to simpler times in gaming and in my own life.

I got this game for a Christmas present when I was in the fourth grade in 1989. Excellent sound track, but beyond cryptic. Me and my brother would take turns trying to figure out where to go, what to do, and which character could go into which part of the dungeon labyrinth. Slowly over the course of about 6 - 8 months we made progress little by little until one day we got the portrait of the dragon to come to life and start the final battle. When we defeated the dragon, it felt like we conquered an army. Good game for its time on the NES, but if you try to play it now without a guide, it won't be long until the blemishes in the design really become noticeable.

I'm glad you two finally got through it! What a team! I played it without a guide or even looking at a map really, and I got so used to taking the same paths around the dungeon that I got used to it pretty quick. It's very overwhelming at the start though.

Oh definitely a NES hidden gem in the RPG category. It's super maze like because of the NES limitations, the characters works like a metroidvania of sorts because of their special powers unlocking a specific part of the dungeon, but it works as a RPG nonetheless.

I loved this game as a kid. It’s not that bad once you get the hang of it. The thing that drove me nuts was finding the shield. I mapped the entire dungeon, realized every segment had an inn, a shop, and a treasure, and noticed one segment seemed to be missing a shop. Then I touched the inn sign. Good times. I found out a long time later that this a rather faithful port of an MSX2 game that’s an update of an MSX1 game. Dragon Slayer IV: Drasle Family, for those who are interested.

One of my childhood favorites! I remember that whenever my family took me on vacation and I have to choose a limited selection of my games to bring with me, this was one of my constant companions (along with its instruction manual, since I kept passwords in it). I only ever got the crowns for Xemn and Meyna as a kid, but I remember one time, the game glitched out and stuck me in the final battle with the dragon as a really glitchy Roas (I'm pretty sure I chose someone else) without even acquiring a single crown. Fun times. :) Those passwords, though... probably the hardest part of the game. :) Thanks for covering this classic game!

Those sound like amazing memories with this game. I love the idea of bringing your NES with you on vacation. That's so cool! Amazing that you (hopefully) got the opportunity to slay the dragon! It's pretty hilarious how buggy some of these old games were, but I'm happy it makes for a fun memory for you. And the passwords... ahhhh! These and the ones for Rambo and Faxanadu are probably the worst ones I've encountered so far. Thank goodness for digital cameras!

Rented this game once when I was 5 or 6, and the rental's manual had some written passwords, one of which was a cheat code for all items/equipment etc... I had such a blast playing around with all the gear in the game that I asked for it for my next birthday... what little brain didn't plan on was that my new copy would not be coming with such information. Thus I became one of those kids you mentioned, who played this game a ton and never figured out anything other than the general abilities for each character. I definitely never realized they all had their own "areas", though I did unintentionally find the daughter's area since she was the only one who could jump high enough to reach it and it was easy to find. I ended up just popping the game in every once in a while to pick the "easy mode" pet and randomly roam around listening to the music! I remember looking through the manual when I first got it, and enjoying the pictures (side note: thanks for including some images from it, that was some instant long lost nostalgia!) but I would have never had the patience to actually read it at that age. By the time I wanted to give this game a more serious shot a few years later, that manual was long since lost to the ether.

It sounds like you have a deep and long history with this game... those glorious times with the code of everything must've been so much fun. I'm sure you could probably find a code online somewhere if you dug around hard enough. If you ever want to look through the manual too, there are scans that people have uploaded that are fairly easy to find. I hope you'll be able to give it a try again sometime. It's definitely worth finishing if you can!

I'd always wondered what was the fastest you could end up getting Super Sonic in Sonic 2, and I was happy to have stumbled upon your video on exactly that. I hope that KZread, in its infinite wisdom (/s), feels fit to put some of your videos in people's recommendations at some point. As is, you're extremely underrated and I'm glad I came across your channel!

I was going to suggest this on your "difficult nes games" video but had to check first that you hadn't already got here. And you were! I really enjoyed your calling out of so many points in this games favor. I'd also add: it's one of the few nes games with an emotionally satisfying ending. Up there with Crystalis.

It's honestly a favourite of mine now, and goodness was it ever tricky to get through! I wish more people would give this one a try because it's worth it! I did love the ending. The whole backstory about a family uniting to help save the world is pretty fantastic!

I love that game, rented it probably a dozen times as a kid but didn't finish it until I was grown. Yuzo Koshiro is one of my idols and he's a prodigy.

@@chrisvanderhoef9885 Something I've played recently is Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap for the Master System, or it was re-released on modern consoles. It's not quite the same, but you use different characters to get around a huge world and there aren't quite as many secrets to find. It's an excellent time though!

Legacy of the Wizard is one of my favorite all time games. Probably the game I have played through the most. I played through it with many of my friends and just myself. This need one of those modern upgrades.

Have you seen the emulator called 3DSen? It's not necessarily the upgrade you're looking for, but it lets you play some NES games in three dimensions and LotW is one that's compatible with it! I haven't tried it myself but I've seen some gameplay using it, and it's something else.

I never spent much time with this one in my early NES days, but after watching your review, I think I missed out. It looks like a bunch of fun. The map is nuts. Really cool how you were able to zoom out on the entire thing.

This is one of the first games I fell in love with as a kid. Heading into the labyrinth really felt like it has high stakes, as there was no way to be sure if you'd make it back. Playing it again as an adult, it was much easier to see the underlying structure of what the developers wanted the player to do and accomplish it. Excellent review! Falcom were really killing it on the NES weren't they? Just take a look at the Ys 2 port - I think it's one of the most gorgeous NES games

It's such a great adventure. I agree that it makes more sense with an adult brain, but I would've loved to see what this game was like when as a kid too. That aimless wandering and wondering would've been cool to experience. I haven't tried Ys II on NES but I have a reproduction cartridge. I should give it a try. I really liked Ys 1.

I loved this game when I was a kid. I use to watch my dad breeze through Mario, Zelda, Punch Out, Final Fantasy and all those great games. But he never completed this game. In fact it frustrated him to the point he would get angry at it. That alone intrigued me to explore this game.

As a kid from a small town. I’ve always wanted to play this game. Small towns don’t get much variety of video games. The only taste I get is from magazines. Non of my rental place have this game and many others titles to. It looks like a game I would love it.

It's a fantastic game. I'd say that if you can find a way to play it these days, it's still very much worth the effort to play.

Had this game as a kid when it came out (I'm 47) and put tons of time playing (well, wandering around accomplishing not much) so I never got far, but that music...wow, is it fantastic. Might have to give this one another go.

This is great! I wrote this off as a bad rental when I was a kid because there was no manual and I didn't have a clue what to do. I ended up ordering a copy because of this review and it's really a hidden gem.

This was my absolute favorite game when I was a kid, me and my father spend hours upon hours, days upon days, over a couple of years trying to figure this out together. From like x-mas of 1989 until my SNES had taken over and all my NES games got put in a box because my NES no longer worked. I still have my copy and I don't think I beat it until I was in my early 20's. Finding the final store hidden behind a block was the key that we could never find when we player. Now I hold this game in great reverence and still say it's my favorite whenever anyone asks me now. It's definitely in my top 10 and always will be. I will always hold it close just because of the bonding it caused with my dad who has always been my hero and I have always wished I was nearly the man he is. Now I have my kids and I have tried to get one to play it with, but none of them seem to be interested in it, it's not Minecraft or ROBLOX hahaha. Thank You for your video, it brings back a lot of great memories and seeing someone else love this game as much as I have is wonderful... I have enjoyed all of your videos that I have watched so far and am working my way through your entire catalog and will look for you on twitch as well. I am a diehard NES and SNES player and have hundreds of games and love watching videos and reviews of them, you do a great job of it and your voice is beautiful and relaxing, so they are great to watch at night to help me relax and eventually go to sleep to. Keep up the great work

@@hungrygoriya If I had to recommend a game for you. I'd ask you to "try" and beat Solstice on the NES. My favorite game of all time. It's so good I bought the Solstice car lol. It is a very difficult game for most players but I'm sure you can overcome.

I absolutely loved this game as a kid. I must have put 100 hours into it. Thanks for a fantastic review!

Love this game the graphics the music etc and the whole story

Hands down best NES game music of all time. I played this game so much as a kid but had no idea what to do. I think I just wanted to listen to the music lol. I've beaten it many time though using cheat codes to go directly to the final boss dragon. It's surprisingly easy considering how difficult the rest of the game is. Also, Gamecenter CX did an amazing episode on this game. "dragon slayer iv"

The soundtrack is pretty unforgettable! I'll have to see if I can find that episode of Game Center CX. I love that show!

This was a game I remember borrowing from a friend when I was in ye grade school years, and since I had no access to the manual I was greatly overwhelmed and intrigued by the large open world all at once. I never did grasp any of the mechanics or how things worked, I just picked a random character and went exploring. My friend told me how he thought he glitched the game one time, attacking a wall in the giant dragon room causing the dragon to escape its chamber and attack him. I remember trying every single wall in that room and never really having anything happen. Only to find out decades later that the dragon actually was the final boss of the game and not some mere graphical decoration like I ended up thinking before returning the game to my friend. This game really brings back some memories of a bygone era in my life. Simpler times, when the internet did not dictate every waking hour of my existence. For me it was school, going outside to play with friends or playing my NES on that little black and white crt tv in my bedroom until my parents forced me to go to bed. Simpler times indeed.

I beat this game around 15 years ago or so when I was already an grown arse adult. And that was without any help from the manual nor internet since my computer was broken at a time. Discovering all of the silliness this game had to offer was painful but also very rewarding for bragging rights alone. My only regret is that I didn't get to play this game when I was 15+ years earlier since I would've loved this game back then since I had nothing but time in my hands.

I never owned a copy, but I put MANY hours into this game.I've never beaten it, but I do know someone who can beat it in a ridiculously short time and it pisses me off and amazes me to watch him do so. One of the best games on the system. This is one I wish got a sequel or perhaps a modern remake.

I love it too. Is the person you know that can get through it quickly a speedrunner? I know lots of those folks and their skill and mastery at games is astounding!

One of my favorite 8-bit gems, for sure. Very nice review! If you ever get a chance, I highly recommend trying out the MSX2 version of the game as well. It lacks the scrolling of this version, instead opting for a flip-screen approach (as you approach the edge of the screen, it flips to the next screen), but in most other regards, it's a more well-balanced experience -- item placement has been swapped around so that items are in more dynamic and interesting locations than in the NES version, Lyll's section of the maze has been almost completely redesigned (and is even more fun to explore), the central area with the dragon has been shifted a bit so that every family member has access to every area now, and more painting warps have been added for Roas, including several that only require 1 or 2 crowns to use, which ALSO includes one that warps him all the way to the end of Xemn's area -- meaning, if you're skilled enough, you can SKIP XEMN'S AREA ALTOGETHER and just complete it with Roas instead! Oh, and the cryptic means through which you buy the shield has also been changed to something you might actually be able to discover on your own without needing to read about it in a walkthrough. Imagine that! ;) It makes an already great game that much better, and is on one of my favorite retro game systems to boot (seriously, the MSX is a highly underrated bastion of incredible gaming experiences!), so yeah... definitely recommended!

That's really interesting! I've seen some of a playthrough of the MSX-2 version but didn't realize that there were so many interesting differences or changes. I especially love the title screen from that one as well... such cute little introductions for each character! One day I hope I can find a way to play some MSX games!

When you first power on the system and that brick wall falls apart, it's a real attention-grabber, and I love how the grandparents just kind of give a cute little nod when they walk out, but not QUITE in sync with one another. It's a really nice attention to detail. At any rate, I just discovered your channel like, a few days ago, but have really enjoyed the reviews I've watched thus far. Honestly would like to see this come on the NESO so that many can play it. I believe this was my fourth NES game to own, and while I didn't make any progress, I love exploring the massive dungeon and seeing what I would find~ Thanks for this review, HG!

You're very welcome! I think it was released in a Namco compilation (Namco Museum Archives Vol. 2 I think) for the Switch if you're really hankering to play it with that system. It'd be nice if it was just available online without any extra cost, I agree!

Yeah, it's not going to be for everyone. I personally loved it being a big fan of Zelda 1 and Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap, among others like it! And thanks... I tried a few new things with this video and I was happy with how they came out. Glad you noticed :)

A new HG video must come out of lurk mode. HG nice job as always. Every video you release makes me want to play the game, or at least watch a let’s play.

@@Obenfiquista81 I read through the manuals for Zelda 1 and Faxanadu over and over again when I was a kid... I'll have to look through the Metroid manual again. I loved the boss depictions!

I like those rare games where you get to use multiple characters for one adventure. While some of that looks intimidating, it does look like a quick learning experience to get around. Puzzle mechanics in NES games are always welcome as well! Great review as always!

Thanks :) I think you'd really enjoy it if you gave it a whirl. I was intimidated by how ridiculously vast the dungeon was but also by the consumables, but both weren't that terrible. I was going to play with a map to orient myself and I didn't even end up using it at all. It's easy enough to wind through consistently once you figure out where to go.

I played this game with my cousins as a kid. Amazing size and depth and detail for a NES game. Sound track I would argue is THE best of all original NES games. Zelda may have some of the most iconic music, this games music is A1 and a super accomplishment of what can be achieved in this format. I have no idea why this game has not had an update. A remake of this would probably kill in the switch. Make it happen!

I also love how you mentioned Legacy Of The Wizard had one of the best soundtracks for gaming at the time. I agree completely and I still enjoy listening to this music off a USB drive as well playing the original game on my nes. Ooo you mentioned Faxanado too! Subscription added!

I was introduced to the game by a friend who had a whole, very comprehensive playthrough in his channel (he's TheRenesance, by the way) and I've seen him play it through on his stream as well. Just an absolutely delightful game, and even better that it's related to one of my favourite games ever.

So great to see someone else who truly appreciates this fantastic game! I finished Legacy of the Wizard as a kid back in the 80’s! Back then it was all about homemade graph paper maps and exploring dungeons all weekend with friends sleeping over! Good times!

I would play a remaster in a heartbeat. It's such a great game and I'd love to see how they'd reimagine some of the locations in the dungeon.

This is one of my favorite games-- I used to play it every time I went to my friend's house when I was a kid. I just love the idea of an ordinary family who lives in a cabin just outside the secret entrance to this enormous underground labyrinth full of monsters, puzzles, castles, and shops. Wouldn't it be awesome to find something like that in your backyard? ; )

I mean... the kid from Blaster Master also had a similar backyard hole filled with mystery and intrigue. I wonder if he ever met the Drasle family from Legacy of the Wizard.

Man, I remember playing this game something like 25 years ago. I was a pile of mush then, so I really had no idea what to do but the game was still really fun and pretty to play.

Found this game complete in box today, hooray! Even though I already had the game loose, I picked up the CIB copy based on your advice about the benefits of having the manual. Plus, reading old manuals full of quirky material is one of my favorite parts of gaming

LOTW is one of my favorite NES games, took forever to figure out how to beat the game but it was well worth it. On top of everything else the music is top notch. This game is a love hate relations with a lot of people but if anyone had troubles beating it don't give up. Take it as a challenge and beat the f****n game already. When you do finally beat the game, pat yourself on your back a few times, you deserve it!!

Funny thing is this was probably the first "metroidvania" I ever played (if not that, then Blaster Master) which makes it odd that I discovered Metroid later and still liked it. This is also definitely a game I owned as a kid but could never beat until I was an adult--it was very much like that advertisement for Equinox that used to be in magazines... and the feeling of finally conquering a game you could not topple as a kid is SO satisfying. One advice I would give people is... try to save Xemn for last or next-to-last. You'll always face the four bosses in a set order and I the latter ones assume you'll be using someone with a stronger attack. On one of my playthrus I got to a boss with Lyll that literally the little indian-feather girl could not damage. So, lesson learned there. Also, sometimes I love to turn this game on and just listen to the overworld music. It takes me right back to beautiful mornings in the good old days.

It's cool that you got to play it when you were younger, and I think I would've loved that experience if I'd had the opportunity to try it back then too. I enjoyed it so much as an adult and was glad when I finally started finding some crowns and making progress. The exploring on its own was a great experience though! And you're absolutely right about saving Xemn for last. I had no idea how the bosses worked and just happened to start with him, so he was the person I fought the first boss with with Pochi being the last. It was definitely tricky, but I made it! The music is something else. I love it! Every track is fantastic and it's a soundtrack I find myself putting on regularly to listen to again.

@@hungrygoriya So I just found out that.... Legacy of the Wizard is available for Nintendo Switch. Two versions, actually. the NES one is in one of the Namco collections. But there's a series called Egg Project or something, which does modern releases of old Japanese PC games... their most recent release was Dragon Slayer 4: Drasle Family, aka the MSX version of Legacy of the Wizard. I bought it (its like seven dollars) and while its similar its not exactly the same.

The hours I put into this game are mine to cherish.

Hungry Goriya my experience was just as you said. Felt like everyone had this as a kid but no one knew how to play it. Flea market purchases with no manual, I guess. Once I finally sat down to try and learn it, I was in love.

@@ZBR_ProXP I honestly don't know how you couldn't be in love with this with a little time and patience. It's honestly so good and the literal cheapest game I have in my NES collection. I think I paid $5 for this and it gave me hours and hours of fun. I was totally intimidated coming into it but I'm glad that it turned out to be as good as it was.

New subscriber here. I could listen to you talk all day. Great video. I liked this game a lot as a kid but never got anywhere. Maybe I'll give it another try sometime.

Thanks for subscribing! I think it's worth trying again as an adult. Things make a lot more sense and you'll be able to put things together a lot more, especially if you check out the manual's great help. I was mostly fine and I'd never played it before.

A timely video, as this game is on the recently released Namco Meseum Archives Vol. 2 for modern consoles. I have never played Legacy Of The Wizard but I certainly remember seeing it for rent as a kid. Will finally give this a shot sometime soon.

Loved this game but it was always really difficult for me when i was little. It came out when I was 6 and only could get one of the crowns. It was much trickier than some of the other games and it's related to Faxanadu, so you should def play it! Great video!

This is cool, I like how you get to pick from a family of characters. It’s like a game from last year I played, Children of Morta. That had Diablo -style combat though.

I'll have to check into that... I remember you mentioning it before in one of your update videos. I'm really excited for another game that is coming out called Orange Island that was made in the spirit of Legacy of the Wizard. That should be fun!

I was one who never got far but I always love putting this game in for a little romp every so often 😊 I would rent it constantly just because I loved the exploration. When I started to build up my collection again it was one of the first I had to pick up! one day I do want to bunker down and get through to the end. Definitely have to find a copy of that manual!
