Leg Strengthening Exercises For Parkinson's Patients
Dr. Puru Dhawan has shared some helpful leg exercises for Parkinson's patients in an informative video. Parkinson’s patients often struggle with balance and walking, which is why Dr. Dhawan recommends building up leg strength. Weak legs can lead to dependence on family members for daily activities.
Here are some leg exercises for Parkinson's patients:
1) Seated knee lift: This exercise helps to enhance muscular endurance, balance, and coordination in the muscles.
2) Leg extension exercises: Sit straight in a chair and slowly straighten your legs until your knees are fully extended. Hold the end position for a second, then slowly return to the starting position.
3) Sitting calf raise exercise: Sit straight in a chair and slowly raise your heels, pause for a second, then lower them back down to the starting position.
4) Side leg extension exercise: Spread your right leg out as wide as you can and keep your back straight.
Dr. Dhawan also recommended these exercises for patients who may be too afraid to walk. He also advised that the speed of exercise does not matter in Parkinson's disease.
