Leftover 2010 2.5 HP 4-stroke Mercury outboard first start

Комедия

My local Mercury dealer had this 2010 Mercury 2.5 HP 4-stroke outboard advertised on CraigsList for $500. This is a first start, after adding 10 oz of the included oil bottle, fresh gas. The break-in says 10 minutes of idle, then varying the throttle staying under half-throttle for the next hour and 50 minutes, followed by an hour of up to three-quarter throttle, then anywhere from idle to full throttle.
My old Yamaha was lighter (1989 2-stroke 2-hp), but I do like how this Merc (made by Tohatsu) has a neutral selector for starting and running the carb dry with the fuel valve off, also the throttle in the tiller is nice for one-handed operation.

Bought one last year with just 1hr of running time on it.. starts very easy n ticks over perfectly from cold.. one i will say is they don't like stale or old fuel... must be fresh fuel and if possible the slightly higher octane petrol most garages offer... tappets were a bit noisey but now they to tolerance its almost silent when on idle. I change the oil every 10hrs.... In all im very impressed

UPDATE: I sold the engine, simply don't have a need for it as I have yet to use the dinghy. Compared to my old 2-stroke it was harder to start, the throttle setting had to be exactly as directed on the handle. If I needed a small engine again I would go with a used 2-stroke 2.5 or 3.3.

Two days on lake. First day started it four different times no problems. Second day we go miles down the lake I cut it off to fill with new 100% unleaded and it will not start again! Tried off and on for hours while trying to get back with troller. Finally called for a tow from husband and when back and tied up I tried and it started in two pulls. Very frustrated !

$500 was indeed a deal. In 2015 I managed to find a new/unused 2012 Mercury (Tohatsu) 6hp 4-Stroke for just under $600. It has been a great little outboard.

Seems like a small tank?

Yes, mine is very hard to start and will stall for no good reason. Throttle will bog down then stall out. The carb is a poor design and I'm sure that is the issue. Somehow there is not enough air getting into the engine to keep it running.

Chris, check out my update below. This engine is heavy and doesn't like to idle. I sold mine and got an older 2-stroke (lighter and more reliable). For a 10' you may want more power if you don't mind the weight of a heavier engine. If looking for a small engine check out the Honda, the are louder (air cooled 2.3hp), but lighter and have much better reviews than the small Mercury/Tohatsu ones.

two problems, it needs fuel filter to be placed as fast as possible, and newer start it out of water, not even for second as impeller is weak and will crack instant upon dry start.. For rest is fine litle engine..

I've had one for about 12 years....I've never used a fuel filter but I think it's a good idea. Since I've taken it out of the box it starts easy (I have changed the spark plug) but it takes awhile to warm up. It's kind of inconvenient to have to gradually push the choke in and give it throttle but once its warm it's not a problem. One thing about the impeller: I've never replaced it but I live in a cold climate and before storing it for winter I pull the safety lanyard so it wont start and I pull the rope a few times to cycle out any excess water. If theres water in the transom and it freezes it could cause damage.

Interesting point. Maybe not as important in large bodies of water, but some lakes ban 2-strokes and I see why, my old 2-stroke would leave quite the oil film in the test barrel.

It runs well, but is not as forgiving as 2-strokes. For example, when warm a 2-stroke will start at basically any throttle setting, with this engine you have to pay attention to the throttle position... choose "restart" when warm, if not it will not start..
