To help Joe out here, there IS a difference between a mech and a robot. A robot is autonomous and acts entirely on its own. A mech is piloted, either directly or remotely, and cannot act without input from the pilot. This should help Joe keep the weebs at bay.

@@GameSack I'm guessing you didn't get to the part where the idol girl, Lynn Minmay, starts singing to help end the war. Not joking, that's in the series. The good news about the licensing is that Harmony Gold has either agreed to or was forced to allow various Macross projects to be brought to the US (though I've heard the original series is still in limbo here, though it's supposed to be on Disney+ of all things in certain regions).

Macross: Do You Remember Love is in my personal top 5 animated film list. Beautifully animated film, impressive battle sequences, including the memorable climatic final battle. Damn shame that it hasn't seen a western re-release since VHS because, at least for one reason, a certain company I won't name allegedly refuses to allow anything that may detract from their version of the story. They've recently let up on sequel stuff but are still really stingy about anything related to the OG show.

The important thing for someone with a bi-weekly KZread show(on Sundays) that features zany ending skits to know about Macross as a whole is that there's a Super Famicom horizontal shooter called Choujikuu Yousai Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie. Is it the best shooter on the system? It may just be the best, actually. It's great, anyway. It was also LEFT IN JAPAN, and I didn't see it come up on a search of the Game Sack website. I'm very subtly dropping a hint.

Lifeforce has one of my favorite soundtracks. I was a big US Robotech fan, watched all 85 original "trilogy" episodes multiple times, read all the "Jack McKinney" books, had the Robotech Art books and the Palladium Robotech RPG books, had a couple of Veritech fighters and the Mospeada Cycle toys... We got Robotech Battlecry in the US, but my understanding over the years was always that SDF Macross was the superior game, and that stung a bit...

For the Macross game, if i recall, the mc was on perimeter duty when an enemy scout ship almost crash into his plane watching the same broadcast as mc which causes the battle in-game. Another thing, the mission sequence at 18:00 was all friendlies must be at SDF-1 before the ship 'fold' into space to escape orbital bombardment from enemy fleets. The game by itself is very solid and did not suffer from gameplay issues that plague the other previous Macross game franchise. This is also the only game that afaik, follows both anime and movie storyline in a single game.

Super dimensional fortress macross is the original tv anime series and SDF Macross:Do You Remember Love is a movie remake of that series, they share some of the basic plot but overall they are different continuities and have many differences that people who haven't seen the original series will have issues picking up on. Both are good for what they are but the movie is easier for newcomers to watch to see if they like the series or not. Macross is EXTREMELY popular in japan and is probably one of the most famous mecha anime outside of japan, probably only surpassed by mobile suit gundam.

I hate the fact you just made me research WHY Robotech is named Robotech... Harmony Gold was trying to bring Macross to the US, but the Toys were already licensed by a different company, Revell, who was selling them as Diecast Toys and Models called "Robotech Defenders" At the time, American television required over 80 episodes to qualify for Syndication and Macross was only 25-26 so they had to license 3 different, unrelated Japense Mecha Anime series and stitch them together into one. (Macross, Southern Cross, and Mospeada) The two companies made a deal, and Robotech was born.

@@GameSack Had to double check, it's 65 episodes for syndication. Though shows will usually have 80-100 episodes. Voltron had 124 episodes, 20 of which were made for America only. 72 for the Lion Force, 52 for the Vehicle Force. There was supposed to be a 3rd team of 3 Robots that could combine into 6 different super robots. The toys were released, but the episodes never made it to air due to how bad Vehicle Force did.

Nintendo did technically released Joy Mech Fight in the West through the NES Nintendo Switch Online on September 6th, 2023. (it's still untranslated and Nintendo did released Joy Mech Fight on the Japanese NES Nintendo Switch Online on January 16th, 2019) So it's technically not Japan-only anymore and got officially imported by Nintendo like The Mysterious Murasame Castle for example.

It's a 1v1 fighter jet game set in a world that's just too darn peaceful and the only solution is air-to-air missiles! Developed by Funcom, the Norwegian studio behind classics like The Longest Journey, it was originally set to be published globally by JVC for PS1 and Saturn but ended up being cancelled only to be later picked up by another publisher for a Japan-only PS1 exclusive release. The game is still mostly in english with some amazing voice acting so it's a great title for importing to your own collection.

On Salamander 2, my buddy and I busted up laughing when the final boss says "I'm gonna SCARE you like you've never been SCARED before!" Also, I wanted Macross so bad because of AM2 back in the day. Watching this episode was the first time I've seen it running at 60fps. I really missed out on that one.

@@jessragan6714Battlecry? No, that's a PS2/GameCube/Xbox game. It's not that bad, but gets bogged down by having way too many escort missions. I have no idea why devs took so long to figure out that nothing sucks more than a darn escort mission.

Do You Remember Love is a movie that came out after the original Macross. So you can say the first campaign follows the TV show and the second follows the movie. There was a rather more serious Ape Escape game that came out for the PS2 that was Japan only. It would have been nice to see it localized. Sadly, I don't remember the title.

Macross is the big ass ship you had to land on, in case no one else told you already. :P I never watched much of it, though I did read a bit about it back in the 90's. I do remember watching Macross Plus, which is a follow up series, but I barely remember anything of it. Anyways, thanks for the great episode!

I remember reading a Game Informer magazine article about Super Dimensional Fortress Macross or SDF Macross. I was bummed when it didn't come here, but at least we got Robotech Battlecry and Robotech Invasion, both of which I feel were underrated.

Far East of Eden's character design is very unique, reminds me of Climax's stuff in Shining Force & Shining in the Darkness on the Megadrive. Had to check if there's any connection, there's not. It's just the late 80's and early 90's when they still knew how to draw interesting characters. The chara design is by Torajirō Tsujino and he worked on many of the Tengai Makyō games.

I’m going by memory as I saw Robotech on TV (local independent station in Hickory, NC) back in the 80s. I think it was called a varitech fighter in the Macross Saga part of Robotech. If you saw the Anime, you’d probably know what is going on.

I remember Robotech growing up, and from what I gathered, it was an amalgamation of several episodes (I'm guessing of Macross) that was dubbed in English, and is kind of like an abridged version or something. Not everyone got Robotech though, when I was in Japan I went to a Gundam cafe (as you do in Japan, haha) and I met a Malaysian fan there, and when I mentioned if he ever watched Robotech, he had no idea what I was talking about, lol.

22:20 I dreamt of this game for my SEGA Megadrive because I was a big fan of the anime (and did my best to accomodate with erratic programmation of it), saw the screenshots on some magazines back then but never saw the game. I think I tried once to play the ROM of it in Japan, but quickly abandoned because of the language barrier.
