🖋LEFT-HANDED BRUSH LETTERING CALLIGRAPHY: Ultimate Beginner Guide for Lefties Learning Calligraphy
**DOWNLOAD CALLIGRAPHY SUPPLIES AND EQUIPMENT LIST** bit.ly/39JiEXp
In my past few KZread videos, I've been requested by some of you to create some left-handed calligraphy tutorials!
Being a leftie myself, I know that there aren't a lot of resources out there available for learning calligraphy left-handed. However, this doesn't mean that you can't learn how to do calligraphy or hand lettering.
In this week's video, I go over how to hold your pen, position your paper, and the basic strokes you need to learn in order to form letters. With time and practice, you'll have beautiful calligraphy to use on cards, signage, and more in no time!
I hope that you find these tips helpful - let me know what your biggest takeaway was. Happy Lettering!

Absolutely godsend! Been wondering how to get start practicing as a lefties. Like how you explain how to hold the pen in angles terms 45°/90° relative to the letters and paper. Makes it so much clearer to understand.

Great video...any videos on using a broad tip pen like the Sharpie Calligraphic Pens? I can't seem to make it work. My upstrokes are thick and my downstrokes are 50/50! LOL!!

Hey Elisa! I actually haven't even used the Sharpie pens to do calligraphy. Do you have other brush pens to try? And are you having the same problems with them? I would definitely try to go slower and also practice the basic strokes very very slowly! 👍🙂
My daughter is a lefty... any tips for how to keep from smearing the ink as you write?
@DinaLu
Жыл бұрын
Hey Mindy, yeah that's tricky! I think it depends on the pen and paper. Usually with the pens I use, it doesn't smudge because it dries fast. But if it's a more smudgeable pen, once I write part of a sentence and I'm approaching the part where I could potentially smudge my ink, I actually lift my hand up so it doesn't smudge (but it's super awkward). Haha hope that makes sense.
This would be the perfect video if it wasn't for the headache-inducing jingle all the way through it. Is there a way to switch if off, please, so we can actually follow what's being said (we're not native English)? That aside, it seems like this is still the right-handed pattern, isn't it? My entire family is left-handed and we can't seem to master it this way because it's a counter-natural movement. We naturally put more force on an upward movement than on a downward movement, as opposed to right-handed people. Left-handed: up=pressure (push), down=relaxation (pull) and right-handed: up=relaxation (pull) and down= pressure (push), resulting in thin and thick lines. If you're writing from left to right at least, because writing mirrored from right to left is easy for us this way.

Hahaha omg sorry about the music 🤣 there's no way to turn it off. But in my videos now I have the music turned down A LOT. So the way I do calligraphy is basically the same way that right handed people do it, except I am just using my left hand and holding the pen in a different way. I've actually never seen somebody do calligraphy in the way you described where when you go up, you put more pressure. Well, I believe that there is no right way to do calligraphy, so if you like the end result, you can do it whichever way you want, but I think this method is the easiest to get used to. It does take some time to get used to changing the pressure of your hand going up and down (took 1 month for me) because naturally we only write with one pressure level. So I'm wondering if maybe you are finding it challenging just because you aren't used to changing the pressure of your pen?
Me: oh yay! Finally, tips for lefties. Dina: So as a leftie, we don't need to angle the paper like righties do. Me *who always has my paper tilted*: fuckity

@@DinaLu thanks Dina, it all seemed to work this morning. Thanks for your help
I seem to be struggling with my underturns. I find that I'm not finding the right balance with my page and how I hold my pen as a left handed. I'm trying to find what works for me but I find that it's taking me a long time in the overturns and underturns the most. My strokes are not perfect and shaky. Any tips on how make hands steady???
@DinaLu
2 жыл бұрын
Hey vancitygurl! Having un-steady stokes is really normal and common when people start with a brush pen, and especially on those underturns and overturns, so you're not alone! I'd say GO SLOWER, and really try to focus on the transitions area, but keeping your hand relaxed (not gripping the pen too tightly). Practice for a few minutes a day, and see how your strokes are in a week. Sometimes, we just need a break 😃
Hi so I know that this video was uploaded a long time ago but I just got a calligraphy set for Christmas and I followed your video to help me start, but I’m finding that my up strokes are way to thick, like their the same size as my down strokes. I was wondering if you knew why this was happening, like it the type of ink, the nib, the way I do it, I just don’t know what I’m doing wrong. ( I’m a leftie, and I’m using a fountain pen ✒️) Could you help? Thanks 🙏.

This is happening to me to sometimes on like the v and a where you do a thicker stroke to a thinner stroke but they are both thick I lift the pen to do the thinner stroke but it doesn't always look that good I would love it if someone could help me I use brush pens.
@DinaLu
2 жыл бұрын
Hey Sapphire_Tea, with fountain pens, I believe you don't get as much thickness when you go down as compared to a pointed pen. I haven't used fountain pens much, but that might be the reason. (I think some fountain pens might not even have thickness variation) Do you have a pointed pen or a brush pen? @sapphire_tea
@DinaLu
2 жыл бұрын
@@alexascott8096 I'd definitely try going wayyyy slower and concentrating more on the transition area. Make sure you're lifting up the pressure BEFORE getting to the bottom, so that once you're AT the bottom, it's already thin.
I'm tight handed but I want to practice my left hand. Because many times I feel like doing many things with my left hand. Can I know that anyone has the same interests and suggestions. Thank you
I’ve realized that it’s not gonna happen and now I’m drawing staircases :)

I rest my pencil on my third finger and my pen on my third finger. Does this matter ?

The way you hold the pen doesn't really matter, as long as you can get the angles right!
I must be a weirdo left handed person because every single left handed calligraphy video I've seen, the person doesn't turn their paper to the right. I write everything with my paper completely turned to the right.
