His elegance, coolness, sex appeal were unique! Hollywood initially ignored him like Bronson and Eastwood, but Sergio recognized the qualities of all three. Van Cleef was a WW2 veteran with real combat experience - like Bronson, Marvin, Palance, Matthau, Borgnine, Douglas, Kennedy, Lee, Mifune, Steiger... these guys didn't just play the tough guys, they WERE tough. They had balls of steel.

My favorite western actor of all time. My grandpa loved westerns and kung fu films, watching all day once retired, and especially loved Lee Van Cleef for his bad guy roles. He was a man of a few words. He would say what a heartless guy, and curse him out lol, but his acting is amazing. He was THE WESTERN. RIP Lee Van Cleef and grandpa. I hope theyre filming one up there.🙏🎬🫡🤠

There were two scenes with the hunchback in bars. (Klaus Kinski portrayed the hunchback) The first scene was when Colonel Douglas Mortemore (Lee Van Cleef) strolled casually over to hunchback and struck a match on his hump. Mr. Hunchback blew the match out, then Lee Van Cleef removed the cigarette from Huncher's mouth and Lee lit his cigarette that way. As you said, one of the best ever scenes with so much intense tension and yet not one word spoken from either character. Lee with his unblinking stare. Klaus Kinski a.k.a. Huncher (I call him) with his facial muscles twitching, his odd lips quivering. That was the first of two such scenes. The other outlaws convinced Huncher to leave with no incident. Howsumever, (Old South Southern Speak of 'however') the second such scene in another saloon, Huncher and Indigo and their gang were at a bar, Lee Van Cleef was eating, Clint Eastwood stood in the background observing. Huncher slithered over to Lee Van Cleef, who was eating, and asked if he remembered him. Lee shook his head "negative" said "emmmemmm" not even a "no". Huncher grew more angry. "Sure you do! El Paso!" And added something about "Well, if it isn't the smoker!" And challenged Lee Van Cleef to light up, have a smoke now. Lee Van Clever says, "Well, I generally wait 10 minutes until after I eat to smoke!" Man was The Man Lee, getting Huncher all riled up! So Huncher Boy with his facial and lip muscles just a twitchn' away, warns, "In 10 Minutes you'll be smoking in HELL!" Well, myownself (Old South speak for 'my own self') knew it was Huncher Boy who in 10 minutes would be smokin' in hell! And he was. With his hunch on fire. Lesson learned in this was do NOT mess with the best of the bad, THE MAN Lee Van Cleef! 'Cause when hes bad he is better, and when he is good he is very very good!

Very entertaining tribute of a great actor. Lee didn't have the fame of a Clint Eastwood, but always made a very significant contribution to each film he made. Leone loved him because he also had the great face for those famous close-ups. He had a huge aura that really stood out on film.
