Lee Trevino | The Open Official Film 1971

Спорт

The 100th Open, played in fine weather at Royal Birkdale, featured two charismatic players of differing pedigrees.
Lee Trevino won the Claret Jug for the first time and, following triumphs at the U.S. Open and the Canadian Open, completed a unique hat-trick of victories within only four weeks.
He was playing in his third Open. Lu Liang Huan, of Taiwan, had been a professional since 1955 and had played in The Open only once before. Doffing his pork pie hat wherever he went, “Mr Lu”, as he was known, immediately became a crowd favourite.

A forgotten name, sadly, and I totally agree. He and TC Chen, the first Asian golfers to really make the game popular in the Far East. Well said, from a fan in Saigon. 😊

Interesting that there was a period in the 70s and 80s where it was officially known as the British Open.

Mainly because the US Open was also called the Open, so Brits would call their open The Open, and Yanks would call their open The Open. So to save confusion they were both called by their countries names for most their history but now we call it the Open Championship because it was the first I guess.

Every round of the top three finishers - Trevino, Lu and Jacklin, was either a 69, 70 or 71.

One of the best British Opens ever! Could you post the 1969 Open when Tony Jacklin won.

When I was a kid, Tony Jacklin was right up there for me, another largely forgotten great great player.

Trevino was on quite a roll back then. He was fresh off beating Nicklaus in the US Open. I believe he also won the Canadian Open that same year.

Poor Mr. Lu, he was visibly shaken. Apparently she told him "Mr Lu, get another birdie for me"' And he did.

Not that Trevino wouldn't have been able to pull it out, but man, hitting that lady had to fuck with Mr. Lu's head.

Compare these players with Tiger Woods - no spitting, swearing, club throwing, sulking face even after a good shot, walking off the 18th before his opponent has finished...Happy days, the game will be far better for his absence.

They did the same thing. Media just didnt show it. Trevino may have not he was an anomaly. Always positive and happy. This very tournament Nicklaus threw his glove at his caddy in disgust. Nicklaus had his tantrums. Palmer and ballesteros as well.

The woman was being ridiculously over-dramatic after being hit with the ball. ...Notice how the British fans wore conservative, dark colors as opposed to American gold fans and players in America who were wearing bright, psychedelic colors and styles at that time.

I know "things were different" back in 1971, but Lee Trevino's banter crosses the line when playing the final hole. At this point, he was leading the tournament by one shot over his playing partner, Taiwanese golfer Lu Liang-Huan. At 44:36 Trevino says, "If he wins, we're going to have a lot of flied lice next week". To be fair to Trevino, his racially insensitive comment was met with laughter from those within earshot, including Lu. Maybe a local rule was in force on the 18th, whereby golfers were encouraged to roast their opponents.

As that may be, but remember two things: 1) the Merry Mex was very much spot on about how he would have been told to enter through the kitchen at Augusta, and 2) recall how, years later, long after Mr Lee Elder, that sanctimonious dickhead, Curtis Strange, said about a kid named Tiger that he had "a lot to learn." Hey, Curtis, how well did that age? 😅 Dick.

Lu could tell Lee to go wash his car, and Lee could respond with "go do my laundry." Good fun, camraderie, and digs all around. But in the end, it's all about kick ass golf on a hard ass links course.
