Certainly good for socio-political commentary. But my favorite is "Wandrin' Star" as the song reflects more on the person and not the people. Many of the other songs were about the melancholy of the prospectors of the west in the gold rush era.
Lee Marvin's "singing" voice was "like rain gurgling down a rusty pipe." Co-star Jean Seberg said that.
On this day in 1970 {April 4th} Dick Clark conducted an interview with actor Lee Marvin on his ABC-TV Saturday-afternoon program, 'American Bandstand'... At the time the movie 'Paint Your Wagon' was playing in theaters across the U.S.A., in the film Mr. Marvin performed two songs, "Wandering Star" and "The First Thing You Know"... Lee Marvin received an Golden Globe nomination for 'Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy'... Mr. Marvin passed away at the age of 63 on August 29th, 1987... May he R.I.P.
Fantastic! Lee Marvin! What a great actor was he! A great film ahead of it's time!
The first thing you know is Lee Marvin is a consummate Pro . He can definitely carry a tune. Has he ever recorded an album . He has quite a good gritty basso voice .

You need to have your ears checked. Marvin couldn't sing his way out of a paper bag. That was part of the charm in this "musical" where none of the leads could sing. Jean Seberg had to be dubbed, so it boggles the mind how terrible her singing really was.
Lee Marvin was SO great! Great in a comedy and great in drama. A chilling, scary villain. I had to get older before I really appreciated him, but I enjoy watching his old movies so much. What a treasure.
Love this film. Great actors. Love the music.

Applause from the balcony!!!!
"You look around the human race and you gotta wonder what God was thinkin about." Damn, that hits hard. Especially when I'm now constantly thinking what God must think when he loks down upon his creation.
Wonderful film !! Wish there were more of them like Oklahoma , Seven brides for Seven brothers , such fantastic actors who could not only act but don't brilliantly. Oh I miss these actors so much !!

They're much too 'civilized' for a classic song with humor. Great musical. Great post.
It still seems fitting to this day an age. (yes, I know Lee Marvin can't sing worth a hoot). It's not how he sings, it's what he is singing about.

Exactly. People constantly pick on it forgetting both the fact that neither he or clint eastwood are professional singers (there's no autotune back then) and there's nobody around that could pull off the character. So you make do with what you got.

this movie was so ahead of its time; i think it will be the biggest classic in twenty years. Amazon only had a few copies, which were going for over $20. IT has become rare. IT is the best musical ever made.
That should be the Conservationists Anthem. Everything mentioned in the song is absolutely accurate. By what we've done to this beautiful World since we evolved, we should be totally ashamed of ourselves.

Very good job dudes and well done!! Congratulations 991.31% yo throughout the 2nd sizzling patriotic week of said jubilant July y'all. Lee Marvin's "singing" voice was "like rain gurgling down a rusty pipe." Co-star Jean Seberg said that.
Listening to this song, I couldn't help but notice how much it reminded me of My Fair Lady with Rex Harrison In both films main characters make commentary about society and how people refuse to be or do their their best. In PYW Ben sings about civilization messing up the world, and in MFL Higgins complains about the lazy way people speak. The cadence of The First Thing you know is quite similar to "Let A Woman in Your Life" . One interesting thing about the movie Paint Your Wagon is that it did a lot better in England than it did in America

Illustrates a point that has relevance today, like it did then. All western films, even and especially this musical, reflect developments in 'modern' life. Civilisation - well how many challenges to the old fashioned order of marriage, military and even restrictions on freedom because of the law have we seen protested against. He mentions California, which after the Second World War became homeland of the hippies, gays, liberals and mind, body, spirit movements. Those things themselves represent an 'escape' from a repressive way of life.
@therespectedlex9794

One thing I would add is the issue of gender. Women's lib was another liberal cause. Chivalry, and the respected assumption of betrothal of a man to a woman, and vice versa, go back a much longer way. Men, granted some brutal men, hacked the wilds cooperatively, started them for everyone else to enjoy. Then a new civilised effete order settle those places, and make those men criminals, outcasts and malcontents. Misandry, gynocentrism and competition on the wrong terms then abounds.
What up Monnahans.
