Lex is absolutely right! Led Zeppelin live never played a song the same way twice. They always would go off and improv a lot of their songs and change it up live.

The Ocean is about how the audience looks from the stage; the people moving around are like undulating waves of water. In the lyrics, Robert sings about the girl who won his heart and how she's only 4 years old - that's a reference to his daughter, Carmen, who was 4 years old at the time.

Y'all omitted the start where John Bonham goes "We've done four already and now we're steady. And we go one, two three, four." Happy New Year! the meaningof the song is The Ocean is the fans out on the floor of the arena, That was how Robert Plant perceived the fans.

Most of their shows WERE ad-libbed. They prided themselves on their improvisational skills. They never played or sang a song the same way twice. A lot of their shows sometimes went 3 to 3 1/2 hours long with huge improvised sections...with vocal changes, drum solos, tempo changes, key signature changes, and elongated guitar solos. Sometimes right in the middle of a song, they would switch to a different song and then go back to the original. They employed dynamics. They believed in a concept that they called thunder and whisper where the song would have a slow section and then switch and go faster. Sometimes a song would be soft and beautiful and then BAAM! - it would be loud and raucus..hyper-talented musicians.

I know you've already done Since I've Been Loving You, but I would highly recommend you check out the live version from this concert. One of the best live rock performances of all time IMO. Cheers!

My suggestion is to listen to the studio version of a song. For a first time reaction. There are a few reasons. First and maybe the most important reason. you hearing a song or band for the first time. So you need to hear it the same we all herd it back in the day.how it was originally ment to be herd. You buy the album, then you start on side 1. And listen to each song. Because each song sets up the nexr song. And this gives you whole Led Zeppelin experience. Of 4 masterful musicians who can take a song into any direction they wanted. You will greatly appreciate every song. Because you play that record over and over. Then you waited until a new record came out. With each new song you hear becomes your favorite. Then you flip to side 2 and start the experience all over. With the studio version's you fully hear the song how it was ment to be heard. Also you can hear how the band grew tighter and tighter from song to song. You still haven't herd a bad song. Because there are no bad Zeppelin songs. Now each song becomes your new favorite. Then when a new record was released you would play that record over and over. And now you are blown away how different each album was. Going from R&B, Funk,Soul, Reggie, Folk, Blues, Acid Rock, Hard Rock, Mello Rock, Ballads, they did it all. So to fully understand the band and their music. And to get the reaction that we all got. You just need to start at the begging. I love your channel and keep the videos coming. Led Zeppelin, the greatest band to ever grace the stage they were then, they are today, and forever will be tomorrow

Led Zeppelin improvised through their entire live performances, Every concert was unique. I saw then once and they threw in a song that would not appear on an album for two years or be played live for five years. Zeppelin concerts were basically a two to 2½ hour performance but often extended, particularly for those lucky enough to be at the last concert of the tour. We got three hours in Sydney but the longest to be captured on video was just shy of four hours. That was in London. To think Beatles concerts a decade earlier were over in under 30 minutes.

@@billhorstkamp98 Based on the Australian tour in 1972, 2½ hours was the basic setlist. The audience response would extend that with longer songs and extra encores. The Sydney concert used the entire 3 hours permitted by the venue operator. It was outdoors in a venue surrounded by homes and apartments and was a Sunday afternoon (2-5pm) because of the noise issue. Sydney has more suitable venues, indoor and outdoor, now.

Lex, you hit on it. Led Zeppelin were KNOWN for improvising in concert. They never played the songs exactly the same way twice. On that note, as much as I appreciate Stairway live, the studio version is what the legend was made from. Even if you don’t post it you should definitely give it a listen.

You hit it right on target. What made Zeppelin’s live performance so legendary was the fact that they was a true live performance band. Every song totally organic, nothing studio with them. The MSG shows actually consisted of 3 nights of music. Like many of the concerts at location, they was soo huge, 1 night was not enough. Zeppelin was know for playing 3 + hour concerts which included a sit down acoustic songs. They truly gave a concert. That is why they will forever be remembered as the MIGHT LED ZEPPELIN…… Unfortunately, KZread will never capture the true essence of this band…

Let me add an opinion to ponder 💭 The Led Zeppelin performance at London's O2 Arena in December 2007 in honour of Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun, is a reminder that for many years, promoters made all kinds of attempts to get the remaining band members on stage, and no promoter would ever consider any other musical act to play after Led Zep. I will also argue that, no band would want to.

Did you guys not realize that bands sounded different every night? Hey, if the band had a rough day, that can come out in the playing. Same with a great day. Conflict between members can change how things play out. Plus they are all creative people exercising creative ideas, so they can think of some direction to take a solo in, that alters how the other players react. Really good bands are listening to each other really carefully, so that if a guitar solo ventures off into sounding Persian or something, then the drums can go there too. Some nights a song might be four minutes, and on another night, if the solos were rocking and the vocalist is toying with the audience, that four minutes can become twelve. That kind of thing. I hope I helped to make some sense of that.

Great reaction, and Lex is spot on. Led Zeppelin did play their songs a bit different every night. That's what made their live sets exciting. For most songs, the structure was set, but there was room to stretch out, and ad lib. Band leader/producer/guitarist Jimmy Page would be known to stretch out solos, and the skill of the band was so high that they could quickly adapt.

If you want to see Zeppelin in their prime at their first TV performance, see link below. Plant's voice had its full power, Page wasn't yet totally drugged out (and you get to see him use the cello bow on the guitar), Bonham had a smaller drum kit but man did he hit them *hard*, and Jones is locked right in on that bass, as usual: Led Zeppelin - How Many More Times (Live on TV in Denmark, 1969) kzread.info/dash/bejne/qXmE0cmYh8e2dZc.html If you want something a bit more chill, you could try this from the same performance: Zep: Babe I'm gonna Leave You kzread.info/dash/bejne/qYNqxLSjk9y3fps.html I personally love their down and dirty hard rock stuff, but I dig their more folksy and slow bluesy stuff too. Actually, there's not much that Zep did that I don't love. Anyway the whole concert is great, majorly historical (though the stoned out kids watching obviously had no clue) and is a must watch. They also did Communication Breakdown and a great version of Dazed and Confused.

Did you notice the lyrics? It’s a “love song” to his daughter. He sings how she’s more lovely than the ocean, sky, or mountains.

As far as the rhythm pattern on that main riff, the first "straight" half of the riff is 8 8th notes in a row (8/8) more commonly thought of as 4/4, and then the stranger second half of the riff is in 7/8, or seven eighth notes in a row. It gives it that jerky feeling. It's pretty fun to actually count it out and feel what they are doing, it makes it much more accessible and starts you to thinking like a musician. When the riff starts on the downbeat, count to eight and it will work out to be exactly 8 half beats. And then at the same tempo, keep counting as the second half of the rift starts, but this time only count to 7 and then you will hear how on the very next beat it's the downbeat again and the whole thing starts over.

They released the concert from Madison Square Garden in 1973 as a movie and live album called The Song Remains the Same (the movie also had some behind the scenes footage). The Song Remains the Same clearly influenced Christopher Guest to do Spinal Tapp (a movie you should also see if you haven't).

Never got to see the classic Led Zeppelin line up , but did see Page and Plant in Glasgow Scotland in the 90s , with John Bonham's son Jason on drums. Was completely blown away . Genuises and up there with Pink Floyd and The Beatles in a tier of their own in my opinion. Cool reaction

She's crafty by the Beastie Boys is based around the guitar and drum intro. They used quite a lot of Classic Rock samples on Licence To Ill.

when you guys get around to "Heartbreaker" you must also include "Living Loving Maid / She's Just a Woman". it's kind of a part I Part II kinda thing. Radio stations learned the hard way that they must play them together after being flooded with thousands of calls, lol. Anyway "Heartbreaker" inspired many guitar players like Eddie Van Halen for instance and his tapping technique. a truly NASTY riff...

Not playing a song the same way is a sign of good musicianship. The best musicians can improvise with each other. The ones who can't aren't typically good

The live & recorded sound of popular music was definitely rawer & more transparent in the 50's, 60's & 70's....so much better, imo, than the contrived, perfectly appointed, corporate sound of today....
