Bonham's drumming and his contribution to the band cannot be overstated. When Bonham died in 1980, the surviving members just knew that Led Zeppelin would never be the same, so they called it a day and disbanded. Bonzo was the hammer of the gods, and I like to think that whenever I hear thunder, it's just Bonham clearing the dust from his drumming kit. RIP Bonzo.

Yea,, like starting a train. A huge advantage ,that page exploited, and leaned on heavily. And doubt JPJ,was any less valuable. I actually see them as the real band. With page being a much smaller talent than he has always been called. And plant being a singer, who really only pulled off the upper range screams for a VERY short period of time. Ive heard plant sing different versions of every song ,in order to take it easy on his voice.

In the old joke, a man tells a friend that his wife has just gone on vacation. After he asks if it’s Jamaica (“D’yer mak’er”) she’s gone to, the man replies, “No, she went on her own accord.”

I think the lyrics of the song are inspired by that joke, as well as the title of the song. The song imagines a man's reaction to his partner wanting to leave. Also I heard that LZ once said the song was a joke.

@@drServitis absolutely, no doubt! One New Years Eve my best friend did something really stupid & if his mom & sister hadn't heard him crash into his nightstand he would've pulled a John Bonham himself. We'd been out drinking all night & made a last stop @ a house party where these guys were freshman in h.s. when we were seniors & juniors. For some retarded reason, he decided to pour around 8 ounces of rum into a glass & chug it in front of these guys w/o me knowing it. When I dropped him off @ his house, he tried going in & flopping down on his bed, he missed & cracked his head on nightstand & ended up on th floor. His mom & sister had to hold his head up & over a container for him to puke in all morning! I doubt if he'd be around today if his sister was a real, sound sleeper...scary.
The song is done on a Reggae beat and delivery but with Zeps iconic sounds rather than traditional Reggae rhythms. Makes it one of a kind sound. Bonham's drumming on this track is the star.

The name of the song is actually a reference to the reggae sound. I've never heard anyone (even professional radio DJ's) pronounce this song's name properly in the 50 years that it has existed. D'yer Mak'er is a play on the country name "Jamaica" as pronounced by someone with a heavy English accent. (They're English, after all) D'yer Mak'er = Jamaica = Reggae.

The pronunciation is a pun on the name of the island nation of "Jamaica." You pronounce the D'yer like "jer" and the Mak'er like "maker" -- so the correct way to say it is "jer-maker." It's been tripping up rock and roll DJs for 50 years, and I think it's hilarious. Brad, your comment about the "island vibe" is on point. This song was Led Zeppelin's one (and I think only) foray into a song inspired by reggae. They have the song "Fool in the Rain" (I can't recall if you have reacted to that one or not) which is inspired by calypso, and also has a kind of tropical vibe to it.

The bass in this is also a huge driver that I honestly hardly noticed for years. It's SO percussive. The drums are able to be so laid back and heavy because the bass is so driving.
This is the first Zeppelin song I ever heard. I was in 6th grade in early 1974, and my family had just moved back to Southern California after being in Colorado and New Mexico for a few years. During my first class in my new school, the radio was playing this during a break. I had never heard anything like it. I have loved this song ever since.

Bonzo Bonham. Best kick foot in the business. Broke my heart when I heard he died in '80. I was 17 and In Through the Out Door was playing on the radio constantly. I watch these videos now just waiting for that smile to spread across Lex’s face when she’s fully into the groove. I would imagine Brad spends much of his life doing everything he can to get Lex to smile like that as much as he can, and I surely cannot find fault in that. She lights the room up.
many years ago some of my cousins and I were jamming this in our room...had an older aunt pop her head in and comment ' I like that song, reminds me of our sock hops from high school'.... love it
This song received some airplay on the radio. It may have even charted. I never followed the Top 40 back then. The entire "Houses of the Holy" album is great. But it was always in the shadow of the previous release, usually called Led Zeppelin IV and the next, Physical Grafitti. But it is one of my favorite albums. "Over The Hills and Far Away" is another song from this album that received airplay. Great song. If it wasn't for Stairway to Heaven, from Led Zep IV, it might have been recognized more widely for its composition and complexity. Bonham's drums definitely drove this song, though.

My favorite Zepp song. Awesome reaction guys.
We often talk about Bonham's thunder but not his touch, which is on full, glaring display in this gem. Genius.
6:35 you guys compliment each other perfectly. I love it 🤣💪
One of my favorites! Most people will pronounce the title as [Dy-er maker], (close to "dire maker"). But the correct pronunciation is actually just like "Jamaica". I believe some or most native Jamaicans spell the country name: "D'yer Maker". The song combines the sounds of Hard Rock and Raggae so perfectly.
I saw Jason Bonham last night where I live (Long Island). He did all Led Zeppelin songs to honor his father. It was INCREDIBLE!
When Robert Plant pronounces the title of this song it sounds like Jamaica. This is their Reggae joint. See also Boogie With Stu for their response to disco, the Crunge for their tribute to James Brown, Trampled Under Foot for one inspired by Stevie Wonder, The Ocean for their Doo Wop outro, and of course, Kashmir for Moroccan vibes.
"Trampled Underfoot" was a song off of the album Physical Graffiti, that was released as a Single and charted on the Billboard Top 40..
I heard this song was just for fun. They didn’t know this would be a hit. Glad they made it.

I was waiting for this. Btw, it’s pronounced, “jer maker,” as in Jamaica. Because it’s using a ska/rockabilly rhythm style.
Yes, finally! Now check out Fool in the Rain and All of my Love, for more like this one.
I've really been enjoying your channel. Your insights are well articulated and smart. Lex, you have often made remarks about songs that give me a fresh point of view on them even after listening to them for over 40 years. On this one, for instance, what you said about Bonham's drumming being the guitar on this song is right on the money, and I never thought of it before you said it. Also, I had never considered the angle of it being a short term love affair that was ending. Not sure that a short term thing would "hurt me to my soul," but maybe he's a sensitive guy. All the same, it was another remark that made me say, hmmmm.
I would love to hear what your thoughts on "Fool In The Rain"...you guys are like PB&J lol...the two perspectives are beautiful ...love it ☺️

D'yer Mak'er = Jamaica as pronounced with an English accent. Bob Marley was getting big around this time.
This was a very hot tune in my senior year in high school.
1:46 is the moment Lex gets into the feels of the song 💪
You guys pretty much nailed it. It's a reggae-ish song. Island vibes for sure. Very light fare for them and was a big hit.
I was pretty young when I first heard this on the radio and thought, "Wow, never heard nothing like this. Got to find out who this is." A while later I had the same reaction to a song called "Whole Lotta Love." Around that time same reaction to "Immigrant Song." When I found they were all LZ, I was forever hooked and never let anyone claim they aren't the best rock band ever. By the way, the DJ called this song "Dyer Maker (die-er make-er)" like it looks, also like Brad pronounced it I think. Don't let anyone tell you different.
I’ll never forget the first time I heard this song
This song has a definite reggae vibe. The song started as they were having a bit of fun jamming in the studio when drummer John Bonham started playing a beat that had a reggae groove.
When reggae started hitting the interna tional scene in the 70s, many bands decided to try it out. Eric Clapton covered a Bob Marley tune, The Stones had a song called 'Hey Nigrita" and Mick Jagger did a guest solo spot on a song with Peter Tosh. Enjoy.
The song title, D'yer Mak'er, is a play on Jamaica as this was their homage to reggae.
Smooth like butter melting 🫠

I think this is from "houses of the Holy". I used to skip all the other songs and go straight to that one. Then I play all the other beautiful songs. Luv u Lex
