John Paul Jones' bass on this track is simply phenomenal

Love me some Zeppelin. They never go wrong.

Now you're starting to understand the band's inspiration from Tolkien and Lord of the Rings. This has got to be one of my top 3 favorite Led Zeppelin songs. It's got everything to like about the band - Robert Plant's vocals ranging from a whisper to a scream, Bonzo and John Paul Jones in perfect sync and plenty of virtuosity from Jimmy Page. Love watching your reactions to the transitions especially - you must listen like I do, with it turned up to 11! This is another one I'll watch over and over. Thanks Mark!

guitar case is right but that really sounds like the beads of a stick. It’s a little sharp. I could believe it’s his fingers, they were that strong but he’d have to be smacking em or the mic is super close.

The legend i heard was that he was slapping his drum seat and they mic'd it up...one of their best songs, if there can be such a thing.

I’ve been spending too much time following your reactions…I was in a cafe yesterday looking at the menu when I noticed ‘GFO’ written next to some options. When contemplating its meaning I immediately thought ‘Go F*ck Oneself’ instead of ‘Gluten Free Option’ 🤣🤣🤣

Yes mark, they were big fans of lord of the rings. You absolutely need to check out “song remains the same/rain song” live at Madison Square Garden 1973. It has a very big lord of the rings vibe. The performance was part of their movie “The Song Remains The Same” which is a mix of love concert footage and fantasy sequences by each of the band members. It is a must see.

Robert was a HUGE Tolkien fan….as well as an avid student of Welsh, Nordic mythology and The history of the British Isles…and it came through in some of the lyrics that he wrote when in Zeppelin and later in his solo career. The other guys…..not so much.

Led Zeppelin were so special. They could do anything and make magic in any form.

The drummer is John Henry Bohnam...he's died back in Sept 25th 19 80....he was definitely the master of the drums...when he died the band split up.

Great to see newbies enjoy this mega band. I was 12 when I sneaked out of my bedroom window to join the Zeppelin queue at 2pm January 1973. I was in row 3, Edinburgh, Scotland was literally blown away and couldn’t hear anything for 2 weeks. Long live the mighty Zep!

You really do have the best reactions on YT! Yes, he said Mordor and Gollum as well as the 'Evil One', all references from LOTR. As a HUGE Tolkien fan I caught the references on my first listen but couldn't believe what I heard...

You mentioned 'Moby Dick'. The studio version is 'okay', but you really need to see the recorded live version. It was Bonzo's chance to really show off what he could do. The recorded version is about 20 odd minutes long. That was not atypical. He does just about everything that he can think of [ barring using four sticks, as he did on the track of the same name on IV ], and varies the pace , tempo & volume throughout, not just hitting everything as hard & fast as he can. At some point, he will put down the sticks & play the drums with his bare hands. During Moby Dick, the rest of the band would wander off backstage for a drink, smoke or 'whatever'. When Bonzo stopped playing just hands, & picked up his sticks again, a roadie would run back & tell them " sticks"; which was their cue to wander back, although the solo could go on for several more minutes.

Mark, I apologize for a lengthy post but I wanted to set the stage for you. You say that you are on a journey of music discovery so I challenge you to expand this to include a journey of music performance. Obviously this entails live performances. I recently discovered a 10-year old music production (I call it a production as it is way more than just performing a song) that just blew me away. It is such a magical production that it brings me to tears of joy every time I watch it. I think you would really enjoy this journey of music performance discovery that has three legs (some of which you have already experienced). The first leg of this journey involves one of your favorite bands to react to....Led Zeppelin. You can most likely skip this leg as you probably have already heard one of their most ionic songs, Stairway to Heaven. If not, enjoy reacting to that masterpiece. You can skip the second leg of this journey as you have already been introduced Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart when you reacted to their song, Crazy on You. Once you have experienced both Stairway to Heaven and Heart, you are free to experience what I call a masterpiece production. Not only is the performance top notch, but considering the situation, it was magical. Please react to Heart's cover of Stairway to Heaven that was performed during the 2012 Kennedy Center Honors where Led Zeppelin was honored for their lifetime achievements and contributions in the music industry. I can't imagine having to "perform" that song in front of the legends that created it. Talk about nerves. Ann Wilson was 62 at the time and Jason Bonham (son of the late Led Zeppelin drummer, John Bonham) surprised the members of Led Zeppelin by playing the drums for the performance. Make sure you check out the full length version as there is a shortened version floating around. Yes, you will have to use both your eyes and ears. Don't try to determine which is better as they are both top notch. Just enjoy it for what it is. Thanks.

You are correct, the song is A Lord Of The Rings themed thing. You'll hear Morda, Gollum etc. The Ramble On is the walking on the LOTR journey. Robert Plant was into it all at the time having read the book(s)

That "tapping" you hear in the beginning was Bonham playing on a guitar case. Zeppelin II is easily Jonsey's (bassist) best work. A master class in blues rock bass playing. And I know we're not supposed to do this, but the live version of Moby Dick from Earl's Court 1971 is the version to react to.

@@bobshaw8319 I live in southern Stevenage, the Knebworth Concert site is about a 2 mile walk from my home. Little surprise that I got to see both weekends. I even paid to see the first one. I wish Jimmy would quit tinkering about with all of the old master tapes, & putting out remix compilation after compilation, and turn his attention to the videos. At least 2 versions of the concert were released, but neither is currently available

Yes, those references are from Lord of the Rings... Although I don't remember Gollum interacting with any women, but I could be wrong. ;-] The genius drummer's name was John Bonham. Died at 32 in 1980. His son was the guest drummer with the band Heart when they did "Stairway to Heaven" at a show in honor of Led Zeppelin in 2012, at The Kennedy Center. There's a reactor from New Zealand who's also a Drum Teacher called Rooney he'd never heard John Bonham / Led Zeppelin until someone asked him to review on his channel. He rates Bonzo as one of the greatest drummers of all time. Says there's something drummers call "pocket" but there's also "dirty pocket" however I've heard describe Bonzos playing as "filthy pocket"... I assume that's better? 🤣🤣🤣

I've seen a couple of Rooney's reaction/analysis videos. He's absolutely fantastic if you want to be technical about beat. However, if you're not only about beat and rhythm you might find his 'reaction' videos a little bland and over-analytical. He doesn't do usual reaction videos. They are focused entirely or almost entirely on the drummer's performance whilst ignoring other aspects of the compositions. Great if you're a drummer or learning the craft, not so much if you're a non-musician like me who prefers a holistic musical reaction experience.

Plant was reading Tolkien around the time between LedZep II and LedZep IV, at least, and there are several references... It's a real shame about the blocking issues because there's a ton of other great Zep stuff. I highly recommend Achilles Last Stand, if your patience was willing to deal with the fuckery of the industry

robert plant was a huge fan of jrr tolkien and lord of the rings. in stairway to heaven the line all that glitters is gold is a play on the line from lotr all that is gold does not glitter, not all who wander are lost.

Bonzo; one of the most tragic early losses in Rock...and there were a lot...John Paul Jones laying down that ICONIC bass track...underrated no matter how much praise he gets
