In mastering/mixing this song later than when originally recorded, it did get to benefit from improvements to studio production equipment as Jimmy worked on this in his own home studio instead of the regular studio they recorded III in. Bonzo lays down a New Orleans-style bit of shuffle, then add Jonesy's clever bass line with Jimmy's bluegrass flavored twelve-string and Robert's soft, folky vocal telling the tale of Poor Tom who killed his wife for cheating and is sentenced to death. It is one of my favorite Led Zeppelin songs ever - Bonzo's bass drum was fluddering non-stop and Bonzo light single strokes and at the end of each phrase he cracked those two louder accent hits on the snare drum. The hi-hat is being kicked at its own timing as well. To play that same exact beat throughout an entire song is incredible. The beat reminds me of a train rumbling along. Bonzo was incredible and 2nd to none in rock and roll. The drum beat was so badass - it had to be featured on its own for the first few measures of the song. Jimmy playing his jangly 12 string acoustic on it - probably his Gianinni Craviola sounds like a light, but formidable counter to the drums. Jonesy's bass matches the beat at first, but then he gets super melodic as the song moves along and dips into that higher register of the bass. Plants vocals and story telling is 2nd to none. His harmonica playing is perfect when that kicks in and really amps it up as the song picks up.

Baby Come On Home, Traveling Riverside Blues, White Summer and Hey Hey What Can I Do were added as CD bonus tracks starting in the 90’s I believe. This one has Page playing a guitar tuned to a C6 chord. The contrast of that heavy drum shuffle with that odd acoustic guitar riff and JPJ’s bass melody running through. Crazy great musicians.

I love this song, the folk sound is brilliantly done, and the harmonica coming in at the end made it that much better, it most definitely should've been on an earlier album, say No. III
I love how all the layers of sound are complex and can stand on their own, but somehow mesh perfectly into one of the most complex songs that I think I’ve ever heard from them. It’s like they are all lost in their own groove which miraculously melds into a work of art. They are geniuses!
Zeppelin, Purple, Sabbath and Queen were like the Big Four in the 70s. No one could touch those. Top tier and the first cuz they started it all

The Who and Pink Floyd beg to differ
I truly believe your reactions are genuine, you have no idea how happy that makes us to watch these.
I know that you guys aren't surprised by the greatness of LED Zeppelin
Originally from the Led Zeppelin III sessions. You can hear the echoes of the acoustic guitars and reverberated drums from that album.
I'm not a drummer but I can only imagine it's takes alot of strength and energy to play this song, that beat is crazy!
I hear these songs…those beats driving the whole thing…it’s no wonder they couldn’t go on without Bonzo; each of these guys manages to be more than 1/4 of the whole. Good to see you guys digging deep into the music. Rock on!

That drum beat kinda sounded like some New Orleans shuffle…
I love how much you guys are feeling CODA
WOW! First time listening and im ashamed to be a huge fan never heard this sick toon. And I appreciate the Input. ✌
This song is SPECIAL!! One of a kind 👏😊
I've owned and heard every LED Zeppelin album in vinyl and CD format except Coda. This is also my first time listening and so far it's banging

Get the CODA, it was great too!
I always enjoyed this song. It feels like it should have been on Led Zep III.

Yes and Hey Hey What Can I do, instead of Hats Off
I love how much you guys appreciated this one. Always been a hidden gem for me!
Every track is it's own vibe & ride when you listen to Zeppelin. Light or Heavy, Deep and wide are the various tracks on every album they ever produced. Enjoy the ride Lads. It's the best there is.
This song is a leftover from the 1970 recording sessions for “Led Zeppelin III”.
Love this album and so glad that you decided to react to it. :)
Darlene is a truly great song as well.
The thing about Zep is that they were so unpredictable. At the first change in the song, you think the tune might ramp up, but it actually goes down a step with an acoustic accompaniment. I am not a big fan of Coda, but it is always interesting to revisit genius at any level. Zep's throwaways are just as good if not better than what most bands put out as their primary stuff. Great reaction.

Right A Led Zeppelin album listened to is better than one that isn't listened to, for suurrre!
This should have been chosen to be on the third album instead of Hats Off To Roy Harper
Best is yet to come….Darlene (my favorite on the album - flat out blues rocker that transforms to boogie woogie in its second half), Bonzo’s Montreux, Baby Come On Home (great Zep homage to soul), Traveling Riverside Blues and Hey Hey What Can I Do, to name a few.

They already reacted to "Hey Hey What Can I Do" when they listened to Led III.

Thanks. I missed that review. I will check it out. Although I don’t think Hey Hey What Can I Do was on LZ III. Certainly not on my vinyl or original CD. I know it wasn’t on the original CODA vinyl I have either. The original vinyl CODA only had 8 tracks. Baby Come On Home, Traveling Riverside Blues, White Summer and Hey Hey What Can I Do were added as CD bonus tracks starting in the 90’s I believe. I am not aware of what other compilations or bonus tracks on other CD’s where Hey Hey What Can I Do might have appeared.

@@midnightrambler7716 I believe when CDs first arrived, 'Hey Hey' might have been a bonus track for LV III. Either way, the subs told the guys to listen to the track because it was part of the sessions so they did.

Interesting…I have an early 90’s LZIII CD (as well as my 70’s vinyl) but it’s not on either. Maybe later versions.

@@sebastianblack6506According to Wikipedia it’s been included in a few different box sets of CDs as well as the bonus tracks on CODA. Doesn’t look like it ever was on LZ III. Although it was the B side of Immigrant Song (which was from LZ III) single 45 rpm so it was obviously recorded during LZ III sessions or earlier. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hey,_Hey,_What_Can_I_Do
This is my fav from Coda, so cool. But the intro drums then guitar on We Gonna Groove is an ear worm for me, can't forget it for weeks after I hear it.
This is a album of not made songs but this is also an album that's got a nice live track on it and a sound check so it's a special album in its own way
“Darlene” is fantastic!
This is the epitome of the Led Zeppelin sound!
Led Zeppelin baby.
This would be a "Gem" off the Coda album for me.
This made me appreciate this song more than I ever did before, and I’ve been a Zephead since the 80s. That’s why I love this channel.
that beat Bonham is doing is a New Orleans style rhythm
Baffling that this wasn't on a "real" album. love this song
Not many people reacted or heard of the CODA album. Any tracks from this album was barely played on the radio. I always let other Zeppelin fan to listen to this. Imagine, most of these tracks were leftovers from previous albums! I wonder how you would react to the Bonxo track. CODA is such a great compilation album. Wondering if you are going to react the couple of songs that was left off of CODA AND the records? A couple of B-sides and BBC tracks.
Great track. I only recently learned (after 50+ years of Zep fandom) this song is from 1970, and it fits into Zep III's sound.
You guys are a joy to experience this music with. Love you guys!
In retrospect, Coda is an amazing album that aged really well. It really has a lot of innovative songs that they felt they didn’t develop enough to be on the main albums but there are amazing songs. This one has Page playing a guitar tuned to a C6 chord. The contrast of that heavy drum shuffle with that odd acoustic guitar riff and JPJ’s bass melody running through. Crazy great musicians.
Zep and Jimi in the same day! I'm in heaven!

So glad you guys are reacting to Coda. Just goes to show -- again -- how great Zep was, their outtakes and extra songs are still bangers! I always really liked Poor Tom, a unique and atmospheric song.
My old band blue jay shamn played this. 12 string in open c and all. I still dust it off every decade or so it seems. I would have put this and * hey hey what can i do* on three and left off celebration day. Jus' sayin ❤ Great seeing you all react to this lost gem. Grew up with zep in the 70s. Thx for taking me back to hearing it the 1st time. [In late 80s]. That guitar style is country (acoustic) blues. Ala robert johnson or son house. (You folks "folk") 🎉 And yes jpj and bonham propel it.

And the (bass) drum beat!!!😮!!!!
Poor Tom has one badass beat. Wait til you hear Bonzo’s Montreaux
This song was flawless
Ha ha ha told you guys to do this 😊😊 this is their supposed”out takes album” !!! Nothing Zeppelin did was out takes it was all golden 👍👍👍
I thought a rap was going to break out at the end of the review after hearing them spit out some sounds ... keep up the good work. Always informative and always entertaining - a tough act to do.
I dig the New Orleans second line feel of the drums on this one... Always cheery, if if the subject matter isn't. 😊
Your reaction to these nuggets is pure gold... thumbs up always!
Zep created a brand new genre with this song: Funk Folk!
Boham was on some natural speed and Ludwig drums
There is an instrumental version of this song out there at is awesome. Those 3 guys playing the instruments were peerless.
Sounds like a cut that would be on Prince's around the world in a day.this could have dropped in the mid 90s giving Radiohead vibes

A bunch of hidden gems.
"It was 2 on 2." Brilliant, Che!
Always been one of my favorite deep cuts.
I couldn't wait for you guys to listen to this one! Not sure why this one was still unreleased to use on the Coda album.
You said it, it’s the truth! They’re all great
Ha! I effin KNEW that Bonham the Human Metronome would get y'all goin' on this one! And thanks for renewing my appreciation for JPJ's incredible notes here--I sort of had somehow forgotten about that! (I tend to listen to Bonzo and Plant on this one, I think.) And: MIGHT be too late, but I will again recommend that you guys watch the video of the next one, "I can't quit you , baby." From a 1970 sound check, it's the EXACT same audio/version as the album, but you can kill 2 birds--hear the track, see the band. On FIRE!
Darlene, Wearing and Tearing, Walter's Walk
Robert Plant listens to GRETA VAN FLEET and they kinda sound like Zeppelin. Check out "Highway Song" they are the new age Zeppelin.
Knew you were going to enjoy this album
Another band that has the drums ir the guitars "come inx like that and have great musical landscapes is Radiohead. Another band worth taking a deep dive on. They definitely eveloved over the corse of their career.
Biggie was moving to the beat on your shirt 😂

That was a banger ✌️
You guys are awesome!
A nother song that shows that Zep is not just a "hard rock band" and also the "rock" includes ALL kinds of things. On that note, you might find Bob Dylan's song from the mid-60s--"Its Alright, Ma, I'm only Bleeding" very interesting as he is essentially rapping the whole way through (with his own twist of accoustic guitar driving it).
Holy fuck, somehow I forgot about this tune.
What a beat!!! 🙏❤🌹John 🌹❤🙏
This is my favourite song. Open C tuning.
They strick my fav song didnt they? Wearing and Tearing was struck which Page/Plant did live is on youtube already so wont be struck. Kicks!
amazing! sounds like Radiohead but waaay early.. 👌
You guys are the best reactors.
Thats one you can just listen to the isolated drum track, awesome
Great reaction guys 😅 ✌️👍
Killer. Gem.
So in my research I found that this song was from the recording sessions of their 3rd album from 1970 which was mostly acoustic and folk oriented. Too bad they didn't develop this song and put on the album. I'm glad you stopped it. I was able to follow it on the replay.
When the confusion hits......Yep, it's wild. And now, you're really 'bout to get smacked in the face by the next track!!
Yes Sir, the Legendary beats of John Bohnam! If you guys want striaght SICK Drumming ya gotta checkout Zep`s "In My Time of Dying"...
