Even though it's Led Zep, I'm still surprised at how well liked they are by the younger/much younger generation. I mean, Lex can't be more than 25, can she, which means Zeppelin were broken up (about) a decade and a half before Lexx was born.

One of the reasons people love Led Zeppelin so much is because of a reason not a lot of people talk about. It's because of Jimmy Page's (the guitarist) incredible ability to orchestrate properly. That means that when Page composes a song, he makes sure the notes are not in the way of other notes so that every note can be clearly heard. Then, Page's 2nd producing talent is in panning the instruments so incredibly well so that the three instruments sound like a massively loud strong orchestra even though it's only three guys playing instruments and one guy singing. Then, Page would layer chorus and harmony guitar parts over his main guitar notes to produce the incredible Led Zeppelin sound.

This song was recorded after Robert Plant and his wife were nearly killed in a car accident in August 1975 while vacationing in the Greek island of Rhodes. It tells the story of "sandy lands on holiday", and also about their trip beforehand to the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. Plant sustained a shattered ankle and damaged Achilles tendon in the wreck, and had to record this song and album in a wheelchair after he tripped over some cables in the studio while on crutches. In their last two tours, he barely moved onstage from these injuries. The song takes its title from all that drama.

One of the best reactions from this channel, IMO!! Great to see Brad comprehending what they boys were trying to do on this track and noticing the clarity of the each part as it intertwines with the others. Organized chaos is such a great way to describe it. Jimmy Page put down no less than 6 guitar tracks layered on top of each other, while Bonzo just going ham. They took more influence from the East, on this one, as they had travelled to Morocco some months before recording this. Amazing track and reaction, guys. Cheers!

So from what I've read so far, this song isn't really about Achilles, the mythological character, but it's about Robert Plant himself. They saw the Atlas Mountains in Morocco and then Robert had a bad car accident and suffered a broken ankle in Greece. Recuperating in Malibu California Robert and Jimmy Page wrote the song with Robert worried that he wouldn't walk right again.

  • @midkingsteve

It is partially about that but also partially about taxes. (No joke). Robert said when he wrote "it was an April morning when they told us we should go, as I turned to you you smiled, how could we say no?" It was about when their management said if they wanted to avoid the hefty British taxes (close to 50% at that time in their bracket) they needed to establish residence overseas in Europe and maintain residency there forbade certain amount of time. So.. go buy a mansion in Germany or something, and then keep way more of your money. How could they say no? It was actually a very common thing for wealthier Brits to do.

Johnny Ramone had said he got the idea for his downstroke picking style from Page’s Communication Breakdown. Iron Maiden based their sound, lyrical style, and galloping baselines on Achilles Last Stand. If there’s testament to Zeppelin’s genius, it’s their creative versatility which inadvertently created entire sub genres for other bands to run off on.

Brad, listening to you summarize your reaction to this song is just spot on! I felt the same way hearing for the first time back when the album was released in 1975, at the age of 15. It's almost too much to comprehend. Lex, the "finger stuff" was pretty funny but, you nailed it with your comment about imagining each finger having its' own voice. Brilliant! I think you may be a budding hippy!

We are the same age, I did exactly the same thing - listening to this song takes me back to the good old 70's. This was the best decade for music. I can't believe our parents thought our music was crazy. We were like - whatever! We were too stoned to care : )

Brad welcome, you are officially a Led Zeppelin fan. I watched you be hypnotized by this song. You were loving the lyrics while taking a ride on this Led Zeppelin song lol 😂, oh Lex you definitely are a zeppelin groupie, you are spot on about the fingers comments and that’s what Jimmy page does to ya. And just remember this band first broke onto the scene in 1967 so just imagine what it was like for us youngsters way, way,way back then to hear zeppelin music when most of the time we were freaking wasted and totally smoked out. Ohhhhhhhhh what a time to be ALIVE.

You need to check out the following songs: "Dazed and Confused " , "Kashmir" and for Lexi, the "Lemon Song". If you want a great drum solo from Bonzo check out "Moby Dick"....great reaction.
