Honestly, this could possibly be the greatest song ever written-and it never hit the airwaves. Probably because it’s 10 minutes long.

Exactly what I was thinking. This is their highest achievement and that's saying a lot. I can never get Achilles out of my head and I could put it on a loop for hours. One of the many cool things about Zeppelin is that no two performances are the same. When I was a teenager in the late 70s, early 80s, my friends and I would scrounge the record stores in the Village for bootlegs just to hear yet another version of any Zeppelin song..

Very complex arrangement with multiple layered guitars made this virtually impossible for four guys to pull off live, yet somehow they managed to..

Page was once asked why didn't they get a second guitarist on tours. His reply: "Wouldn't look right to the audience"

Page wrote this legendary orchestration of multi-tracked guitar parts and then had the audacity and ability to pull it off...and we were surprised...but we shouldn't have been. I saw the 77 tour and everything was great, but Presence was the highlight and they played all of it...and so much more for 3 and half hours... including acoustic set in the middle...never forget Achilles that night, it's was the highlight for sure.

Four--Robert certainly uses his voice like an instrument, and definitely needs to be counted. But I get what you're saying, and it is astonishing. Most bands couldn't get that kind of sound out of twice as many instruments!
Over 500,000 people altogether attended this two night show! They hadn’t been on stage together in 2 years bc Robert lost his son. John Bonham talked RP into going back to the band and…THIS! If you notice, Bonham barely had to look at his drums, there was something magical between him and his drums. Mind you this was at the end of a 3-4 hour concert and he is this powerful-NO ONE will ever even touch Bonham! Jimmy was channeling something special here too! Even through his addiction he was a master musician-a genius guitar god! Still is to this day. Led Zeppelin Forever 🤘🏻
“ It is not hard to see why drummer John Bonham was irreplaceable when he died one year later.”
This is just bloody UNBELIEVABLE!! At the absolute top of their game.

If you can believe it, this concert at Knebworth was decidedly when Zeppelin was on the downturn. A little over a year later, Bonham was dead and the band broke up. So if this performance was Zeppelin near the end, just imagine how amazing they were in their prime, in the early-mid 1970s.

@@TheLanceUppercut 3 of the 4 1979 shows are as good as any, particularly the Copenhagen gigs. The only subpar night was the 11th of August. They were much worse at the start of the 75 tour and much of 1977 for me.
They were 🔥right up to the end. 1979 was a fine wine . 1980 hit and we lost two heavy's.both named John
The lyrics are something out of a Greek novel from 2000 years ago. And that galloping bass riff ! 🔥
Bonham is fucking that drum kit up... you can kind of see in his face though, that he is less than a year away from drinking a half gallon of vodka and leaving us

Could be. Being able to record anything any time might change how history is made. We know of a handful of greats from the past. I imagine there were plenty of great musicians that were never mentioned by history. Have to look through libraries of published written music and play them, and there will be jewels. And improvisational traveling Gypsy flamenco guitarists blowing peoples minds. Maybe Zep will be taught about in music appreciation in 300 years. I'm leaning towards the Beatles and Bob Dylan being the big guns from our era.
BY FAR the best reaction to this song I have ever seen! PERFECT!! A+++ 😃

His drumming on this track in general, but especially here is completely out of hand - to hold that beat and do all those fills for like 10 mins is insane.

I grew up in 70s. We're the same age. I was completely taken over by music at age 6. Played piano and drums. When I was a teen, I listened to everything. Steely Dan, Allmans, Beatles, Stones, Zep, Johnny Winter etc. I even got into Return To Forever and Stanley Clarke. I still have eclectic taste and on the hunt for music that moves me. TONY it's never too late to get into great music.

Imo the best Led Zeppelin song there is. I want to suggest to you Focus - Hocus Pocus. and specifically the live tv performance. They were told they only had 4,5 minutes to play, instead of the full 6 minutes so they played it a way faster. It features crazy drumriffs, whistling, yodeling, jazz scatting, ...
The original studio version features layer upon layer of guitars overdubbed - it's pretty amazing how Jimmy is able to distill all of that down into one essential guitar part for the live version...

@@draganmladenovic4879 yes he is better known as the 'RIFF MASTER' classic case in point song entitled 'bring it on home' by Led Zeppelin. It's starts off by Robert Plant on the harmonica singing bluesy and then the guitar comes in and it just explodes into a nasty mesmerising guitar riff the greatest in rock and roll history and Jimmy Page at his best 👌
Jimmy would reference his “army of guitars” in the studio, where he could layer 2 or 3 or more guitar tracks on top of each other. I believe the studio version of this song has 6 or 7 guitar overdubs! To attempt to play it live, with one guitar, is brave to say the least… but Jimmy Page is an army of one… and he makes the impossible happen.

That proves why John Bonham dominated the drummer polls back in the 70's. The only one that gave him any competition was none other than Keith Moon of The Who.
Yes, Nebworth. The K is silent. Yeah! You want a good workout, try playing that on drums!! And, this is faster than what they did on the studio version!

They all went back and had tea with mums after this haha
The lyrics were inspired by a trip Jimmy and Robert took to India and the title was inspired by Robert's car accident. He broke his ankle and elbow and was in a wheelchair for a while and uncertain if he'd be able to walk unassisted again. The connection is to mythological Achilles because Achilles had only one weakness; the heel of his foot and an injury there could kill him. The bass line on this song inspired Heart's song Barracuda and I think the machine gun-like sound of the drums inspired Metallica's song One. Out of what I consider Zep's 3 "epic" songs (Stairway and Kashmir are the other 2), this is my favorite.

Led Zeppelin, the truly greatest hard rock, blues rock, folk rock, heavy metal band of all time! It awesome to see you react the way I did when I first heard them in the 70s. Can you imagine getting bombarded with them, Yes, Pink Floyd and all the rest at the same time?
Page at this point had one hell of a heroin addiction. Look at his shirt and hair, he's Sweetin like crazy, more than even Bonham on the drums. I have this Dvd and Page changes his shirt 3 times during show . Towards end of this song just look at how wet his shirt is on the shoulders and the front. Thank god he got clean.
