LED Fog Lights for 2019 2020 2021 Toyota RAV4 and Prime SE - Installation and Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I install an after market set of fog lights in my 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime SE, with LED 3-color bulbs. I think these lights will also fit 2019 and 2020 RAV4's. Watch as I show you step by step how to open, access, and install all the pieces.
*IMPORTANT MODIFICATION*
One of my viewers (Frank Antonopoulos) commented that he noticed that the fog lights would randomly turn on and off if the switch was left in the "ON" position, even when the car power is off. I confirmed this, and I think the ACC wire for this kit was tapped into a power source that's related to some function in the car that turns itself on and off - like the DC-DC Converter, or something in the charging/state of charge monitoring or control systems. So, to prevent this I moved my switched ACC power connection to the fuse that's marked "Washer" which I assume is for the windshield washer fluid pump or the wipers themselves. Either way, any issue with the fog lights should not interfere with any aspect of the car's normal functions with the engine or EV systems. Thanks to Frank for this great catch!

I will monitor these links and update as needed. (Last update: Dec. 2023)
Other Updates
If you would like to order that switch directly from AliExpress that I mentioned in the video, and it has a nicer feel than the one that came with the kit. It's a little tight but once installed, the push button action feels better. Also, the light in the switch was always on with the original, but the new one only lights up when the fog lights are turned on. I don't have any left, but you can buy directly from AliExpress, but it'll take longer now since it would have to come from China. I'll update here if I decide to restock. For now, here's a link to AliExpress:

The LED bulbs were Sealight H11 bulbs but currently not available. Here's an alternate:

There are a lot of different ones available - choose one with the specs that you like (lumen output, color temperature, etc.)

    Glad it was helpful! I did see one video where he pushed the wire out from the inside, but I figured it was much to difficult to then pull on it from the engine side. I saw someone else do it this way and figured it was much easier. Just be sure to not make the hole through the rubber grommet too big, otherwise it might give you a leak of outside air coming in. Not likely but just to be safe...

    I ordered a different set of fog lights than you did, from Ebay and after installing them I had the unfortunate realization that the button wouldn't work. It would work installed in the button slot, but when I put the plastic back in place it seemed to put pressure on it and the button wouldn't work. I ordered other buttons from Amazon, and Ebay but they didn't work as they were wired differently. I ordered the one you have linked here hoping that it would work as it doesn't have the light on it, so it's simpler. And it worked and I have like you also found that it works better than the original switch that came from the kit. It has a decent "click" to it. So thanks for adding your info in the button, it really helped me. : )

    Hi David, Thanks for watching! I hadn't thought about that - but I'd be happy to clarify any part of the wiring that isn't clear. Each different manufacturer will have slightly different wiring instructions - or none at all - or, as was my case, just a diagram that really didn't help much. Most will have at least 1) battery, 2) ground, 3) accessory (switched 12V). My video does show where I tapped into the switched and unswitched 12V, but remember this was in my Prime SE. I don't know if your hybrid LE will have the same layout of fuses and relays in the box.

    @@PhilsDIYThanks for the reply! Yeah that's understandable. My kit seems almost the same as yours. I only have a flimsy black and red lead though (with the relay and switch). How did you identify the correct places to wire it to? Just the diagram or did you have to use a multimeter? I can't find too many tutorials on wiring for hybrids/ev's. ( Sorry, it's my first time wiring something to a fuse panel/junction box like this. I've previously installed light bars, but they went directly to the battery )

  • @PhilsDIY

    @PhilsDIY

    @@inquisitivecoffee Yes, a multimeter is a must. For the battery power, I just deduced that it must be because a) there's a 50A fuse right next to the spot, and it's also next to the large Charging plate that they built in for attaching a battery charger in case your 12V needs a charge. I then checked with the multimeter the voltage on the one free spade terminal with the car power off, and it had 12V so I concluded I could use that. For the switched 12V I looked at all the wiring harnesses and picked a thicker red wire and tested that voltage and found that it was switched off with the power off, and on with the acc or main power on. So I use that. Hope this helps.

    Thank you, Phil. I love the detail in your videos. Just the level I need...! :) Can you tell us how to have flog lights turn off with high beams on a RAV/4 Prime SE...? I suspect most aftermarket installs simply stay on all the time when the switch is turned on? Thanks again...! Bob

  • @PhilsDIY

    @PhilsDIY

    2 жыл бұрын

    Bob- Yes, mine stays on if the switch is on. I think to turn them off if high beams are turned on would take a relay that interrupts the fog light control line. This would take a SPDT relay to be normally closed, and when the high beam line energizes that relay, it goes into the open position so long as the high beam stays on. Once it turns off, the relay goes back to the closed position and fog lights come back on. Relatively simple mod - just need to tap the high beam supply line. Hmmm. I feel another project brewing here... LOL

    Hey Phil, how has the install held up? Great video btw. I didn't even think to source the power from a spade connector. I would've worried about the power draw, but I guess the fuse is there just in case. Someone advised I could use an add-a-fuse and piggy back off an existing fuse but I wasnt sure about sharing a pretty strong amp load with an existing circuit, potentially causing issues with existing circuit's primary intended operation. I know some folks for example mentioned their charging pads seemed to no longer fast charge when they piggybacked off USB fuse. Planning on LED fogs that will pull about 5amp total.

  • @PhilsDIY

    Thanks for watching and your comments! The blank spade terminal that I found in the fuse box was right next to the bar that the manual says to use to connect a charger to "jump" the car (add energy to the 12V battery). Since it was hot with the power off, I figured it's fine to use, and wouldn't create any voltage draw-down issues when in use. I think the reason things don't work right when you try to tap into a wire closer to the end of that circuit, is that the wires they use were selected to be *just enough* for the device at the end of that circuit. No such worry here. Now if they could just figure out a way to swap out halogens with LED's without having to introduce a load to trick the car's computer, we'd all save so much energy on lighting in cars.

As for the warranty, as far as I know, none of the mods that I have installed alters the car's basic system, so I don't believe it would affect warranty. For example this fog light kit is 100% independent of the car's systems and I don't use any of the car's existing wire harnesses. Hopefully I'm right and there won't be any issues!

    Hi Phil, with the wire harness that you tap into for accessory power do you know what it normally controls? My fog light kit only had a red power, and black ground. I did tap into the same red wire in the video. I was working in my garage and noticed the lights came on sporadically, maybe part of a battery cooling fan or something? Do you also notice the lights coming on and off when the car is off? This would assume you left the fog lights switch on before turning the car off.

    Probably not a good idea, since you could accidentally leave the light on when the car is not in Ready mode, killing the battery.

    I guess that depends on what you want to connect there. I don't know what you're trying to do, so I'm not comfortable directing you to a particular connection point. But generally if you're looking to draw more than about 5 amps, you probably should go to the main fuse block either in the engine compartment, or in the trunk next to the 12V battery. Your comment is in the fog light video, and if you're trying to install fog lights, you definitely need to do your wiring in the engine compartment, including using the relay that would have come with the kit.

    I'm pretty sure i did... there's a ground, always on 12V, switched 12V, and the wires that go inside and has the plug for the switch. The video covers all of these. I changed the fuse tap location for the switched 12V, and that's in the description of the video.

    waste of time... at 3:48 you can see two connectors. One grey, one black. Black has 3 Pins for factory fog light connection(it is mean all cables already installed in car system, just install fog lighs, do crossconection and connects to black connector

    The official Toyota LED fog light includes the entire assembly and not just a bulb. Instead of all this, just get a model that includes fog lights and convert to LED.
