Lecture 3: The Structure of the Neocortex

In an overview of the structure of the mammalian neocortex, Dr. Clay Reid explains how the mammalian cortex is organized in a hierarchy, describing the columnar principle and canonical microcircuits. This full-length, undergraduate-level lecture is the third of a 12-part series entitled Coding & Vision 101, produced by the Allen Institute for Brain Science as an educational resource for the community.

It's called neocortex because it's specific to mammals.

Isn’t that the part of the brain that controls animal mutation?

Why is it we can never see the experiences themselves, and just stuff moving around?

This is because actually there are two entities, the experiencer and the experienced. The neurons represent only the latter. They only convey the data pertaining to the objects of the senses and transmit the motor commands. There is therefore another entity, which is by nature conscious, connected to the brain.

We need a video lecture on youtube that covers the entire cycle of the brain of C. Elegans. An hour lecture which covers everything in the loop, from sensation to behavior. 302 neurons should be explained in turn. But wait.. I guess neuroscience can't make such a lecture. Pardon me! As you were!

quick someone make a C. elegans worshipping cult so this incredibly useful activity can briefly become high-status enough for someone to focus on it

Well, a neuron is just like a wire, propagating a signal. Series of neurons are set up in such a way as to act as dominoes with neurotransmitters acting as triggers. These are either excitatory or inhibitory triggers. Excitatory triggers may lead to the generation of what is known as the action potential, an event of electrical nature arising from the "depolarization" of the neuron. The transmission of this action potential along the neuron's axon leads to the dropping of neurotransmitters at the synapse, the point of contact of two neurons. And this goes on and on. This would make the brain similar to a data-communications network, propagating signals (action potentials) across the cable-like neurons which are properly insulated by sheaths of myelin!

Very interesting but Dr. Reid should avoid saying euh euh euh or ah ah ah every seconds LOL.
