The Leclerc AMX-56 is a main battle tank (MBT) built by GIAT, now Nexter of France. It was named in honour of General Philippe Leclerc de Hauteclocque who led the French element of the drive towards Paris while in command of the Free French 2nd Armoured Division (2e DB) in World War II.
The Leclerc is in service with the French Army and the army of the United Arab Emirates. In production since 1991, the Leclerc entered French service in 1992, replacing the AMX 30 as the country's main armoured platform. With production now complete, the French Army has a total of 406 Leclerc and the United Arab Emirates Army has 388.
The Leclerc is equipped with a GIAT (Nexter) CN120-26 120mm smoothbore cannon. This cannon is capable of firing the same NATO standard 120mm rounds as the German Leopard 2 and US M1 Abrams, but in practice only French-produced ammunition is issued. The gun is insulated with a thermal sleeve and has an automatic compressed-air fume extraction system instead of the usual bore evacuator. The Leclerc has a unique autoloading system which was specifically designed for it, and reduces the crew to three by eliminating the human loader. The turret of the Leclerc was designed around the auto-loading system in order to avoid the problems common to other tanks with an autoloader. The Leclerc autoloader allows a rate of fire of 12 shots per minute and holds 22 rounds of ready ammunition; it can accommodate up to six different types of ammunition at once, although like most autoloader systems it cannot change ammunition types once a round has been loaded. The most common types are the armour piercing fin-stabilised discarding sabot (APFSDS) with a tungsten core and the high explosive anti-tank (HEAT) round. There are 18 other rounds available for reload. A Leclerc tank can fire while traveling at a speed of 50 km/h on a target 4,000 metres away. The gun is 52 calibres long instead of the 44 calibres common on most tanks of the Leclerc's generation, giving the rounds a higher muzzle velocity.
The Leclerc is also equipped with a 12.7 mm coaxial machine gun and a remote-controlled 7.62 mm machine gun, whereas most other NATO tanks use 7.62 mm weapons for both their coaxial and top machine gun mounts; the major exception is the American M1 Abrams, which has a 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun and two top-mounted machine guns, one 7.62 mm and one 12.7 mm.
In service since 1992 (after the Persian Gulf War), the Leclerc has mostly seen deployment on low-intensity conflicts, including 15 Leclerc stationed in Kosovo (KFOR) and others in Lebanon (UNIFIL) within UN peace-keeping operations, where their performance was judged satisfactory by French officials.
Until 2010, 13 Leclerc were deployed in the south Lebanon for a peacekeeping mission with UNIFIL.
Hope you enjoy!

For records with Emirate, no loss and several damaged but repaired. The 12.7 coax is is because the AMX 30 has been used a lot against snipers and hidden troops in rumble, it show a very good efficiency that also saves the main gun rounds. The armor is efficient enough to not being shouted by its own gun note there are rings on weels and the large back is a dissipator for heat, the tank is a lot stealth in thermal and infra red. On opposite of the Abrams witch has a huge thermal signature. Another interesting feature, the tank is linked to a command center and arty automatically, when the tank spot a target the arty has immediately the position and can fire. Also is integrated a chemical analyser in case of chemical warfare.

IndustrialDonut Kind yes,, you see, the aim for the Soviet´s wen designing the T-64 auto-loader was to reduce the need for a loader ad to reduce the tank profile so the entire tank was built around the auto-loading system, these added many disavantages to the T-64 and the upgraded T-72 including sealing the turret from the rest of the tank mainly from the driver, the crew had litle to no acess the the turret

To my opinion it's the most interesting tank currently in use...so...thanks for making a video about it ! Two cool things to also note about the Leclerc: 1.) The part of the turret where the gun is is higher to allow full gun depression. While the part with the crew is lower to present a smaller target and reduce the amount of armor needed. 2.) The gun doesn't have a bore evacuator instead the fumes are pushed out of the tank by a compressor.

@Matsimus: if you're impressed by the 12.7mm co-axial machine gun of the Leclerc just know that it's a downgrade from the AMX-30. AMX-30 used to have 20mm co-axial gun.

  • @davidbocquelet-dbodesign

Because the 20 mm was not very useful as the rounds took a HELL of space inside, significantlyreducing the allocation of 105 mm gun rounds. With a great elevation it could be used on paper against AT helicopters (or in an urban theater*); But that was too much of a tradeoff. *better to NOT use a tank inside a dense urban area, it's a RPG fest, especially on the less well protected roof and engine deck.

  • @monfortnicolas5448

    @monfortnicolas5448

@@davidbocquelet-dbodesign yes it took a lot of space, especially in a tank as smal as the AMX 30, anyways, the ergonomics in the AMX 30 was surprisingly good and that 20 mm gun was certainly a big asset against both infantry and lightly armored vehicle at considerable range, which is something a 12.7 mm let alone a 7.7 mm is definitely not. I think the coaxial 20 mm or mostly, remote controled and stabilized 20 mm autocanon will come back with the next generation of tanks.

@@cleanerben9636 Well the MGCS will end up bigger and heavier than what we currently have. Estimated weight of the final product is between 70 and 80 tons, it'll have an unmanned turret housing a 130mm gun (and will probably be able to house guns up to 150 mm to remain relevant up to 2060-2070) but the latter will certainly be armored, same goes for the hull and wil be a tank sporting a very high quantity of electronics and this can weight tons.

The French have a different concept of armoured warfare, and I think it stems back to good old WW II. French tanks in that war were easily the heaviest and biggest in Europe, some weighing in at over 40 tonnes (in 1938!!). But way too slow and cumbersome compared to German Mk IIIs and IVs. In reaction post-war, they went totally for mobility and have never changed since. The French have tried twice to co-operate with the Germans on the Leopard 1 and 2 but in each case, the German's concept was too heavy at that time (Leo 1 42 tonnes and Leo 2 62 tonnes). Not the only reason for pulling out (guns, engines, suspension systems and sights are other factors), but the French will always tend toward a weight lighter than acceptable to any potential partner in NATO. The just want speed and are prepared to sacrifice armour to get it.

Had a friend that was a Gunner on AMX30B2, when they got the Leclerc, it was catastrophic : more than half of the vehicules were not in working order, the gun stabilizating system never worked on the specific tank my friend was a gunner, and he had to manualy stabilize it everytime. The autoloader was also very often not working, so to be always ready, they had to always carry another crew member as a backup loader, in the very cramped turred because of the autoloader, in case of this one would decide "screw you guys, I'm not loading your shit". The driver was apparently very pleased by it performances... When he managed to start the tank... Overall the introduction of this tank was pretty bad, but I heard that they fixed a lot of its issues over the past few years. But still... If you want to watch about about a french vehicule that's loved by all french tank crews, look at the AMX10RC, wich is a wheeled tank destroyer. And this thing is like a swiss knife. It can fight in every environnement, it's amphibious (although my friend said that during their training on 10RC "they gave us an old tin can from the Gulf War that was leaking, witch made some pretty tense moment on the lake we were training on.") and really effective. Can recall of the story of a 10RC crew, climbing a mountain at night, in Afghanistan, to rain some shells on talibans that had mortars firing on a french FOB, wich was recalled by an american soldier working with the french, Chris Hernandez : "One giant advantage the French had over us was with their use of tanks. We maintain an armored force that’s fantastic at defeating T-80s crossing the Fulda Gap, not quite so fantastic at fighting insurgents in mountainous valleys. The French had AMX-10s, light wheeled tanks that were perfect for counterinsurgency combat. They were a tremendous force multiplier. One night before a major operation, I was laid out in the dirt on an outpost perimeter. I had fallen asleep at midnight. At 3 a.m. a tremendous explosion woke me. I lay still for a few moments, then asked a Marine on guard, “What the hell was that?” He answered, “I don’t know, but something went right over our heads.” When the sun rose, I was stunned to see an AMX-10 halfway up a mountain behind the outpost. A brave and/or stupid tank crew had rolled up a narrow trail in the dark, and hit some Taliban. I didn’t envy the poor driver who had to negotiate that trail. Or the loader who I’m sure had to walk ahead of the tank, knowing that if he made a mistake his crew was rolling down the mountain. As a former tanker, I can tell you that driving a tank up a mountain in the dark isn’t something cowards do." So there we go, hope the infos are to your liking, keep the good work ;)

Bit late to say this. But as a Brit I do make jokes about France and her military. But that is because I actually respect the martial prowess of the French and your history of victories. France has a very high victory record count overall in it's history. Held the line in WW1 and was the biggest fighter on the western front. WW2 fought well the fall of France was not due to lack of fighting spirit. The free French's actions speak for themselves. And well those Exocet missiles used by Argentina has to make a Brit respect France's missiles. People underestimate France but forget that She is one of the few NATO nations who has her own multirole fighter home built (Mirage) and not in coalition (Typhoon) or USA created (F-15, F-16, F-35).

Savage Historian wrong. The french army is displayed as following thru 4 arms : army, navy, air force, and the gendarmerie ( basically PM who act as policeman in the countryside of France, from which the GIGN emerge ). The Legion is interesting only in the way they recruit their member. They allows anyone, what ever the nationality and the reason they wanna join, even criminal ( as long as no blood crime ) into their rank, and basically erase their identity. Other then that, it’s a good fighting force, but nothing amazing. The french special forces ( which the Legion absolutely isn’t a part of, I’ve heard this bs so many times ) are amongst the best in the world. Check out the 1er RPIMa, the CPA10, the 13ème RDP, and the FORFUSCO. Those men and women represent the might of the french army, and are recognized amongst the special force community. They’ve pulled out some incredible operations, are extremely skilled and experienced, and have some of the best training and equipment available.

Great video as always, Matsimus! I love your real vehicle overviews. Not to belittle your gaming content, but theres just no other source for juicy info on real vehicles on YT. The leclerc is definitely a sexy vehicle, and it looks like the french's insistence on experimenting with autoloaders and fast, lightly armored MBT's has yielded a very capable vehicle that is nevertheless above the average on maneuvrability and speed. BTW, I hate to ask for specific content, but have you considered doing an overview on the JSDF type 1 0 MBT? There's little to no content on it in english, and it seems like an interesting vehicle taking similar design choices to the Leclerc.

It has 14 gears. 13 go in reverse and one goes forward in case the enemy attack from behind.

But in all seriousness, the French are not pushovers. The Leclerc is a great tank, with a very serious army behind it.

The French names for the Leclere are really funny for example they have one named after one of the worst French defeats in history at Dien Bien Fu in what was French Indochina

firstable Philippe Leclerc de Hauteclocque is most known for the tunisia campaign against nazi and his most brillant victory Ksar Ghilane, Gabes, kairouane and tunis battle and then in patton army... secondly he won all his battle in first indochina revolution. he died in 1947 so fare before the real indochine war. so please have a little before claim something realy stupide. And AMX Leclerc is really inspire from him and his strategy light, speed and strike fast. a sort of genral Lee or Davout marshall...
