Leaving your AQUARIUM when on VACATION

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Leaving your aquariums and fish tanks can be stressful when you are away from home on vacation. Feeding your fish while on vacation is often a concern of many people with an aquarium.

    I have three aquariums, 2 are shrimp tanks and one is full of Endlers, I agree that leaving for a few days is totally fine without feeding and some might even argue it is good for them. I just recently left them all alone for a week, while I was a bit nervous I came back and they were totally fine. I wouldn't go without feeding them for over a week though.

    A nice video again about fish and advise!!You are very good at that!!I didn't have the chance for vacation the last 5 years but all the previous years I was away for 2 weeks at Summer.I made the water changes check the water parameters and put on the auto-feeders but had some issues.At my 65 gallon tank I always had water chiller but for my smaller tanks I bought the last just the last 2 years some fans to keep down the temperature...so the temperature was up cause the house was closed with no air-condition on!!I was feeling worried of what would happen to my fish due to the heat!!Had some fish died and the water was yellow and smelly one summer...I also always was worried if they had a disease and and I couldn't treat it.One summer I got back from vacation and some days after I went with a friend to a beer festival far from my house and my mother called cause she saw leak in a 30 gallon tank I had back then.The leak was down at the right corner at the joint of the glasses!!!I got back and had to remove the fish to a smaller tank that was empty...my mother was with a mop and backet and the water was 1/3 gone!!Imagine what could happen be if we all were out from the house for many days!!A great disaster not only for my fish but for my house with 30 gallons of water spilled everywhere!!!The tank was running for 2 years and a half...and it was a "good" and expensive one!!

    Short periods, primarily just some fish aggression. Do tank maintenance at least a few days if not a week before you go away. This way you can observe closely for problems that can sometimes happen with maintenance.

    my tanks are pretty low stocked and are species only for the most part. i feed a little heavier before I go and make sure my ATO reservoirs are filled up. i haven't had issues with being out of town for a week and not feeding them during that time. i dont typically do water changes as my nitrogens are never detectable when i test.

  • @essef.

    @essef.

    I have heard that waxing them and dropping their temperature 5 degrees helps with breeding. A box with a light blue inside is a must to keep them comfortable but do not have any fan stronger than a foam rotor handheld or they will stress. When stressed they nip their blades and box surf; some have been known not to return on their next outing. Good luck!

If I leave for longer than a week, then I'll have to work on dumbing down what I thought was a fool proof system. A week or less, I don't have anyone attempt to feed them.

    I could be wrong but healthy fish should have no problem going 4 to 5 days without food I'm sure in the wild they go this long or longer without food and survive but it's best to feed younger fish daily or small amounts twice a day and adults at least every other day or once a day some times l mix it up and they fast once or twice a week for 48 hours before being fed because l think it's good for them once in a while they all seem active and healthy don't over feed it's not good for them because you pollute the water and it only does more harm than good 25 percent weekly water changes also helps keep them healthy and tank looking clear with monthly gravel vacuuming and monthly filter cleaning I've found cleaning my filters more than monthly only depletes the good bacteria as with doing gravel vacuuming more than monthly but it gets 25 percent water change weekly seems to be working best for me with a 75 gallon tank with 4 3 inch African cichlids 2 pictus catfish 4 inches and 21 exodon paradoxus with 10 of them 3 inches or slightly more the others 2 - 2.5 inches

    Installing a new auto feeder then leaving is a very big risk on balance. It may over feed and foul the tank. Unless you've had one dialled-in on a particular tank and trust it, it's probably risking more harm than good for a short trip.
