No matter what, Hotline Miami's core message stabs you with just as much force as any of the protagonists: Violence begets violence begets violence. If only one person had broken the cycle, there might still be a Miami today.

I don't think so. Because regardless of what the characters would do, there was nothing stopping the US and USSR from keep raging a nuclear war that would inevitably end this way. Sure, they could let go of their pride and selfish goals, but the moment Soviets stepped on Hawaiian soil, it was all over. Regardless of what would happen with the characters, the Russian-American coalition and the 50 Blessings would keep further exacerbating the tension between the two superpowers into this. This is also one of the main themes of the game as well, nothing you do matters in the grand scale of things. Just like Richard said in the first game: ''You'll never see the whole picture, and it's all your fault.''

It's such an amazing and well executed concept where the intense, action heavy gameplay gets you all high on endorphins and makes you feel like a god, but then story-wise each chapter takes a turn for the worst and ends with some horrible shit happening that just makes you crash from that high into the lowest of the lows, feeling terrible about what you've witnessed and almost guilty about what you did while in control of the characters. Just goes to show that people who made this game knew their shit, it's surprisingly effective at making us feel something for a bunch of fictional characters despite us indiscriminately murdering similar ones just seconds before and feeling great about it

Laughing having a good time. They go down the hallway. Then I hear an explosion. Followed by a few seconds of silence. Then the wall of fire begins coming down my hallway consuming everything incredibly fast, but also very slowly. I sit there knowing there is nothing I can do as I watch the flames get closer and eventually consumes me. I sit in the flames burning for a few seconds before waking up.

Looks like you've gotten yourself quite comfortable over here. You know what they say about good times, don't you? Yeah. Good times never last. That's right. Soon this will all be over. I had a feeling things would catch up with me. Are they onto me? Oh, no. This... This is much worse. How long do I have? You? You don't have much time. No one does. There's nothing I can do about it, right? No. By now there's nothing anyone can do about it. Okay. No need to fight it then. I'm glad you understand. *Leaving this world is not as scary as it sounds...*

I think this is the game with the most sour ending i ever played, it leaves you with the feeling that all you did was for nothing, was there even a point of it all? Because it doesnt look like it, evans book doesnt mattered, the recognition Pardo wantrd never mattered, nothig we did was of use, and if it mattered it was for the worse, never for the better, all of the characters basically helped all of this go down quicker, no one learned a thing, and its everyone's fault for not stop running until hitting a wall with their face. The most sour, depresive, violent game i've ever played, and its a masterpiece

It feels like such a missed opportunity to me that Gunship's song "Technoir" released a couple months after Hotline Miami 2 considering its lyrics tell the story of the game and the beats style fits the game perfectly

Do not mourn, my mother, dear, Every pang will soon be o'er; For I hear the angel band Calling from their starry shore; Now I see their banners wave In the light of perfect day, though 'tis hard to part with you, Yet I would not wish to stay. For the dear old Flag I die, Mother, dry your weeping eye; For the honor of our land And the dear old Flag I die. Farewell mother, Death's cold hand Weighs upon my spirit now, And I feel his blighting breath Fan my pallid cheek and brow. Closer! closer! to your heart, Let me feel that you are by, While my sight is growing dim, For the dear old Flag I die. For the dear old Flag I die, Mother, dry your weeping eye; For the honor of our land And the dear old Flag I die.
