I don’t think the natural hair community is dying out, it’s just evolving. New things get old and old mindsets MUST evolve. So as we learn how to treat our natural hair with a variety of styles in moderation the stringent standards become more liberal. Natural hair and the community is and will always be a beautiful thing for me. I just had to learn what works for my hair long term may require stepping out of the box every now and again. Love your content, keep up the good work, you have come a loooong way Love. And I’m enjoying your revolution. Stay blessed 😇

I don't think it matters if the natural hair community is dying because those who truly love natural hair and enjoy the experience of sharing it with others are going to do it regardless. Natural hair is not a trend to me, it's a way of life. So the people who jump on when it's trendy and then jump off when it's not, it's not a good look. I will continue to support the "non-toxic" natural hair community 💕💕💕 And yes, I also feel as if I am extremely tired of the toxic atmosphere, BUT I'm not tired of my hair! I'M SO TURNED OFF BY TOXIC PEOPLE IN THESE KZread streets DRAGGING NATURAL HAIR.🙄🙄🙄 You don't have to wear your hair natural but you also don't have to drag people and be rude when it comes to your opinion. Putting in a protective Style while you're on vacation is understandable but I rock my wash and go all year long. The humidity really doesn't bother me because I know what to use to somewhat shield my hair from the elements and humidity. I'm not saying it's foolproof but everyone has their tricks. Also I'm the type of person that loves big hair so the humidity doesn't really bother me. Washing my hair once a week is not a lot of work for me. I've worn weaves, wigs, braids, crochet braids and other " protective styles" and I enjoyed them at the time. Like I said, there's nothing wrong with them as long as you don't leave them in your hair forever...cuz some people do that, LOL Also, I feel like when the natural hair community became mostly about money and monetization, things drastically changed. Some cases it became an issue of if you're not paying me then I'm not promoting your product. And that's perfectly fine because everyone has a right to run their platform the way they see fit. That's all for now 💙

I love my natural hair. I stopped relaxing in 2012, and no heat since December 2019. I'll never go back, my hair is super healthy...AND LONG. I've turned 60 and I have a super full head of hair. My only issue is that my crown has begun to thin a bit due to heredity, age and menopause. When I want a straight look or don't have time, I'll throw on a realistic wig for a day. And for vacation, a good old crochet works great. Otherwise, I will stay natural.

I think the natural hair community is not the same as 5 years ago. Videos use to teach us to embrace and care for our natural hair. The movement served a great purpose - - we have learned how to care for and luv our hair. Today, women on mainstream TV rock their natural hair....either straight or curly. The community has evolved, yet served a significant purpose (in my opinion). BTW, I luv your no foundation look!!

The constant striving for waist length hair (um who has time to detangle that……) and manipulating your curls into a different shape (but shaming people who dare to straighten their hair) gags me. Thanks to your colorwow review I’ve been able to wear my hair straight and I am LOVING IT. Hell I might keep it like this all summer. Thank you for giving us helpful content along with lifestyle. I feel like the natural hair community is dying out in a way. I think in the past people felt so restricted with their hair and now we’re just doing what makes us happy with our hair. I used to have so many rules with my hair (Can’t use heat, wash day routines, can’t do certain hairstyles because it’s not “healthy”) I just feel so free with my hair now and I got tired of being obsessed with hair that grows on my head.

I started watching over 15 years ago and creators were doing lives on the regular, and making daily videos...Most of those ppl are gone now. I don't believe the idea of natural hair is dying. I think it has become the norm so people aren't as starved for natural hair content. I personally wear my natural hair year around because I've learned that protective styles have done more harm than good for my scalp. I also believe that there has been a shift in a good way with people embracing what naturally grows out of their scalp. I think some of the negativity may come from seeing black women come so far with embracing what is naturally us just to see people go back to those same habits. With any movement you will notice it moves from one extreme to the other before settling. Black women will hopefully become less critical of each other, and embrace the choices that we make as individuals without feeling attacked as a community.

The natural hair community was fun with all the experimentation of hairstyles and products and it felt like we were all kinda doing the same thing. Being natural for 10 years I feel as though I am missing out on doing fun things for the sake of keeping long hair(which is my preference). We are taught that basically anything is going to break all your hair off no matter what and that box is very limiting. I’ve bleached my hair almost white and it didn’t hurt me 😂

Natural hair videos are my therapy. When I’m having a bad day or am stressed at work, that’s what I like to do to ease my stress. I do feel like things have died down but that might be simply because the influencers that I started out watching don’t make videos anymore. As to the question “Are you tired of your hair?” I’m somewhat frustrated with mine because it has changed since I hit a certain age and my hormones have shifted. (And some crazy person wanted to argue with me on FB that your hair texture/pattern can’t change) 😒 But, yeah… frustrated but not necessarily ready to relax or loc. As far as the community… I do wish it was like when I started in 2012, but…I still love watching.

I am worn out with my natural hair. It is sooo time consuming. A lot of the time, I find myself wearing a silk lined cap. Because, either my hair didn't turn out well, or I got tired and didn't finish doing my hair. ie. detangling, shampoo, deep condition, detangle again. Twist, dry, take down, style. OMG, HELP! Some time I say the hell with it. I'm leaving these twist in and putting on a cap. As far as the natural hair community. There is so many rules, so many contradictions, toxicity and yes prejudice and hair envy. I personally am tired of it all. I'm thinking about getting some wigs. I noticed that there is a lot more embracing of one's texture as is in certain ways (not always using edge control to slick them baby hairs, not always feeling the need to stretch out the curls and embracing shrinkage and even frizz, being realistic thet maybe natural hair maintenance is simply not in the cards for you). As a small natural hair KZreadr, I haven’t experienced much of the toxicity from the natural hair community. I do agree that people do have A LOT of opinions on how someone else’s natural hair should be or what’s your hair type, porosity, etc. It can be very frustrating when someone insists on telling you what to do with your own hair. I just try to remember to stay true to myself, spread positivity, and do what works for my own hair. I love your natural hair videos btw! I agree the natural hair community is not the same, because some ppl believe they have to strictly listen to what someone else tells them. & creating content is definitely repetitive for the natural hair community, but I think viewers who just simply enjoy you, will still watch! I still appreciate videos on how to do different hairstyles etc don’t necessarily care for length or hair type etc but just have fun with it. We focus so much on what “healthy hair” is like or “hair type” etc I think that’s what made it tiring or burnt out.. there was no fun in it and natural hair just became this chore we’re trying to “perfect”. Here for all the new content you bring and I won’t be mad at all for hair content every once in awhile for example, like doing something fun with it whether it’s a styling video or like how the boho braids on natural hair is trending.

Yes I get sick of doing my hair especially with this humidity it’s been going up a lot more. However I did my big chop over a year and a half ago and since then I’ve been heat and chemical free. I've just started doing vlogs mainly because as you said it (insert niche here) becomes repetitive over time. I am seeing a dip when I upload lifestyle content but I know this is the way of the future. In terms of the natural hair community, I think the OGs are moving on and there really aren't many creators filling that gap. I still love the natural hair community. I still make a good amount of diy products and when I go to the store and see how many products they have for curly coily hair, I'm amazed. A decade ago when I went natural there was like 3 or 4 products for us and none were really all that great. Watching all these shows and movies for kids with young black girls with natural hair. Seeing more naturalists in my city to the point where it's not as "special" as it used to be. I used to harassed and all sorts of comments about my natural hair and now it's all love and support and honestly a lot of the time there is nothing to say at all because soooo many of us are natural. For the MOST part, to me, the goal of the natural hair movement as succeeded. We got naturals on tv, social media, real life. We got products. We all learned HOW to CARE for our hair. When we first started this, THOUSANDS of women have NEVER even SEEEN their natu a l hair. We got natural hair in business and corporate life. By no means are any of these places perfect but we did the damn thing. I still love watching natural hair videos, tutorials, and I still learn new things all the time! I am still obsessed with my hair and have been for 10 years. For me I don't think it'll ever change. It's a passion. My hair journey started a lot of other routines and health journeys in my life. But by no means is hair a passion for everyone. I think the community is just evolving. I think you tubers seem stressed and over the community. But I just don't see that in my real life at all.

I am natural and I do my hair almost every week. I spent a lot of time and money going to the beauty shop every week to get my hair done when I was getting perms. Then when I went natural straight, I again spent a lot of time and money getting my hair done weekly at the beauty shop. I am now natural curly. It takes me about 1 1/2 hours to do my hair. I will never knock those who get relaxers or go to the beauty shop because we all deserve to be happy. People should do what works for them. There is no right or wrong. The natural hair community will continue to evolve and people may go back and forth. I even straighten my hair once or twice a year.

I love the natural hair community. I’ve been trying to be natural since a very young age because I didn’t like relaxers and because I just wanted freedom with my hair and to let it be. Then I went back to relaxers because I saw a celebrity wear a sleek hairstyle and I was trying to make my hair like that even though they probably just did a silk press. And I just love being natural in general. I don’t always wear my natural hair out though, I love wearing hair extensions and slaying wigs. However, I’m trying to do moisture training because I really love the curl pattern of 4C hair when it’s moisture trained. It’s like a cute little tiny curl pattern that I just want to see in a long version in my head. I don’t know, I used to see people in my high school wear their curly hair some days and it was so big like an Afro that it inspired me to keep up with my natural hair even more. Although most of the time my hair is in protective styling with wigs, I do love seeing my cornrows and my natural hair and the shine it has and everything. Our hair is really shiny because of the texture it has, and that’s why when people relaxed hair, you see so much shine. I plan on keeping my hair natural and wearing cornrows as a protective style as well as wigs. All of the damage that I do with heat can be on the wig, but not on my real hair. I want my real hair to be healthy and flourishing and I wear it on special occasions occasional once or twice a year silk presses but the rest of the time in my cute little curls. I even like to wear it undefined sometimes because our hair is beautiful and when it’s soft we can enjoy it more.

I don't know about the natural hair community but I personally only watched videos that were related to what I wanted more info on when it came to my natural hair. If anything was mentioned that I didn't care about like my curl type or length I would completely disregard it and stay focused on what I searched for. I learned quite a bit by watching what I needed to watch and ignoring what I needed to ignore. I don't buy super expensive hair products to take care of my hair regardless of how much people try to convince me to. My hair doesn't need that. I've also had my hair relaxed and it was still a lot to deal with. I know now that I love my hair natural rather than relaxed. You just have to do what makes you happy with your hair. Focus on the goals you're trying to reach with it and disregard anything that is mentioned that that has nothing to do with those goals. It's YOUR hair natural or not.

I love and miss your natural hair content. So, I'll still look for natural hair content wherever I can find it. No. I wouldn't jump to bash the whole community. Otherwise, aren't we doing exactly what we're accusing them of by creating division and negativity? I've seen a lot of You Tubers lately saying they're moving away from natural hair content and they're tired of natural hair. Now, they're into lifestyle and fragrances, etc. If anything, You Tube seems to be a bandwagon community. Whatever is trending that's what you see everybody doing, including themes, intros, backgrounds, lighting, content, subscriber travel/trips, etc. But, just like natural hair content the latest trend will fade eventually like all other trends. For me, natural hair and self-care aren't trends. It's my lifestyle. I have been natural since 2011 and I will never, ever go back. I've stuck with it even though I struggled a lot for the first few years. I had no idea how to care for and style my natural hair and kept getting silk presses and wearing it in buns and ponytails. It was the You Tube natural hair community that set me straight. So, I owe a lot them. I appreciate them taking the time and money I didn't have to try and demonstrate different products. I learned so much by watching tutorials and hearing about porosity and the types of products that work best for my hair type. YES, we have hair types! I wish people would stop making that a negative thing. It's not. It's a fact and reality that we have to accept to be able to properly care for our own hair. All products don't work for all hair types...and that's on PERIOD.. I think it's a cop out to just throw the whole natural hair community away because some people have grown tired of their natural hair or they can no longer get the clicks and likes they once got. Taking care of my natural hair is a blessing and a major aspect of my self-care. I always feel so good and accomplished when I've finished my routine and my hair is fresh, clean and moisturized. I care about my natural hair as much as I care about my skin, nails and how I treat my body inside and out. Thankfully, there are still some very positive and committed naturalistas to follow and who won't give up just because they can't get brand deals and sponsorships. I will continue to follow and support them. You can find toxicity anywhere and in any community. But if you seek out positivity you'll find that, too!

The only thing that is “dying out” is the restrictive set of rules that the natural hair community has made over the years. People are now learning how to love and care for their hair without following rules. This is why I always emphasize do what works for YOU. Listen to your hair! Just because someone says for example “you have low porosity hair stay away from heavy products” there can be many low porosity naturals that actually NEED heavier products because their strands are coarse and need something heavier. Again, do what works for you. People will always have their opinion whether negative or positive, but you shouldn’t let that affect the way you feel about and care for your hair. Do what makes YOU happy with your hair regardless of what people are saying or will say - it’s not about pleasing others or making others feel confortable it’s about what makes YOU happy. What makes YOU comfortable.

I see the problem is natural hair (curly or straight) vs non-natural (relaxer) to grow waist length hair instead of HEALTHY HAIR. I’m Natural (no relaxer) but I put in color to cover my grey. I wear my hair however I feel like, twist out, straight, silk press, protective style (mostly ponytail or bun), headband wigs, and braids (only 3 times I can’t leave them in over 3wks). My hair is healthy, below my bra strap. To be fair my hair is “3, A-C”. medium porosity and I have been taking care of my hair at home since I was 12yrs old when I got my relaxer(57 now). I’ve been natural 12yrs now. There is a difference with the products you use on relaxed hair vs natural hair. People will always need to know how to have HEALTHY HAIR, no matter natural or relaxed.

Tips on refreshing your protective style 1. Mousse and wrap it up overnight 2. I know it's hot, but maybe start using grease to keep your scalp moisturized longer (something that controls flaking/dandruff) 3. Using oils for the length of the braids (keep them looking shiny and smooth) 4. Doing more up-do styles so the fly-aways aren't as visible (be more versatile instead of just keeping them down all the time) 5. Protective style refresher sprays Hope these tips help sissy. Yup mousse is a game changer for braids! I use gel and set it with mousse and had no issues with hair balling up or knots. But before I take out my braids I spray water on the roots and apply oil overnight before taking it out the next day to loosen any buildup. I also use the African Pride detangler/pre-poo when taking it out for each section.

I honestly feel like the relaxer users aren't as dependent on the product as much as they use to be. Now do I feel the topic of "Natural hair" is not as deep as it was maybe about 5 year's ago, so no. We live in a "Do You" world, so trend's and "Communities" do die out after ppl become more accustomed to doing what's best for them.. I do feel you though.

My scalp gets very oily, and I sweat a lot, so I don’t like washing my hair more often, but it’ll all be over soon lol! I have dwindled away from posting/commenting because there’s not much of a market for men, and the new push for just sticking with a professional, wash n gos, and more has a lot of people unlearning a lot of things that have been ineffective to our hair! I agree with many other commentators who said that the natural hair community is evolving, which is expected. There truly is nothing new under the son, and cranking out the same content is repetitive and creators are getting tired of sacrificing the health of their hair by constantly styling it for videos. One thing I believe has been the detriment of the natural hair community is monetization. I remember when I first started watching natural hair videos. The videos were from women trying to figure out their hair and sharing what they learned. But now it’s so commercial. Competing for views, subscribers and sponsorships. Making it a business more than a community. Creators hawking products that they don’t even use or promoting wigs from disreputable companies. It’s hard to tell who or what is genuine. Pursue what ever type of content interests you. Stay true to yourself and that will shine through.

I think you make an excellent point that there is definitely a difference between us being tired of our natural hair vs. us being tired of the natural hair community. I do think a lot of the girls right now just need a break and you make another great point about the seasons. But, I don't think there are as many girls tired of their natural hair as there are those who are tired of the "community". In my opinion I think permanent "dying down" of the community is for a few reasons. 1) We have finally figured out what works for us and what to do with our hair. Like you said, you started in the game 5 yrs ago, I started my journey 4 yrs ago. Back then, a lot of us were transitioning and we knew we wanted better for our hair but had no clue what to do. So, we flocked to KZread University and the all the hair blogs taking advice from everybody and they mama just trying to figure this thing out. So, there was a huge increase in the community because there was a need for information. 2) We got tired of product overload and these brands doing a "cash grab". I think the lines started to get blurred for us. While still trying to figure out what to do with hair(technique) we were also trying to figure out what products to use. I think a lot of us confused product search with technique research and these brands saw an opportunity and pounced. While at the same time a lot of influencers were doing reviews as well and then the pandenmic hit and it was like a perfect storm to make the community explode. But, in our quest we wasted a lot of money and then the tension between brands and influencers started to brew. 3) These stylists got besides themselves. They may have tried to say they were "educating" us, but most of them got on these soapboxes and started to demean influencers and the everyday natural hair woman like myself, when all we were trying to do was figure it out together and create an uplifting community. These stylists came in (especially the ones who started product lines) and made it more about how elevated "their knowledge" was and could careless about making a positive contribution to the community as a whole. They were the queens and we were the peasants and that for me became a HUGE turn off. 4) Influencers were not appreciated and valued as they should have been. To piggy back off of the brands and the stylists issue, you would have to be deaf, dumb and blind not to acknowledge that over 80% of the expansion in the community layed on the shoulders of influencers like yourself. Bottom line without y'all, no money would have been made and majority of these brands would not have been known. In my opinion, the brands did not value you all nearly to the extent that they should have and refused to break bread which was SO DESERVED! So, between that and you all needing to make fresh new content, it was easy to walk away or make a huge decrease in natural hair content. Bottom line for me, the toxicity was driven by non-traditional media, stylists and brands. At this point, we know what to do with our hair, we know what products to use and we don't need to be puppets in big brother's big business and ego. The great thing is the because of you all's natural hair content, we got to know and love your personalities and it was a no brainer to stay online to support you guys when you branched out. I agree that the community will come back, but not like it was and I think that's for the better.

I live for natural hair videos! More specifically, curly hair videos! I don’t think the natural hair “community” is toxic or dying off, I just think most of the KZreadrs are jumping onto the vlog bandwagon. The vlogs, skincare & fragrance like videos have saturated the market & our go-to curly girls/guys aren’t really giving us content 😢.. For those of us who aren’t natural bc it’s trendy, we could watch curly hair videos forever!! But I see a lot of ppl just not wanting to be bothered with the maintenance of curly hair anymore & that’s ok. I really appreciate those who still give us natural/curly hair content!!

I quickly realized while being natural, that my hair actually flourished the most in protective styling. That’s why I like it. The time when I kept my hair and some sort of cornrows or kept doing a lot of wigs, my hair was flourishing underneath because I would moisturize it and then help it grow. Besides, I still do want waist length hair, but I just want my hair to be waist length unstretched, it’s a different kind of goal to achieve because most people want it to be waist length stretched, but I have a different kind of goal. And I want my hair to be super Duper defined with moisture training. I’m excited for this because ultra defined 4C hair is some thing I’d rarely see on anyone a daily basis. It will be cool to be the only one with this kind of curl pattern. And I think people should embrace it more.

I think the natural hair community makes others feel like they’re stepping on eggshells and I partly blame the no oils and no butters movement. While it’s helpful, it came with a lot of rules that people felt they had to follow. Even before that, just the attitudes have changed from supportive to everyone becoming a guru or smh when people don’t do things like they do. I don’t blame you with your braids bc I’m on the fence of locs or getting a weave for a break.

Disagree. All natural hair trends/movements come with rules. I think the no oils, no butters movement came around too late. I think there is a trend fatigue and people are just opting out of the community out of exhaustion.

I been following you for years and have loved your natural hair content because that’s what I was looking for. When you moved to lifestyle I still love it and think it can be more entertaining and informational with other topics than just hair but please don’t completely leave! Just do lil pop ups with hair updates/videos cause I need it 🥹 but I love what you do regardless. Definitely do what makes you happy cause yes it can be toxic

I agree with EVERY single thing you stated about the climate in the natural hair community sis 💯💯 1. The toxicity when it comes to our hair (comparisons, work place, racism) 2. Weather (even in the fall/winter, I personally don't feel like hair content will be of interest) 3. It's getting boring (to me) and now I'm more invested in the lifestyle/vlogging content (we've seen pretty much every natural hairstyle you can do, repetitiveness with hair maintenance (technique/routine)) 4. Hair brands aren't paying creators what they're worth (equality/equity) 5. Honestly, I'm just tired of the maintenance when it comes to my natural hair. However, I'm in LOVE with my actual natural hair 😍 I love how you set up your content. You make it versatile where it's not all hair (like it used to be) content or it being all lifestyle content. You give us a little bit of everything here and there, which keeps me intrigued and wanting to come back for more lol 💯🤣😍😍 You're my fav !! You're literally my twin (in my head) 🤣🤣

In the summertime, I always get my box braids tailbone length, never too heavy & I like it! I leave them in for 2 months & get the crown and nape touched up. Month 3, I take them down! Yes, while wearing, I detox my scalp with apple cider vinegar, shampoo & deep condition every other week! Oiling my scalp at least 2-3 times a week! Last Thanksgiving, I went back to texlaxing my hair after nearly 7 years! I don’t regret going natural, but I really miss wearing hairstyles that don’t require too much heat! I absolutely love roller sets or roller wrap hairstyles, and the relaxer helps eliminate using heat from curling iron or flat iron! ☺️♥️

My hair has been natural most of my life. I had relaxers from 1985 to 1991... chopped that off and then back to my natural hair. To me there wasn't a community...it was just what I was doing with my hair. When a community developed ...no big deal...I still do what I do. People can have their opinions but it doesn't change me...I will never put hair straighteners on my hair ever again. For those few times I want straight hair . . . There's are wigs. That works for me.

I found a tip for removing knots at your roots. They said to mix up warm water and oil and spray them on your roots after taking down the braids, after some time you should be able to break it up with a comb. Haven’t tried this yet but I felt I could share anyway.

Yeah. It just took me 3 hours to do my youngest's coils. I tried doing bigger coils. Guess what? Still took me 3 hours! And after a month of wearing them & his hair being long there is dandruff which takes another hour of washing & detangling. And he won't wear it the other way cause I still can't figure out how to refresh it without it looking so big so he hates it. My oldest takes less time to do twists but he hates sitting for them so he just wants to wash & go but his curls are tighter & low porosity so instead it's a dry, frizzy mess. His curls are never defined unless he sits under a dryer but hates that too so he walks around with a mess. I'm so over it & the hundreds of dollars it has cost me cause the products I use on 1 doesn't work on the other.😭

@@sjackson5980 his hair is not a mess its; doing what its naturally meant to do😊. I believe this is why many of us are having such a hard time with our type 4 hair. We are basically fighting against it in many ways because of the "socially accepted" aesthetic we are trying to achieve.

@@MT-yx5cu Well I'm going to need it to accept moisture. That is what it should naturally be doing since it needs to be washed cause even that is a struggle. Especially cause I just spent $60 on Ouidad & even the Curl stretching milk turned his hair into an afro. Stripped all the curls out.😡

@@sjackson5980 why are you forcing it to curl if it wants to frizz or afro🙂? I will present this: try the Miche Lavish Leave-in (it has to be ordered on-line). It's a great detangler (use with lots of water) and it's VERY moisturizing. After that sets in, I use either the Doux mousse or Design Essentials Almond Mousse. The mousse defines my coils and locks them in place. I may spritz with a little oil/or shine serum during the week for a bit more sheen but it's not needed. The products are slightly expensive but very much worth it. After 4 yrs of being natural and trying EVERYTHING these products are what I use to maintain my hair and achieve a polished look, although I love rocking a frizzy, fluffy afro as well with just my leave-in and a touch of oil. These are the only 2 stylers I use and my hair is past my armpit. I have a mixture of 4a-4c (true 4c) and a patch of 3c coils. I hope this helps ☀️.

@@MT-yx5cu It's not that I was forcing it to curl. His hair is curly. It was curly when I put it in. Curly when I detangled it, brushed it. I can't control it or make it do what I want it to do cause if I could the 1st thing I would do is make it take water. But maybe I will try ur suggestions in a few months. Right now I'm tired of spending $ and said after this last time if it doesn't work then back to silicones it is for his hair.***Actually I just read the ingredients. Aloe & Avocado dry his hair out. The best thing I found was a rice protein deep conditioner, but as a leave in I only find it with other ingredients that dry his hair out.

People have been saying the natural hair community is toxic forEVER. Like for the past several years I see videos popping up about it being toxic. I don't really agree though. I just think people have the basics down for the most part and it's repetitive now, like you said. Yeah, there's length and texture obsession, but that's literally always been there. Even when I was new to the community in 2010/11. If it's not length or texture, it's people bashing wig wearers, or bashing people who style their baby hairs and edges. It's always something lol! This is nothing new, just changing seasons. People will be back to twist outs and wash and gos soon enough.
