Leaving My Tesla UNPLUGGED at an Airport for 7 DAYS
Ойын-сауық
I left my Tesla Model 3 at a UK airport for 7 days, and when I returned I was surprised by the battery % loss and the faults. How much battery did it lose? Did I have enough battery to get home after I returned to the car, or did vampire drain kill my state of charge? Here are some tips and tricks to get the most from the Tesla Model 3.
What would you do if leaving your Tesla for long periods of time? Constantly charge it?
Thanks for watching, Chris.

Great video, thank you. This is something I've been wondering for a while as I wait on my new Model 3 which is "due" in May. As I'm still trying to figure everything out about this car, one question I do have is regarding Sentry Mode. Do you ever use it, and if so how often and when? Also, how much battery does it use over time? Thanks in advance.

Another model 3 youtuber recently found out that his "vampire drain" (he lost 1km per hour) has been caused by the "Teslafi" App which is communicating way too often with the car, not letting it sleep at all.

We’re here for the Tesla videos! My car was at the shop for a week when I was getting it wrapped. I had sentry mode on, checked the app literally every couple of hours. When they were wrapping the doors the HVAC was on for hours at a time, I only lost 1-3% daily. If that. I lost like 16% over the whole week.

That is bullshit. Sentry mode keeps the car awake and it uses 300W just for that. If you have 24hours of sentry that is 24*300 that is 8kWh or around 12% each day. +hvac. No way in hell did you loose 1% -3% which is less than 2kWh or about 8 hours of operation...

This was very useful. I’ve heard they drain the battery quite a lot but that seems to be a myth. Certainly with the model 3

This was one of my concerns. We usually go to the USA for three weeks at a time - not worth going that for for less - and I was concerned about how much the battery would have lost over this time.

i'm pretty sure if you would of done a reboot with both scroll buttons while driving(it is safe) everything would of been working fine again...sometimes glitches do occur and this is the easiest quick fix, from a model 3 owner to another ;)
Thank you from the US. I’m very interested in your range and any insight you have. I was impressed with your travel to the airport and using 20ish %. I have a m3p on order and having range and degradation anxiety and there are very few discussions of real world numbers or owners believe it’s okay to be put out. Do you believe the regen makes a difference? “Keep it real” and Cheers. Thanks again.

What exactly is your concern? In my experience real world range is approx. 10%-15% lesser than claimed or what you see displayed. Could be more depending on the conditions, driving style etc. Driving on the highway is least efficient as you are not using Regen breaking.. Counter-intuitive when compared to an ICE car.
Did you try a reboot to see if the issues would clear up. Usually when I have an issue I use the hold the scroll wheel till the Tesla icon comes back up. That usually fixes any issues.

I have done this a few times with other issues, but I've been sat at home or on my own. I didn't fancy the risk with the family in the car (and away from home).

If you ever do this again, when you return to the car after several days of inactivity, if you are seeing issues with the speed limit indicators or cruise control, try resetting the screen and see if that fixes anything. Click and hold the two steering wheel dials until the screen goes black and reboots. Just curious if that would have fixed your issues. Great info. Thanks for the video.

Thanks Jason, fortunately I was aware of the reset, but I didn't want to risk it before heading home. I've done it before when my wipers were playing up, but I was sat on my drive at the time.
My thoughts, one of the sensors had grime on it! Which probably got removed by driving it or heavy rain fall

It definitely wasn't that, as that's confirmed by an error message. This had no errors at all relating to the cameras.

Great idea. Unfortunately the seller I used doesn’t sell them anymore.
Was it still in valet mode maybe? Just thinking. I really like the car just wish South Africa would bring the car here without a 35 - 40% hike in price as import tax
I was wondering if you could help me out here.. How I can see the amount of KWH used each day or month for charging the car? I want to see the total KWH I used exclusively for charging. The Tesla app doesn't tell me and neither does the car when I click on the charge icon..I am sure it's buried somewhere but I don't know where.
I think that the cameras will have needed to recalibrate having not been used for the 7 days. Safety feature to ensure they work as required.

Do both tech and Tesla each week!
Not driven in almost 3 weeks now because of the current situation only lost about 8% (bit more due to software update) feel like could last at least 6 months on a single charge.
Good video. I'm getting the Model 3 myself (delivery due end of March, that's assuming society hasn't collapsed from the Coronavirus haha) and I'm going on holiday for two weeks so I always wondered how much my battery would drain over that time. But good to know it will be minimal. Is it possible that your cameras were obscured with dirt, which prevented autopilot from engaging. When I test drove the Model 3, the autopilot wouldn't engage and an error message popped up saying that I needed to clean the passenger side camera. Could also be the reason why your car wasn't picking up speed signs? Just a guess.

@tonantos

@@whocares264 Oh doesn't it? My mistake
@SpawnPoiint

It wasn’t dirt as those error messages say so. They usually say the ‘front left camera is obscured’ or similar. This just said it wasn’t available. The next day it worked after a charge (and not cleaned). I imagine it was a software issue.
Did you set it to preheat once you’d landed? I wonder if that would have helped get some heat into the battery pack before you’d left and you’d have had regen a bit earlier? Was the front camera fogged up after sitting for the week?
@SpawnPoiint

I didn't open the app again or pre-heat as I wanted to see the impact on leaving it alone. Next time I will do, but as this was a first test I didn't unfortunately.
@marcusbiller867
4 жыл бұрын
You have to preheat a lot to get a 7 days cold battery to temperature. It will suck a lot of energy on a short 50mile trip. He still had some regen, but probably just 15-25kW. Plus you don't really need that much if you don't drive in the city. Preheating, outside of just heating the cabin for 3 minutes, would suck too much.
Humm. There must be something wrong with my wife’s new model y. While she is at work for 9 hours, she always loses 2% battery.
You say it's really quiet, could you demonstrate how quite it is like with a decibel meter and maybe compare it with a normal petrol or diesel car both on normal roads and motorways?

I realise the Tesla may well be a better car but the Leaf holds its own with reliability :) I know it has no battery cooling, so before you reply with this issue I should tell you that.. That's awesome to hear! Congrats.
we can all relate
Using the app to check on the car uses virtually zero power. Using Scan My Tesla app, the computer systems the app wakes up to check on the vehicle consume 2 watts of power, or 1/5 of an LED lightbulb. If you checked the car via the app once every day for a month, it would equate to less than 1.8% of battery drain. Before update 2019.5.xx, the computers sometimes didn’t return to a sleep state after waking- this has resolved and all systems return to sleep around 30 seconds after an app wake. The point is, don’t feel bad about checking your model 3 via the app. It has low power processing cores that handle app access. I have a 2019 Model 3 Performance and it has been by FAR the best car I’ve ever owned. My wishlist for future updates is to include pillar camera footage in sentry mode and allow us to view/delete sentry mode footage on the center screen- I can’t believe both of these haven’t been added already. Not having pillar camera footage leaves a huge blind spot in sentry mode and driving camera footage.

Your issue seems to be endemic to electric vehicles of all types. If we leave a train shut off for a while in the cold they take ages to initialise and the software does act odd or doesn't work at all. A reset usually sorts out all the issues. Maybe this would help the Tesla.
