Thanks - was definitely a lot to take in and a lot of mistakes to work through along the way... was close to giving up a few times but powered on through to the end!

The wood turning was a confusing mix of relaxation and frustration... leatherwork was all joy though, was the most fun part of the project.

I like what you have done here a lot. You have great skill and patience. I really love the final product. I love using a wax finish too, but i think i would have used a traditional Danish style Soap Finish myself on this. It's very easy to make your own Soap finish. And although it's not highly durable, the feel and look of it is unbeatable (in my opinion) on oak.

This is super cool! Loved seeing the process of this one. Really beautiful color, I expected to the back to be higher though. Still, looks so expensive - love that brand at the end.

Thanks - the back was actually meant to be a bit taller than it ended up - I accidentally cut one of the pieces too short so had to make the others the same height to match.

What a beautiful chair! You have inspired me to try to make something similar in the near future. I am thinking of trying some veg tan leather and let it develop it's own character over time. Perhaps just with a darker colour wood! Looking forward to your next video.

Talk about going the extra mile. This is beautiful work my friend. It’s also a well edited and nicely lit video, with a fantastic result. The choice of grain and texture in each component are superb and the hand stitched finish, is icing on the cake. Something to be truly proud of 👌🏻

Hey Chris this was an awesome video and I loved seeing you work. You have a natural affinity with the materials and the workspace. I might just recommend lowering the toolrest on the lathe a tiny bit; if your tool catches in the wood up there, it'll go flying into your body and likely do quite a bit of damage! It's good that you're trying to work with new techniques on the tools though and sometimes you have to play with stuff like that! Keep up the awesome work!

Thanks, yeah I did adjust the technique and sharpening as I went on. Most of the turning footage was really my first ever time on a lathe. Lucky nothing went too badly, at least the face shield would have prevented anything too bad

Good start mate! Next time you may want to think of reinforcing the joints, because glue alone without spreading shims, for example, will not last you, especially for a chair...

1:54 when grinding, if the tool edge goes blue, (as it has at 1:54) you've overheated it and drawn the temper out. It'll never keep an edge for long now!

Yeah I realised that as I progressed, definitely went a lot lighter on the grinding later on in the process. That was pretty much my first go at sharpening the gouge

@@KastnerFurniture you can harden and temper it again ofcourse, but persevere with the sharpening until its dead the buy a new one! Always have a pot of water near the grinder and dont be shy in using it.

I wanted to see someone sit on that so bad! Very nice job though.

I enjoyed your video and just subscribed. Since you asked it looked like your tool rest was a little high on the lathe. Maybe it was the camera angle but it should be about at the center line of the work piece.

Thanks! Yeah it definitely was a bit high. A lot to learn still and teaching yourself this kind of thing I ended up just working a lot out with trial and error... next woodturning I do I'll have a lot of changes to make, especially with the skew chisel.

It's a hardwax oil (made by Whittle Waxes here in Australia). Lovely stuff, so easy to use and has a really nice feel once it's dry.

How thick is that leather?

Needs more cowbell, otherwise all manner of dope! 😘

Happy to share! The back legs are 690mm tall, front are 520mm, arms 730mm long, and supports/seat are 560mm wide (plus an extra 10mm or so that slotted into the legs). There are probably some changes I would make if I were to do it again, e.g. make the back a bit taller... I did start with a design in SketchUp which I would share, but I ended up deviating a fair bit from that as I went (judged a lot of the dimensions by eye, and testing it as I went along in terms of the height to put the cross-bars etc.). The front and back legs are both angled inwards (i.e. the top of the legs tilt towards the centre of the chair), and the arms tilt down a few degrees. I don't have the exact angles for these, but kinda just did that by laying the side frames out on the ground and did what "looked" good. Guess the trickiest bit was working out the height of the front horizontal support - just made sure that it was lower than where my knees would be with my feet flat on the ground. The mortises for all the spindles were a real pain... drilling into a tapered leg with an angled hole, on round stock, was a real challenge!

@@KastnerFurniture Thank you so much for this info.. Although it will be impossible for me to build something like this, I'm pretty sure can make an amateur version for my outdoor space. With my 2 left hands I will use nothing but simple wooden beams in straight corners... I'll also have to replace the leather with two straps, on which I will add smaller wooden planks.. Can you help me with the height of the leg rest (at the front of the chair, where your knees go), with the depth between the front and the back leg, and.. with the length of the leather? Thank you so much!!!

Excellent video, if you manage to develop your style I’m sure you will become very popular. You could have finished the video sitting in the chair with you enjoying a glass of something at an angle to maintain anonymity, if that’s your aim.

Nice job. Precise. Do you think tha back arm rest joint is strong enough? If Im not wrong it is "just" glued in the groove. Strain of that part when you put a weight of a body on it could be big. May be you see later, may be it will last. Anyway thanks for sharing this. Good luck!

Time will tell, but they're holding up perfectly fine a few months in. They're in a fair way and the glue is tougher than the wood so I'm not so concerned about it coming loose as much as the wood snapping... touch wood.

Great build but that joint needs a redesign. Long to endgrain all around, could think about a throught mortise to gain more long to long grain surface.

Do you assume the leather will stretch through time?

A little but the leather I chose was very thick... it's been over 4 years since they were finished and it's a negligible amount.

I have a Question please tell me what skin did you use? and how to make sure that the skin does not stretch over time? 🙏🏽🙏🏽

It's leather but it's 3.5mm thick. It'll take a lot to stretch something that size and thickness... it may happen over time but aftrr 18 months of use so far, I don't notice any change.

@@KastnerFurniture Thank you for the lightning fast response. This is thick leather! Does it stretch when in use or at that thickness it's stiff enough? I'm looking to replace the seat and back on a chair set (plywood and cushion covered in fabric) with just leather glued to the wood frame and secured with upholstery nails. The seat would be 22x20, with no support underneath and I'm worried that the leather will stretch. Your project is relatively similar, hence the question.

@@serbanpopescu1032 haven't had any stretching after a year of use... they don't get a lot of people sitting on them day to day, but don't think thick leather will stretch much. Soften maybe but stretch not so much...

I "did it myself" with pretty much no experience... it helps being able to afford the tools, but the biggest thing stopping you from being able to do it yourself is yourself.

I'm sorry to say but its a pretty bad design. You should have used rope or wire for the lower stays, because there is a force pulling them apart and over time the chair will fall apart. I would have funcion and also look better.
