While not perfect, it definitely improves (a) the look and (b) prevents further tearing. The ones that notice it the most are the ones that do the repair, but anyone who didn't know the tear was there before, most won't pick up on it.

To avoid lateral cleaning we can use masking tape on the either side of the cut in longitudinal way, just like we do while painting a wall. 👍

Yes, just bear in mind that when you do the colouring of the repair, you'll want to feather outward, but the tape is am excellent idea when using the filler and/or glue.

I have edges that need to be closed bc it was cut by a knife. This cut in my leather chair is a long gash. Would i be able to use the filler to add to the hole so that i could make the hole with the backing on to fill the hole on the chair, also how large is the bottle of filler, would it repair 2 pieces of furniture? Thanks for your help

I made a half inch slash on my seat, not punctured all the way thru the leather, do I still need a piece cloth under the small gash?

Hi there, if the damage is not all the way through the leather, you don't need to use the backing. The backing is really used to help lend support to a repair where the leather has been cut all the way through. Also, it will help with glue application and bonding of the leather. In the case of a slash, you should be OK with, first and foremost, the leather glue to bond the two sides of the slash and maybe leather filler if there is too much of a depression where the leather is bonded. Often, the glue/vinyl adhesive and some colorant are enough. Hope this helps.

When you know where the damage is, it's always easy to focus on the damage and obviously it will always be visible to a degree. The goal of touch-up is to camouflage and is rarely perfection. However, a repair that's done effectively, won't draw the eye unless you go out of your way to look for it. Also, when a tear is the issue, better to do a less-than-perfect repair in order to prevent exacerbating the damage.

If you are in Canada, you can contact us at dfpservice@dfp.ca (we have a $50 minimum order requirement). You could also check on our distributor page at dfp.ca - if a distributor doesn't carry it, they may be able to bring it in and they may also have more flexible minimum order amounts.

The least expensive option for small tears and touch-ups on leather and vinyl would be a kit similar to the one at this link www.tradesecret.ca/?page_id=261 . It provides products and tools to simplify colour matching and repairing of minor damage. Otherwise, there are limitations on what you can do, but in theory, you could always attempt to bond a tear using a standard PVA glue (similar to a white glue) and you could actually use felt markers to colour the repair. Let's be clear, this will not provide a very strong bond and will not permit for colour mixing, bu this would be an alternative to purchasing a kit or specific leather repair products. I hope this helps.

Not necessarily. The reason we indicate that is more to reinforce that if you are going to do it yourself, you should be comfortable with this sort of repair, colour matching, etc. The process is definitely not rocket science, but by the same token, it's the sort of thing that can certainly go from bad to worse if there isn't a certain level of comfort, ability and patience exercised in the process.

It was being used as, essentially, a spatula to remove excess filler and glue. While you can use other tools such as a plastic spatula or even a plastic loyalty or credit card (even the dental-type tool), they tend not to be as effective in removing the excess material from the grain and for this type of repair, you want to make sure that the leather grain doesn't get leveled. If there is too much grain movement missing from the repair, it will be too smooth unless you use graining paper or something similar to simulate the grain in the repair area and the eye will be drawn to it.
