I have just started to get back into the SCA and have been hunting for something exactly like what you're giving here. When I was younger I had a friend who's parent's guided and let me use their tools for making SCA equipment, and without their help I felt lost. THANK YOU for giving such detailed videos, it's been a life saver.

Have you gotten to test the gauntlets since you've made them? You do such amazing work it inspires me to make more of my own. I've been getting more of an interest in two handed axe combat, and the idea of making my own leather hardened gauntlets sounds fantastic

I haven't, but I've fiddled with some hafts and feel they are pretty solid. Always room for improvements, especially since they're new, and I have to build another set here soon so I'll make small changes again as I do so.

I love the viking carving, Hill Carpenter, man and learning how to chisel I sure could use the gauntlet from my left hand. I will probably hit my thumb like 1000 times with a hammer will learning how to chisel and even when I when I’m good at chiseling I’ll still hit my hand times.

Really cool, once they’re waxed would you say they’d hold up to sparing with blunts or would you limit them to the rattan stuff I’ve seen?

Depends on the type of abuse it's getting. Against blunt strikes? Wax is best. Against cuts? Hot water treatment holds up better

Something something wax acts as a lubricant. I actually rub wax over areas I intend on punching before doing so as it helps the punch glide through the leather.

Did you move away from beeswax in your dipping mix due to the price or was there a negative aspect with the leather?

  • @DarkHorseWorkshop

I just found no reason to use bees wax, paraffin was fine, a bit harder, and cheaper.

@@DarkHorseWorkshop has a hobbyist beekeeper myself I have a lot of beeswax. And most beekeeping clubs will have a big wax dipper to dip our wooden hive bodies in to prolong the life of the wood It's mainly paraffin microcrystalline and some resins but some dipping vats also add some real beeswax in for good smell. I have to check on the temperatures we use for that but each hive body usually gets dipped for 10 minutes and then after it cools down for then dipped for another additional minute and supposedly the high bodies can last many decades compared to painting.

@@DarkHorseWorkshop As a hobbyist beekeeper of non-native invasive agricultural livestock honeybees*, most beeks wax dip their wooden hive boxes so find your local beekeeping clubs and see when they wax dip, they may allow leather to be dipped for a small fee. Some clubs are very strict, new bare wood boxes only, others are more lax, most use paraffin microcrystalline & resins and some also add some real beeswax for smell. Those wax temps are around 270-285*F *True, honeybees are not native to the entire US Continent. (Europe and Africa native range) Beekeeping is not conservation, it's agriculture. It's not good for our native pollinators nor the environment we've learned. Outcompeting for forage, transmitting diseases and viruses to native pollinators and most likely propagating more non-native plants than native plants = bad for the ecosystem. ONLY native plants (and animals) help to heal an ecosystem. Beekeeping is good for people, healthy hive products, money, pollination services for unsustainable ag practices, but it's not helping the environment. Hence we are downsizing our beekeeping to eventually nothing. Located in SE PA.
