Levi shows a simple technique for quickly and effectively adding a bit of natural looking aging to rope and cord. This is used extensively for adding a bit of texture to newly manufactured items that are to be used as movie props. This particular type of aging is great for medieval, western and fantasy movies where the level of breakdown varies from brand new to extremely abused. One of the benefits of this type of cosmetic aging is that the structural integrity of the leather can be controlled by overworking the outside of the cordage but maintaining it's strength on the inside.

    Very clever. I’ll be watching you. I’m not a novice, but self educated in leather working. As you may know, self education is great, but misses a lot of basics. Never know so much we can’t still learn. Thanks!😊

    I tried this with my leather jacket, but it got all fucked up. One of the sleeves had completely ripped off. Fonzie says I’m a nerd.

    any advice on how to age a leather shoulder holster I though of using sand paper and a wire brush but didn't want to damage the leather to much. its a 150 dollar holster by gelco.

    +maxphobia sandpaper is a good option but it always depends on the level of aging required. 800 grit sand paper and mink oil will give you a very light rubbed aging but you could go up to 150 grit for light scuffing. Or even rub it sharply on the concrete if you want a really big scratch. Soaking sections in water or alcohol will leave water stains. Avoid wire brushes made from steel as the steel leaves microscope shards that damage the leather over time. If you want stretched sections then soaking in water and pulling or pushing will reshape it.

    This is exactly the effect I need for my sandals heel strap.... think is, the strap is thicker, way shorter, and wider.... what would you suggest with this? I need to do this because the ankle portion digs into my ankles!

    I would just work it with your hands to break it in. Takes a while but will make it comfortable eventually.

    When I need to age leather straps I apply some neetsfoot oil with a rag (not a lot, just enough to coat the leather), work it in by folding the leather in half with the grain side touching and rub it against itself for a while. Don’t use too much pressure. Afterwards I place the strap in direct sun light for a few hours to a couple days. Give the leather a fantastic aged and worn look.

    Any tips for softening a couple of 'vintage' ('80s) studded biker style cuffs? They're brand new, old stock. Both have a coloured surface which is cracking a bit with my attempts to take the rigidity out of them, as the leather is quite think. Guessing moisture might be needed? On a side-note, have you ever come across the tradition of the buckle being placed upside down? This is the case with both, and I've seen it elsewhere. I find it a bit annoying, but I'd have to take out the rivet to re-position it, I suppose.

    Needs a leather conditioner. Something with oil in it. Aussie leather conditioner or neatsfoot oil. Once it is rehydrated it can be backrolled, sanded, hammered etc.

    Using that same rope what is the best way to make it look finished on all 4 sides to match the one finished side? Thank You

    The finished side is the outside of the animals skin. I do not know of a way to make the other sides match it in look and feel. You could try a couple of things to make the flesh sides smoother and nicer looking. 1. Burnish the edges. Using beeswax and a piece of wood or plastic rub the edge until it heats up and smooths out. 2. Use Urad Cream. This is urine based leather finish and it melts the flesh a bit so that it becomes smooth to the touch. Check out some of my belt making videos to see how I use Urad cream. 3. Paint the edges with acrylic paint. This will come off with wear and is really just adding a plastic coating. But it would work on something that almost never gets untied.

    How would I distress a leather jacket? Do you think rubbing alcohol and sand paper would be enough?

  • @DrawbridgeProps

    @DrawbridgeProps

    I use alcohol if I want to restore leather as it cleans it. Distressing garment leather usually involves wear so there are two things that I like to do: Sand it with various grits of sand paper from 320 - 1000 make sure that you fold the leather or put in on a mannequin so that you can put more aggressive wear on the usual spots. If you want aggressive aging, like holes it is good to use a dremel with a little sanding drum. The next step is to add stain and leather antique gel over the sanding. I would probably sand back through the stain after it is dry. You can also paint most leather with a dry brush technique using acrylic paint. Sanding and staining will give you almost any degree of look that you would want on a jacket. Good luck!!
