Learning Sledgehammer... in Peter Gabriel's studio
Музыка
Hey, so this lesson's a bit different...
In fact... very different.
Namely because you're about to see inside Peter Gabriel's studio (we've been shooting a brand new course there with someone suuuuper cool - you'll find out who in the new vid).
Not only are you going see inside Peter's studio (it's AMAZING by the way), I also thought it'd be fun to break down and deconstruct the bass line from one of his greatest hits, Sledgehammer...
There's a tonne of cool stuff that you can learn (and apply) from this bass line... but most of all, there's an extra awesome bass fill that every bass player should know in there too!
As always, see you in the shed...
Scott :)

I absolutely love Tony Levins' playing. I always think he's overlooked as one of the very best and most creative innovators of our time.

Never ever overlooked him. Those music purists know he’s one of the best, & so do the countless artists who’ve hired his skill. His playing & groove is something else, you are right.

@@WatershipAlan dude nolly kills on guitar too! check out red seas fire. nolly actually had a signature 7 string guitar way before he was in periphery.
Been listening to "So" pretty solidly for the past week and my new Stingray Special just arrived yesterday. Couldn't be more timely!
Scott, this is one of my favorite lines from one of my top 3 bassists, personally (Geddy Lee and Jeff Berlin), and this lesson is off the charts valuable. Thank you for it. Simply one of the best I've seen from you.
Awesomeness - I recall (many moons ago) his (Tony Levin) interview in Bassist Magazine, great read! Loved his funk fingers invention too!
It's obviously hard to teach, but the other thing that sets this track apart is Tony's GROOVE. Gabriel's one of the best, but he's never been known for writing super-funky tracks. This is a really notable and welcome exception.
The key to Tony's playing, seems to be the breaks/notes he DOESN'T play, which adds to the vibe of the track. Of course, his tone on this record was outstanding and definitely served the track, vs. dominating it. But just imagine the track with someone dancing all over it vs. playing it for the groove itself? Stunning.
Hi Scott, thanks for breaking down the harmonics of this song. Been playing this for years, always amazed about the weird yet beautiful flavour of tonality. This is one of my favourites, also for the spot on, laid back appearing groove.
The Shiz! Great tone and lovely playing. Thanks heaps, I play this as a goto track, nice to see a good player elucidating it, and love the studio tour. Fully sick!
Just learning this song for my band. This has been fantastic help. Many thanks!!!
Love your work and TLev is my favorite! Thanks for the practice tips, I could play this for days...
Thanks so much for this lesson and breaking Sledgehammer down Scott, super video! Wow I never really realized what an awesome and groovy bass line it had, you sound phenomenal as always.
That was great! One of my favorite songs.
this is a gold mine of information for me; i have been trying to figure the mixolydian feel for a while . thank you!
Damn this track is well produced ! The bass is just there in your face, still leaving a lot of room for the vocals and drums. Great !

I was 14 the first time I stumbled across King crimson play "People".. saying it changed my prospective and enthusiasm is an understatement. Next week at band practice there I was with some sawed off wooden drum sticks taped to my fingers, I thought I was going to be cheeky suprise my mentor who was the drummers dad and in his own right.. an absolute monster bass player. Sam walks in the room and says to me "Alright kiddo, you've got the funk fingers going on, we should get you some 3/4 pvc pipe". I respond.. " I think Tony uses wood, I saw in the live video".. Sam responds.. "He uses 3/4 pvc pipe... he told me himself... over a cup of coffee in New York several years ago". Enough said.. I was in home depot the next day lol Funny little story I'll never forget.
please do more of these types of videos where you take a bassline and break down how we can improvise over it, fantastic.
Peter and his band are the soundtrack to my life, I can’t imagine getting to be there, no joke.
awesome video! one of best songs ever by one of the best musicians
Thanks for this video! This bass line is one of the greatest.
Great stuff Scott! Great analysis! Great song! Thanks bunches! T Levin freaking kills on Sledgehammer! Of course, the entire album is unspeakably awesome! Keep at it mate!
Love the baseline in this song, always been one of my favorites
Man, Tony is one of the best. Anyone who hasn't already should check out the two Bozzio Levin Stevens albums. Tony is like the glue bringing everything together. Such an amazing player.

i put my bass away for like 6 years just picked it back up and ppl really do come back stronger.
The first concert I went to was Peter Gabriel's back to front tour and Tony Levin is still the most powerful bassist I've ever heard.
When you play, looks like easy! 😊Congratulations! Very good! Best regards from Brazil!
Hey I am a classical violinist, I will start to play the bass as hobby and let me tell you, I love your videos. Thanks a lot for sharing your passion. Awesome stuff ❤️
So much appreciation for Tony Levin!!! Super excited for the Nolly course too!
You are pure bass love!!!! Salute you from Venezuela...
Quite a pharaonic setting! Pop/rock musicians have constructed their Valley of the Kings tombs right in the open for........ terrestrial immortality.
Scott between you and Tony you're making me really want to learn bass!
Love the theory explanation, thank you.
Scott that bass tone is fire . Great video mate
I had the pleasure of working with Nolly a few times, and he is just one of my favorite people ever. Such a great dude!!!
2:50 Hey Vsauce, Michael here!
ABSOLUTELY AWSOME
Such an amazing bassline, Tony Levin for the win there, Peter's got such a KILLER groove in this song. Still, not ONE mention on this being a FRETLESS bass song? Seems like honestly the biggest detail of the entire track, the octave is just frosting. I just can't believe there wasn't more emphasis put on the fact that this is a fretless track through and through and requires a different approach to playing and Tony's vibratos. Cool breakdown, bummed you didn't play the other parts of the song though. Even for the "all you do is call me" part, he heads back down to the low notes for a quick effective low-end lick then back to the major riff.

Yes, Fretless MM with a PICK and an octaver, to get down to the low Eb. Not detuned. Lots of compression going on to, but that is studio mix and overall processing. I can play it with Funky Fingers and it gives that "pluck" to it too, but it's not that kosher... I think it's more important to tell that it is with a PICK than a fretless.
@57precision

Scott is literally playing a fretless in the video, what more do you want?
@jamcam9
2 жыл бұрын
I'm a fretless player primarily. Everyone knows its a fretless track. It would be like saying "Jaco played a fretless jazz" - everyone knows it, it's redundant. Plus he's literally playing a fretless.
Great Lesson 🎶🎶
Great track choice, one you clearly relay your enjoyment in playing. I like your mid string selection in this piece, keeps away from the more cutting attack on the top string and flows with the sliding fluidity of the groove. No twang/slap required. The track has that essential space between the instruments that means the bass can be processed, but not drown anything out. Tony’s playing masterfully complements his fellow musicians rather than nudging them out with an outright funky stomp.
About time someone revisited this amazing track...! Nice one SD.. ! Saw this Live in the 90's at Earl's Court...Phenomenal show..
"Don't give up" has also an awesome bassline.

On the "Live in Athens 1987" version, Levin can be seen at approx 2.41 playing the Gb, F, Eb fill at the 11th/10th/8th frets.
Tony Levin bass work on sledgehammer is outstanding. Plus the video from Aardmann (Morph, Chicken run, Wallace and Gromit) is fantastic.

god that’s a nice sound
Definitely a very cool fat sounding bass line. As always thanks for putting the stuff out there.

Nice video! Terrific bass player amigo;-)
As far as I can remember from the 80's double vinyl cover credits bassist Tony Levin and drummer Steve Copeland play this bass riff together. Tony Levin is using his left hand only while Steve Copeland is playing with both sticks on. This awesome sound led to the beginning of Tony Levin's Finger Stick technique!
Thank you for this video
Nice GWB35. Other than the cheat fret lines, I love mine
YOU ARE AMAZING!!!! AND AN ANGEL!!!!
That’s great!!!!!!
Very good!!!
I used to study Manu and Vinnie! Playing bass these days I underrated levin with Gabriel and King Krimson, he is pretty good for sure.
Spent time at that studio in 1988 during the recording of the soundtrack to Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ and while the big room (then nicknamed "the ziggurat") was being built and nearing completion. Amazing times. Loved the drum room built in the old mill room above the stream with glass floor and mesh/grate drum riser on hydraulics. Bass specific, Gabriel played some scratch jam tracks of him with Darryl Jones playing bass and Billy Cobham playing drums.
Nolly nolly nolly nolly nolly nolly
Never heard of nolly but I like his bass playin! :)
Lucky dog haha 😜 that bass sounds great by the way SCOTT.. I know you're not the only one to want to crank that song up in that studio if I could get there I would do it too... I'm going to watch this whole video from start to finish and I'm already liked And subscribed buddy!!
Ya youve got the hair style right so ... Ya nailed it.
Over egging it comment, Love it! Thanks because it is what it is...Playing and mixing.
With Tony Levin's line, to me, I hear the heavy influence of some of Stevie Wonder's Moog bass lines and vibe from his track "Boogie On Reggae Woman". kzread.info/dash/bejne/q6CFr8qSobbUpM4.html
Watching this in the future, post a metal lesson being added, and was so confused to see Nolly in the thumbnail, lol

Think Sledgehammer was the first single I bought. Epic track!
Awesome!!!
Nice work- with this excellent riff. You also can use drop D(ead) tuning when working with an ordinary 4-string, but just tune E to D to have a two-octave riff with all the gadgets.

Sledge Hammer is no problem on any 4-string bass in standard tuning with an octaver (any octaver does the job).
It's been years since I've listened to this, but now I hear it as the love child of Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Wonder. Love Tony Levin's playing.
Thts seriously a sexy groove...

Ibanez and their crappy QA, bah. I bought a used Ibenez bass-uneven frets, battery plate didn't fit (I filed it), sloppy soldering shorted the terminal in the jack against the plug (I bent it), and more. Bought one of their Promethean 300 watt amps, the speaker was bad. I just got the label to send it back today. Both these got rave reviews, with the occasional complaint. I guess it's worth the extra money to go to your LOCAL MUSIC STORE (remember those?) and play before you buy, so you know what you're getting.
Some fun ass metal!!!!!! 🤘🏼
Love the videos! Can you give details on the the bass you're using in this Sledgehammer video? Also the signal chain? (i.e make of octave pedal, etc) Thanks!

Tony Levin himself had a really hard time learning this one. Trey Gunn is a monster of a player (and composer).
One of the greatest albums to hear Tony Levin young and raw right after college with less effects and more raw sound check out Chuck Mangione’s live record title: Alive! It’s Levin on a four string and he tackles the bass showing his raw physical and musical skills. It’s also with a pretty young Steve Gadd on a gretch kit who kills it. It’s a live gig so there’s a lot of stretching. So good because it’s so raw.
Thank you!!!
