#iwanttobeaunicorn you bet Chuck its like you are narrating my own story CCNA networking concepts came so naturally and excitedly to me, while I was still naive in that , but man this Python is so hard to tame (right, those basics does not excite you), tried so many times and gave up, Davids SDN classes are also good where he explains open flow and changing industry trends, there is this one course on "coursera" also "programming for everybody" it is good but again it revolves around hello world and basics which you hate , definitely I want to try Davids approach on this one and yes we have to learn it together #networkrengineerswillkillpython

I came across this after watching your more recent videos, so it’s interesting watching this now. My breakthrough for scripting was finding real world scenarios that I could automate with scripts. So for me that has been api work.
I had a boss that introduced me to SQL and that helped me a lot.
I thought Python was going to be tough, but it's no more difficult than DOS batch that I used to do back in the day. David Bombal really helped me get over the hump and grasp Python for Network Engineers.
I just stumbled across this amazing video lol. You've changed so much!
You are a career savior .... I have no words to thank you .....
Thanks for the video, I’m currently getting into Python and api coding coming from Network Engineering LAN data center routing and switching. Industry is going towards automation and SD LAN, it makes sense to know coding as additional tools to have in your back pocket as a Network Engineer.
Dude.. Love this course! Little late to this game, couple videos in and I can tell this is going to change how I do networking and how easy programming will be to learn.
dude, this video spoke for my heart! I know the basics!! I just need a python for networking course ! :'( Thanks man
For me I started doing stuff that I hate doing by hand. I built a network mapper, and a program to map what is plugged in where: Point it at a switch/device with an arp table and it spits out a CSV with port number/IP/MAC address/Device type. Saved me SO MUCH time.

Bulding a map out of a CSV is over here github.com/GoreNetwork/Map-the-network Parse the CDP is here github.com/GoreNetwork/CDP-parser/blob/master/cdp_parse.py Some of my code is specific to my company (pulling domain names off the router names) for the moment, but I am working on putting together a lite version of it for a packet pushers. With this CDP parser and the map writer it should be easy to make one of your own though. Just do a for loop over a list of IPs, and pull the IPs in from CDP neighbors and add those to the list. Should be all you need to build a walker (One thing you might want to add is pull all the IP addresses from the router/switch/etc and have it not SSH back to any IPs you have already done.
@danielhimes9068

github.com/GoreNetwork/What-s-attached-to-switch-walk-though is the switch mapper It walks though the OUIs and applies those descriptions to the port where the MAC address is. Requires some work to get the MAC addresses populated, but works better for me than pulling the name of who has the OUI from the internet in some way.
Hi Chuck! I'm from Brazil and I used to work with Avaya for years.Recently, I started to work with a UC platform called Broadsoft, recently aquired by Cisco. Since the Cisco is updating the CCNA, I beggining with Python on CodeCademy. I just wanted to say thank you Chuck, your content has being consumed by me in my personal routine. When you got a router and switch, was it a certain kind? I'm straight new to this!!! Where they physical devices or strictly digital images of those devices?
This is nice to know! I've been studying for my CCNA, but I also picked up a Udemy course on Python a few weeks back because I've been wanting to get back into programming for fun after avoiding it for so many years. Nice to think that a personal hobby might end up making me more marketable in the professional world.

I have no idea just how powerful and efficient it can be, but if you can streamline any part of the process to cut down on time and have assurance that it is doing everything you want it to, then you'd be crazy to not use that tool.

I’m a programmer in my civilian job and a network admin in my military job and I’m doing my CCNA right now. There are some really amazing things that you can do with network programmability. This is the whole reason I’m leaving my programming job for a civilian networking job. I dunno about the money but the experience is both terrifying and exciting.

Thanks for the inspiration, I started my first python video (Variables 🤣). We all together will learn this scripting language, I hate calling it a programming language 🙂

#Networking is in my veins. 7+ years experience in network domain. I watched one of your videos and buckled up myself preparing for CCIE now.
I did that course already It is amazing, highly recomended
Thanks for the video as it motivate. I'm currently learning Python. I recommended my friend to start which your videos as He want to be Network engineer.
Hi Network Chuck, thanks for making this video, I have a big passion to become a network engineer someday, I start to make my dream come true by studying for my CCENT, more about my background, I’m a tech support with A+ certified, but I am going to get a better life by becoming a network engineer one day. My fear of learning python takes me back to my school days when I really wanted to become a programmer someday but after I found how hard it is to learn coding, I withdrew ny programming class and burried my dream to be a programmer. But now when I learn about how network engineer needs to learn python, my trauma all came back to me, I remember the horror of when I ran a code and a bunch of error filled my screen, I just have to find my long burried passion back again, learning programming is like a young guy attracted to a very beautiful girl, but that guy is broke and every time he tries to talk to the girl his fear of rejections because of his confidence already fall apart before he even start talking to her 😂, I think I have to focus on CCENT first and see if I can learn python someday, thank you for the video
THanks so MUCH.I REALLY ENJOY THE WAY YOUR EXPLAINING IS . I REALLY NEED LESSON ON THESE TOPICS.( CCNA -CCNP- CCIE ) I'M NEW IN THIS FIELD .I APPRECIATE YOUR AFFORDS.

Congrats , i would really advice you to get your hands on Linux. Any python automation you do it will be from a linux box. I know they both are two different areas however anytime you touch a production network for any automation, it will go through linux. I am talking about network at least more than 500 devices. Basic Linux + Python can get you way over the top then 40% of network engineers. I only started python from 2 years but having to know basic Linux really helped me to achieve intermediate automation in my network. PS: Network Engineer since 2009, Learning python since 2016 :)

I know this was years ago, but I hope you set your microwave clock ._.
Everything you said about programming in the beginning was how i felt trying to learn the mind shattering amount of acronyms in networking 😂😂😂
As a Comp Sci major with no viable means of transportation to a place with better offers I decided to settle with what ever I could receive. I just recently applied for an internship at a VoIP company. And this course would be a great way to merge both disciplines. #IWantToBeAUnicorn
Can you please make a video of how Python was useful for your networking career and what specifically you did using it? What level would you say your python skill at now?
I'm really excited about learning to hack but I'm starting from scratch. Is learning coding a good start cause I don't understand much of the hacking stuff Iv seen/read???
I do not have network background, Is Python for Networking is same as Ansible Automation (or) Using YAML scripting
This is helping me in 2020.
Yes, learning programming is hard (for me). I have been in a Computer Programming degree plan in college for about 1 1/2 years. I just switched to Cybersecurity plan yesterday cause as much as I tried, just couldn’t get programming. Hopefully security comes easier.

#IWantToBeAUnicorn Hey Check! Thanks for the shout out in the video, I appreciate it ;-) I love the level of enthusiasm for your craft and the amount of support you want to give to your community, it really helps people like me out, whatever I can do to help you is well worth it. I appreciate you continuing to post the inspirational videos, they really give me that little extra push I need to get things done! Just scheduled my CCNA exam for the middle of January! I have been hitting the Cisco Press books hard since the end of October and am really looking forward to all of that hard work paying off :-) I took your advice from a video that you posted a couple months ago recommending GNS3 as a learning tool, and it has really payed off. I have always been more a tinkerer and a self learner than a structured lab person so GNS3's environment has really helped solidify the knowledge I am learning from the books and other learning material I have found. Since I have been using GNS3 for the last month (and am admittedly a little bit of a KZread junky) I stumbled upon David Bombal's video series and found them to be a wealth of knowledge for learning other engineers strategies, thought processes, and network deployment approaches, I am a big fan of his style. Its funny that you mentioned having taken several Python courses and having been frustrated and not much better than where you left off, because I have been in that exact same boat trying various online Python courses through Coursera! I feel like none of these classes put the work you do into a really meaningful context, so having someone who has tailored a class for networks guys like us is really exciting and gives the knowledge that we may have learned from other classes a real grounding in something real and tangible, not to mention can be applied to your work immediately. As I have stated before in the comment sections of one of your prior videos. I previously worked as a network/central office technician for several large ISP/Telecom providers in Southeast Alaska, helping deploy/maintain various new (and sometimes very old networks). However, since Alaska is not always an easy place to live for a young married couple, and neither my wife or I were satisfied with our current jobs, we decided to move to back down the lower 48 to get a fresh start with all of the opportunities available down her. My wife has started a new job and I am planning on going back to college next fall for Computer Science (I dropped out almost 10 years ago, which is why I was dabbling in Python programming to get back into the swing of things). My passion and career for the last 6 years has been helping build and maintain different types of networks, but know I am ready to take my knowledge and experiences to the next level and be the person who plans out and engineers these networks! The CCNA is just my first steps on this long journey! Thanks again Chuck

If you know C and C++ then python will be very easy for you. I would advice to get a real networking experince while use python as a skill to impress people in the interview since 70% of network engineers dont know that shit :D
Programming comes naturally to me & I was adept at C/Java, but ended up becoming a Network Engineer. Now I am excited that the programming skills I honed for 10+ yrs is finding a place in the Networking industry!
It's pretty cheap as Udemy is having a sale (when aren't they?) and I also bought his CCNA course for a different style of learning (Bryants is good but it's antiquated when it comes to visuals)
I came for the python, i stayed for the beard. Kudos
HAHAHA OMFG just yesterday i watched david bombals video on how to program a router with python running on linux and it also gave me a waves of joy so i know what you mean ! and i get it learning syntax feels pointless but when you learn it along side doing incredibly cool stuff then its a breeze 👍
how many month it need to become start coding in python?

I have to get python PCAP exam certification today and it is more frustrating
Hey, what about some videos for software developers who want to get started with hacking network ? I'm sure we are now a lot coming from John's video :) So, how should I start my learning ? Ok, I don't really start from scratch as in France when you learn coding at school, you have some basics in networking (let's say an overview of different layers, static and dynamic routing protocols, dns, wifi, mainly tcp/ip4/ip6, reading snmp traps, vpn, basic security, …). I even read some courses "intro CCNA" a few years ago for my exams and curiosity.
#IWantToBeAUnicorn Ha, your description is almost word for word my own experience of Python courses. I took 2 last year via a US University that offered free online training. I completed the basics with difficulty and got completely bamboozled by the next one. I have (but haven't started) David's Ansible for Network engineering and wanted to pick the Python course up too - so this would be great if I'm lucky enough to get one. As I said on another post, I'm still waiting for an opening, back in full study mode doing CCNP Route/Switch, hoping to sit Switch either just before Christmas or just after (other commitments permitting). Thanks Chuck!
I gotta give Python another shot. The funny thing is they say it's a lot easier to learn than C++, Java, or Visual Basic, and I learned those decently well as a high schooler or undergrad even, but I burned out and gave up while trying Python last year cause I found it boring and didn't have enough of a direct motivation to learn it (when I learned the basics of those other 3 languages eight years ago, I had this fantasy of being a game designer one day). The fact that I was distracted by other things, only did one five minute lesson or less a day, and was often not even fully sober when doing it (late at night lol) did not help, and even though I went through 3/4 of a Python course, I now retain essentially nothing from it.
The biggest help to my learning Python coding was to learn to write algorithms in plain English first. Learning the syntax and structures of any language is rudimentary, but to be able to understand what is actually happening in the code is paramount. This is why I am writing algorithms out in plain language first and then coding from there. If I run into trouble, it's almost always the case that my logic flow is flawed or incomplete. Flawed logic or just copying and pasting other people's code will not produce good programs. I think that this is the biggest obstacle for the beginning programmer.
I started my Cisco path and Chuck was the human who helped me decide without even knowing.
#IWantToBeAUnicorn I've been trying to learn Python for 3 months now! It's super tough to get into the nitty gritty. I start my intro to networking course in January at school and I'd love this leg up in this course because most of my degree depends on it! Love the vids Chuck! Thanks for the opportunity! Have a great Thanksgiving!
Programmers already know networking or at least the basics. The thing about networking is that it's part of almost every area of computing so it comes part and parcel of what you do naturally
That's a cool givaway! Though I already have it lol. I haven't started though. I'm finishing up CCENT. I was wondering should I wait till I'm done with my CCNA to get started on this Python course by Bombal? Anybody?
@davidbombal

The course requires some networking knowledge, but you don't have to wait till you have completed your CCNA (You will need to know a bit about VLANs, routing etc). The course shows you practically examples of Network Automation which can change your perspective of networking entirely. The CCNA course covers some SDN and network programmability, but my Python course shows you this practically.

#IWantToBeAUnicorn Chuck & David Bombal are channels that are "startup", but are with contents that are for "pro's" already. Hopefully I win this to supplement my studies to be similar to what you are now, Chuck! CCNA Collaboration + CCNA R&S (with Python/SDN skills) would be a killer!
#IWantToBeAUnicorn whatsup NetworkChuck! I’ve started following you the moment 4 of us chose to accept network engineer positions for our job but our positions were contingent on passing the ICND1/CCENT which we all passed which felt good lol. But definitely interested in the training and been wanting to learn Python for awhile and would he awesome. Like you said, staying ahead of the curve! Have an awesome Thanksgiving!
siiiiiiii me gusta!!
#iwanttobeaunicorn I was having trouble sticking to a field, networking or programming. Love both. This does it for me, it combines the two things I love to do. Thanks and have a Happy Thanksgiving.
Me & you aren’t so different I feel the same way!!!
#IWantToBeAUnicorn I'm a programmer already to be specific web developer, I recently got my CCNA. I love learning new technology, now i'm going to learn SDN. Thanks to you.
I just made my purchase of David Bombal's Python courses on Udemy. :)
Damn you Chuck, I quit being a php developer almost two years ago to be a NOC engineer(still in CCNA level). You want me to go back and debug those stressful code? Anyways, more power to this channel buddy 👍
I'm a Computer Science student who's a jack of all trades and master of none kinda guy who knows some front end web designing. But i'm looking to switch to networking coding is easy for me. I'd like to learn the basic of networking. When you said 'configuring a router' it was like something new to me and you got me interested. So looks like i'm joining the Unicorn club #IWantToBeAUnicorn.
L!O!L! The hustle is real. Haha...
I don't need it. I be learning that and Microsoft sql in spring. good work.
#IWantToBeAUnicorn so just this last August I decided to leave my world of marine biology to actually make some money and I’m falling in love with networking while studying for my CCNA. I’m all in and ready to learn anything that will make me better. Keep up the good work on the vids!
