    What doesn't help are the roundabouts with missing or faded markings; it's bad enough on multi-lane ones when you're not sure where you should be. Not having definite guides can lead to you inadvertently encroaching on other's space.

    I feel like most accidents and near misses (or at least quite a lot of them, in my experience) come from people trying not to make a wrong turn, or in the case of roundabouts, make the right turn first try. I'll admit, I have, occasionally, been around roundabouts twice because sometimes mistakes happen and I'd rather go around again than potentially end up getting ran over. Even on large roundabouts with lights it only takes a few minutes, much less time than dealing with an accident, although I suppose people like the car driver in this clip don't consider than they too could get into an accident...

    I tend to avoid indicating on roundabouts with defined lanes like these, rather than the usual right signal for going around and left for exiting, due to the confusion this can cause. I reserve signalling for lane changing only

    I'm actually "on the fence" on deciding whether to give the "text book" signalling on these multi lane roundabouts or do as you do and only signal a lane change. I totally see your point either way.

    I am similar with two exeptions… If the lane I am in can be two exits, I will signal right to show my intentions and avoid anyone waiting to emerge thinking I am taking the first exit Conversly, if I am exiting at the first exit I will signal left to again show intent and that allows those emerging to be prepared to emerge when I exit…because they shouldn’t emerge based upon a signal 😉

    @@smilerbob I think you're signalling right to try and combat people who don't signal left. Two wrongs don't make a right? Your indication suggests to people on your right that you have checked your mirrors and blind spot, decided it was clear, and intend to move into their lane. That could cause some panic braking or swerving. Pulling out into a round about in front of a person who hasn't indicated that they are leaving the round about is reckless.

    I thought this was handled well by the cammer. I'm always cautious when passing queuing traffic, especially if it's on my right. I try my best never to hinder someone who is trying to exit the roundabout, or move to a different lane - much as I hope others would not deliberately hinder me. Mostly, it just requires good observation, but sometimes, slowing or even stopping is required. One of the more difficult things I encounter regularly on roundabouts is having to drive through the queue - so people who are queuing across the route I need to take. Many drivers are happy to leave a gap, but sometimes you just have to slot through where you can, being super careful about people coming round who have a free flow. The good thing about roundabouts, not that I'm suggesting it should be an option, is that collisions when they do occur are normally at low-to-very low speeds. This is their big advantage over traffic lights.

    One thing about being cautious around queuing traffic is it gives yountine should someone wish to change lanes, roundabout or straight road. It also helps when moving away from lights to be cautious and staggered should the driver in the lane next to you suddenly decide to avoid the queue and change lanes without looking

    Seems like a place for this personal account. I was on the A814 Westbound in Dumbarton, and had entered the roundabout at 55.945205, -4.566756 (centrepoint from Bing Maps; roundabout has 2 lanes). I intended to proceed round to Strathleven Place - Bonhill Road (no road number) and was passing the A814 westbound exit, when the (using "P" plates; did they get their licence in a QR code draw? 😉 ) about 2 feet in front of my bumper cut half across my lane before leaving up the B830 (Church Street - Townend Road). Anyway, kudos to Ashley because I just know he's the main reason we weren't partially overlapped there.

    A couple of phrases spring to mind “Green doesn’t mean go” and “Have I been seen?” Also people need to remember to be aware of vehicles already on the roundabout and that drivers may not be signalling correctly or in the correct lane for the exit OK, this example was someone avoiding the queue but still assuming the above will avoid and conflict 👍

    I've negotiated big multi lane roundabouts where it's perfectly correct to take the "3 O Clock" exit (or slight variations of) from either one of the two most right hand lanes. I've been in the left hand lane of the two most right hand lanes and indicating right on the approach as well as the initial part of the roundabout...and had a driver in the right most lane sound their horn, presumably worried that my right signal might mean I am changing lanes rather than simply an indication that I'm intending to turn right but remain in my existing lane. But if I didn't indicate, no one would know if I'm intending to use that lane to turn right or leave by the straight ahead exit. Except until i give a left signal one exit prior. Assuming that I'm the type of driver that would even do so, which others wouldn't know in advance.

    I'm not saying this like a fact, happy to discuss it as I'm really not sure what's best; In my opinion you should indicate when you are leaving your lane. For example, crossing a lane marker. Definitely indicate when exiting a round about. Definitely indicate to show you intend to not go straight on or first exit when going around a small round about, or one with one lane, or unclear lanes. In other words, indicate right when taking the 3 O clock exit on most round abouts. An exception to this would be multilane round abouts like you might find on a motorway, which might have traffic lights on the round about. If you indicate right on that and you aren't in the right hand lane, then I would take that as unclear if you intend to change lanes, or continue to the 3 o clock exit. If you don't indicate then you should be staying in your lane until you DO indicate. I see the problem lies with those people who don't indicate, or indicate after/whilst manoeuvring. But I don't see indicating right when intending to stay in your lane as helpful communication. I already treat others as if they might be in the wrong lane and stagger. Someone having their indicator on is just drawing my attention to them, away from the other potential hazards, when you're saying that indication means that you aren't going to do anything unexpected?! Doesn't make sense to me.

    Agree, roundabout and multi lane rules together with lost sat nav drivers or motorists not familiar with layout a challenge. Add the missing lane markings and ambiguous signs beforehand, chaos reigns😅. I also feel that the UK has an inconsistent approach in junction layouts, priority 0:32 markings, cycle lane/ bus stop positioning, even police cars look differently painted ( or taped up as rented and not bought by poor authorities😅), and emergency vehicles have chaoticly different horns, dependent from which coubtry bought or equipped. Almost as funny a mixture of the Paraguayan army, which was cobbled together from 25 different foreign cheap left over stock 😅.

    I wonder how many problems at roundabouts are caused by satnav systems telling the driver to select a particular lane on the approach to the roundabout which is wrong lane? I don't use satnav myself (I don't like some annoying voice barking orders at me, and I tend to either know where I'm going, or make an effort to plan my route before setting off), so don't know whether people let the satnav take precedence over the road signs? Having recently sat in with someone newly passing her test, I asked her to just follow the signs to XXX, and she got totally flustered as she was so used to the instructor telling where to go, or his satnav doing it for her. Do instructors not do lessons where the student has to take a route without verbal instructions? When I was learning 30+ years ago, my instructor would tell me where we're driving to at the start of the lesson and expect me to know how to get there.

  • @johnkeepin7527

    @johnkeepin7527

    It’s probably sometimes caused by using out of date map data on older sat-nav kit, especially when the layout has changed. That is with local map data installed, rather than using online maps located remotely. The other problem can be when the map data on this site (Google Maps) is also out of date, if one uses it to learn the route before travelling. When there are significant alterations on the ground, it can easily be wrong, and even has versions that change as you zoom in! Tends to happen when they haven’t updated the overhead view, but have changed the “streetview” entry. Usually sorts itself out, but can take as much as a year, in my experience recently.

    One issue with these big multi lane roundabouts: Some of them are so called Spiral roundabouts whereby you enter a particular lane for your destination and if you stay in it, it takes you to your intended exit. No lane change nessessary. Yet other multi lane roundabouts are not spiral roundabouts and lane changes are needed to get to your exit. It's not always obvious which type of roundabout you are dealing with at the onset and I've been caught by surprise at unfamiliar roundabouts. Perhaps a new sign should be developed to indicate on the approach the type of roundabout. Spiral or regular.

  • @davem9204

    @davem9204

    I get the impression road planners don't really know what they are doing when it comes to roundabouts. They should stick to one approach to reduce this confusion. I think the spiral approach makes more sense, so you approach in the correct lane for the exit you want and the lane spirals out to the exit you want. So no need to change lanes on the roundabout if you've selected the correct one initially.

    @@TheSGRob Apologies for the delayed reply but here goes. One example that comes to mind is the motorway junction of the M25 and the A2. Specifically: - In Google Maps go to around 51.42488245367183, 0.23707713470731295 - Descriptively, its travelling anti-clockwise on the M25, approaching the Dartford tunnel. - Take M25 J2 exit - It's known as the Darenth Interchange - Intending to take the 3rd roundabout exit for the A2 eastbound towards Canterbury - If you go to Street View and follow the entire path around the roundabout, you'll get a good idea of the layout and signage - One computer technicality: As you scroll along, the Street View might get confused and take you onto the M25 above the roundabout, so you might have to navigate your cursor back down to the roundabout - From the slip road, as per signage, you can use either of the two right hand lanes for the A2 at 3rd exit towards Canterbury - The issue is, it's not immediately obvious as you go around, that you need to shift over to what is now either one of the two left lanes. You really need to do this before the final set of traffic lights for the intersection of the roundabout you are on and the last approach road before your exit. - If you don't shift left at the right time, you will find yourself in either one of two right turn lanes to continue around the roundabout, as opposed to either one of the two left lanes for your intended exit. This is particularly difficult to correct if that last traffic light is red, with traffic gathering in the adjacent lanes. Even more difficult if you are in the rightmost of the two right turn lanes! - As well as Street View, do also have a look at the Aerial View of the roundabout. - It's definitely not a Spiral Roundabout and yet it has up to four lanes in places. Do have a look at the entire path through the roundabout from the slip road I mentioned and all the way to the exit for the A2 eastbound. I'd be interested to know your thoughts.

    The roundabout/lane debate is certainly a point to mention. It's certainly poor planning if you need to cut across 2 lanes to get to your exit on a roundabout, just as it would be poor planning to cut across 2 lanes to come off a motorway. The problem with roundabouts is being in the left-most lane on a Roundabout is also a decision on which exit you are taking, which this channel has pointed out is very dangerous to opt-out of, especially when two lanes can take that exit.

    An indication from the QQ would have been nice, but they moved early and it was an easy spot. Passing stationary traffic on the left or right has to be done carefully no matter where you are. I'm sure someone would be screaming "it's priority to the right!" because it's a roundabout, but in this scenario you are right that priorities are not clear. It's then down to who was the most careful when performing the manoeuvre. I'd give that prize to the biker for being the most aware, although they should be as they had the best view.
