It's interesting that you refer to it as a "standard" transmission. I've heard others refer to them that way as well. The term "standard" doesn't directly equate to manual; rather, it's called that because on older cars, a manual transmission was the standard configuration, and an automatic was an optional upgrade (if available at all). Nowadays, it's more like the automatic is the standard!

LOL my grandfather tried to teach me when I was teenager and gave up. His version of teaching is sitting there looking over your shoulder giving minimal instructions just expecting you to figure it out on your own and yelling when you fuck up. I know how to drive one if I absolutely have to but I hate it now. Thankfully stickshifts are very uncommon in the US and will be even more so as EV/hybrid take over the market.

@@sergeantbigmac I was itching to learn so badly when I first learned to drive. I did most of my driving practice on a 78 Buick station wagon (automatic, of course), and finally got my dad to teach me stick on his 81 Honda Accord. I already knew the fundamentals; it was just a matter of putting it into practice. You are correct in that manuals are pretty uncommon in the US and Canada now. But if you travel to Europe and rent a car, there's a very good chance you'll wind up with a manual, so it's a good thing to know. :)

I taught my wife to drive a standard trans when she was in her twenties near Red Rocks Community College. LOL, she kept stalling out at the stop sign and got so embarrased she pulled the E-brake, got out and left me in the intersection to get things sorted. LOL A few hours later after calming down she figured it out and drove a standard shift for the next fifteen years. Good times.

I remember the first time I was alone in my car and killed it three times at a busy intersection. The best thing to do is not look in your review mirror it only makes you more nervous. If people are going to get impatient and honk oh well you will never see them again. Just keep driving until its memory. Hell even when you get "good" at stick you still have some days where you aren't paying full attention and nearly kill or kill it!

@@Pesmog I agree. On a lot of North American roads auto does make sense, long isolated stretches as well as urban freeways, but I envy the options you guys have. In the US we only have like 5 or 6 vehicles on the market that even have a manual option, and those are very hard to find. Fortunately there's still a robust used car market, and if you don't mind going back 10 or 20 years there's plenty of affordable options. However as sad as it is, its not surprising that most young drivers on this continent have never driven a manual, and have no clue how. There just isn't a reason to for non car people.

In Europe, with busy city roads, automatic transmissions actually make more sense, it's way more comfortable in stop-and-go traffic. It was simply a mater of economics (automatics were less efficient, so higher fuel consumption while in Europe gasoline has always been more expensive than in US). I live in Michigan in a nice suburban area, and I drive my stick shift ToyotaTacoma truck six miles to work, and I hardly need to shift down from the fifth gear... When I need to drive to Chicago I take an automatic car, the snail traffic over there is annoying.

Historically the vast majority of drivers In the UK learned to drive a manual transmission. You could opt to take your driving test in an automatic but this would not permit you to drive a manual car. Now that autos are more popular and EVs have no gears, this skill will gradually become less necessary to future motorists. One benefit of manuals is that they teach ‘mechanical sympathy’ and an understanding of the relationship between engine and road speed that makes driving a more rewarding experience for keen drivers.

My setp-father started me the same way; practiced for a bit in a parking lot and then he took me out on a quiet country road. - Come on, the road is easy! At like 13 or 14, both my mom and her BF had manual cars and always went brunching on weekends, leaving me home alone, with a car and a set of keys on the wall just calling for me... So, I practiced by myself, not on public roads, but rather dirt backroads, as we lived in the woods. Come driving age, my Mom was amazed at how good and a fast learner I was with a manual car... Great video! Alex is a quick learner, and Brendan is an excellent, patient instructor. Having taught 2 friends how to drive stick myself, I'd offer 2 suggestions if I may: 1) If you stall the car, you don't have to turn the key off. It's already in the run position; just push the clutch in and start it up again. Turning the key all the way off takes more time, and if you happen to be moving slightly when you stall the car, turning the key off can be dangerous because it can lock the steering wheel, and if the wheel presses against the lock, it may be hard to turn the key back on, causing panic. 2) Perhaps you did this off-camera, but I always go through the H pattern before starting out, and I also explain how the shifter springs back into the center position where you get to 3rd and 4th gear. It makes shifting from 2-3 and from 5 (or 6) to 4 easier, because you don't have to consciously move the shifter into the middle column; it just springs there automatically. Makes for faster shifts, too. Again, excellent video!

This is exactly how every learner drivers first driving lesson starts in the UK. Actually the bit you didn't teach which we do in the UK is the feel the bite point of the clutch. It's a long time since I did my lessons but I remember that we spent a couple of minutes getting a feel of where in the release the clutch started biting (and the car tenses ready to go). That's really useful to know because it means that when you can hold the car on the bite point when you let off the brake to go for the gas.

I have been driving stick shift for nearly 50 years now, I just gave up and bought my first automatic a year ago, not that I wanted an automatic but if you put to many criteria an buying a used car you either end up without a car or trying to figure out how to buy a car 1000 miles from home. Alex, with any years and several hundred thousand miles of experience, every couple of months I will be in a hurry and will stall leaving a traffic light. I bet there are very few experienced stick shift drivers who don't do it once in a while unless they are one of the people who use so much gas and so slow releasing to clutch that they burn up their clutch.

I learned to drive a stick shift when I was 14. Every summer I'd work on my grandparents farm, and we had to feed the chickens and hogs. My grandfather pointed at the truck and said, take that feed, poured into that spreader, and drive slowly pass all the chicken coops. It was an old Chevy C10, three on the tree. It took me an hour before I was comfortable driving that truck.

I learned on an old C10 too, doing landscaping. The kind that's sits outside year round and you have to clear out the bees before you could put the battery back in it. I thought I got it down pretty quick 'till the next year the owner let me know how bad a number I had done to that clutch 😂

It's funny how much people don't realize driving is a visceral experience, it's all about feel not about thinking so having to think about each step you do until it becomes more automatic would be very hard, like pulling levers in a factory very organized and order of operations based, not smooth lol But it looks like she did great! Nice job lady welcome to the team! I guess Tommy's going to have to give up prettiest member of the group now haha which reminds me, what the heck ever happened to Charlotte!??

Not to be a back seat driver, but the first lesson in learning a standard should be to get a good feel for the clutch by slowly letting the pedal out until you feel the edge of the friction zone and then push it back in. Do this with the clutch pedal only, no gas. Repeat 100 times and then start letting the clutch out to the friction zone and holding it there, getting the vehicle moving, then push it back in. Again no gas. Repeat 100x. Next with no gas practice letting clutch out slowly until the vehicle is moving enough that you can take your foot off the clutch pedal. After getting a good feel for the clutch, practice reviving the engine in neutral to 1k, 1.5k and then 2k rpm’s returning to idle after each time. Much easier to get a feel for the clutch and gas separately first before combining them.

Once you get the hang of it you can still drive a standard shift years later the moment you get behind the wheel. I never watched the tach (but I know she's learning), you can just tell by listening to the engine whether you need to shift up or down. I was 16yo when I got my first car because I was working and needed transportation to and from. We only had one car so my dad said if he let me purchase a car it would be with the understanding that my mom would be able to use it when necessary. I thought I outsmarted them both by buying a stick shift. Imagine my surprise when my mother got behind the wheel and took off in it just like she was driving their automatic (flawlessly).

I have quite a history with manual transmissions. When I was in my late teens and early ‘20’s I really wanted to learn to drive a car with a manual transmission. My family warned me not to because of unfortunate events that happened to them. But luckily my dad always bought manual transmission cars and he started teaching me some of the basics. But then his vision started deteriorating and I had to take over street driving from him quite a few times. That was an opportunity I sized with both hands and never looked back. It was difficult at first, but I had to learn quick and I did. My family’s warnings were too little too late, and my dad lost his ability to drive because he failed the eye test. And my first girlfriend also was a manual transmission driver as well, which at the time was awesome.

The first time I drove a stick was in a 1969 VW Beetle that didn't have functioning brakes. E-brake was the only brake. I knew how to do it, since I'd seen a bunch of videos and read about how to do it at one point, but there is a bit of a difference between studying it and actually DOING it. I managed a couple successful takeoffs and upshifts, but I also stalled it a couple times. I had a grand time. I would love to get more practice on a modern manual, but I don't think I could daily drive one. I live in a very hilly area, and a stick would make that much harder (especially for someone as inexperienced as me).

I learned by going into 1st and reverse multiple times. Also a good help was to move the car only using the clutch without pressing the gas, it shows where the clutch engages at and feels just like removing your foot off the brake in an automatic. I learned in 15 minutes and the guy told me that's the fastest he's seen anyone learn stick before.

Alex did a great job! Great instruction as well. One thing that helped me was thinking about the opposing movement of the left and right foot while releasing the clutch and applying gas to engage the gear and progress. Sort of think about applying gas as you release the clutch in an even measure. Obviously there is the feel of the clutch and the accelerator you need to account for, but thinking about it in those terms really made it easier for me to learn.

As a Floridian and someone who has owned several manual cars, I have to say it is not easy learning to drive manual (stick shift) in a state with mountains and hills like Colorado. I like how he said the clutch is like having the vehicle in neutral, good point. Now if we can only get him to stop calling the parking brake the emergency or e-brake 🤔.

I would recommend this video to anyone who's about to teach someone, how to drive a manual; concise direction, patience, and encouragement when they get it right, reassurance when they get it wrong! It'll make what could be a frustrating couple of hours, a good time. Actually, I haven't driven a manual since I was 20. 40 years later, I think I need a good refresher course.

A tip I learned to make it easier to put the correct gear is to place your palm on different sides of the stick depending on which direction you're gonna push it. So if you're going to gear 1 or 2, place your palm on the right side if the stick, if you're going to 5 or 6 the left side. And 3 or 4 is just push it forward or backward, because the when the stick is in the middle (neutral ) it will move to the middle so you usually don't need to push it left or right when going to 3 or 4

I usually like having someone their first takeoff to just put it in 1st and then slowly release the clutch giving it no gas. To just get them feeling the clutch before actually getting much speed. And I make sure to tell them "when in doubt just put the clutch in and you won't stall." I find that's a good way to get people feeling less nervous because they don't have to concentrate on the gas at all at first and just get a feel for the clutch. Then move on by saying, the more gas you give it, the quicker you can release the clutch to get rolling, and eventually you'll get the feel and it will be extremely quick.

When I was a kid I use to watch my mother drive her VW bug, so when she started teaching me how to drive I already knew the basics. It was just getting the feel of the clutch, that took me about 5 minutes. After that we were buzzing all over town, in and out of intersection with red and green lights, starting on hills, getting onto the highway. On day, 2 my older brother, that bad influence, took me out and taught me how to burn rubber in his 1972 Mustang 5 speed with a 351 cu in engine!
