Fun fact: we bought nice new mics as clearly evidenced in this video and then when I tried to use them I accidentally turned the gain up way too high and couldn't use it, so you still get our normal camera mic in this video even though I'm wearing a lav mic on my shirt. Just think of it as like... decoration... and a precursor to higher quality vids!!

I've been learning Japanese and German both at the same time with no one to talk to (sometimes my mum in Japanese). This seems like a great idea. Except for my social anxiety haha

Gabrielle Tillmon I always worry someone will find me boring if I do that though in truth, I do that exact thing with my own friends online here in the U.S...I'll ramble about how I hope we have snow here in the south which will close the roads (the south and snow makes for bad driving with most people so most work places close), I'll chat with them about a new anime they NEED to watch, or about my pets, back when I had them. Not sure why I feel I need to be super interesting when speaking with someone from another country when likely, that person is just as ordinary, lol. Maybe because I don't go out or do anything, so I project that insecurity with my conversations. I'll try to be more natural though if I ever pick back up learning German and want to connect with others. Great advice :)

As long as you're still alive, you have plenty of time to learn throughout the year. Just keep at it! Do you best. ;)
Omg that Amber skit was hilarious 😂😂😂
I've been using HelloTalk since March of last year and made two friends from it. I showed them around when they came to visit me in Guam and one of them showed me around Kyoto when I came to visit. We still keep in touch and it's a great app for learning.
Haku the international idol
the text to voice was pretty scary, I was alone in my apartment(it's a 40 year old japanese one) and the video suddenly started buffering, but the audio was still working due to lag, and the voice suddenly said something(if my understanding was correct) it was sometying about living alone. which scared the hell out of me cause I was alone and it was at night.
Hello Talk is amazing met all my friends from there and some of us have plans to meet in the near future. (actually using it rn) Also if you are currently living in japan and want to make friends i suggest downloading the app called Meetup. they have groups that meetup in person whether it be an International meetup group, a group with friends who play sports, meeting people who are interested in learning your language, or even just going out for drinks.

I met a friend on that app over a year ago, and in September we met up for a day in Nagoya and we had so much fun! Then later she came to America and stayed with my Wife and I and we took her to San Francisco and did some Touristy stuff! Awesome app

Idk where you are from, but from California to Tokyo, we can get tickets between 400-600$. Going to Japan is about as expensive as going to some states. So right now is a good time to GO! Wish i could go back

Woah that's really cheap! I'm in Florida last I checked tickets were like $1200
The reading function was so creepy omigod
I joined and attempted to make a sentence that was supposed to be "I'm a games design student" (completely flopped the sentence), but made a friend within 5 minutes xD
Hey! I actually signed up after you posted the last video about HelloTalk! Kind of fell in love with Japanese and been studying it since. Planning on studying abroad in Japan next year majoring in Linguistics and Language Education. Also met a really great gril on the app, so thank you for suggesting it! 本当にありがとうございます!頑張ります!😊
Thank you for telling us about HelloTalk! It's been so helpful, and my Japanese is getting better and better each day. ^^
Can you do a tour of grocery stores there? They're weirdly one of my favorite types of videos to watch lol especially the bento section! oh and seeing the prices are also interesting :D
Thank you so much for making a video on this app! I've been looking for something like this
I have a good friend who I was able to have an hour long conversation with! It's so cool being able to actually see how much you have learned. Rin has become a really good friend to me.
Thank you for the subtitles! You guys are awesome! ^^ *French* - Mamie Sophie *Spanish (Latin America)* - Diana Moreno *Chinese (Taiwan)* *Polish* *Vietnamese* - Trung Dang
Rachel, I just want to say thank you for telling me about HelloTalk. I just downloaded it and so far it seems really helpful. THANK YOU!
That skit was great! You guys really go above and beyond for the videos. I was doing Lang-32 for a while but I realized that I really needed some better sentence skills if I was going to do that regularly. Will have to get back to the grind of learning some day soon.
It's good to know that more and more people are watching your channel. Hope ya hit 1 million subs!
Subscribed! I was in Tokyo/Chiba last year. I accidentally came across one of your videos when i was searching for dos and donts of Japanese culture. Helped so much! Thank you! :) I'll come back for sure!
I followed you on HelloTalk 😂 Thanks for introducing it to me a while back. I use it almost everyday now since September! It's been a great help 😊
I downloaded hello talk yesterday when this video came out, and I've already made a lot of friends! Thanks Rachel and Jun! :D
Really glad I found this video. Came over to this channel after watching Texan in Tokyo and Now I found another great channel to watch videos on. This app seems like a great way to learn Japanese as I have been trying for a while. Thanks for this.
I absolutely love this app. I post a blog in Japanese on it everyday and getting less corrections and more comments every time. It's comforting to see people finally making preference corrections instead of telling me my Japanese makes no sense! Going from many confused faces to people who totally get what I'm saying is great and I think the feedback on there has made my Japanese much better than what I get from my textbook!
Thank you SO much for this. Will help me get back into learning german again! 😄 The app is already helpful and I've only been using it for like 5 mins!
Thank you for making this video. I've been looking for something exactly like this recently.
Thank you for doing another video about this. I got the app yesterday and I have met some cool people.
Oh wow, I didn't know you made a video on this. I downloaded the app 3 weeks ago and it's been amazing. People are so helpful and nice.
Thank you Rachel and Jun, your channel is fantastic and thank you for recommending HelloTalk it is amazing 😉
HelloTalk is one of my favorite language learning apps! I found out about it because of you guys. I don't use it often... or ever... any more, but that doesn't mean I don't think it's one of the best! I keep wanting to do my own video on it as well. It's super fantastic. Like, I can't say enough good things about it.
Ive been using this app a few weeks now and i love it so far
I've also used this app after your last video that introduce the app. The app is really useful. 😄
that's such a cool app and super helpful! thanks. I'm a beginner and I'm looking forward to this (after I get a little better) haha I'm using the Memrise learning language app at the moment ❤ thanks for all you guys do!
I follow your videos since your last hello talk app video (or maybe a little longer). I am from Germany and I started modern japanese studies. After I joined Hello Talk I found some language partners. We are helping each other in japanese and german. I will meet some next month to show them the citys in my country. It is very useful if you will use japanese sentences that you learned right before in your lessons. With this learning strategy I'll keep vocabularys and grammar super fast in my mind.
Your hair looks fantastic! I am gonna try this out!
I learned Japanese by studying it in uni. Also, different uni classes from Japan have visited my class once every semester, so I got some new friends I can chat with on LINE. That way I learn even more Japanese.
I was totally one of the ones that signed up for Hello Talk because of your sponsored video. I love the app but since my Japanese stinks right now it is difficult to use it since I can barely forma sentence. HAHA! When I get better it will be more fun to use I think. Thanks for all your videos! -Danielle
Just wanted to say that I started using HelloTalk after this video and when I went to Japan I made some friends that I still talk to even now. HelloTalk is really great.
I completely forgot about this app! I meant to try it after the first video you posted about it - thanks for reminding me!
I love the app, but you got my like because of your skit with the kitty
hmm. rachel and jun . why arnt you guys at 1mill yet!?!?! you both deserve it so much. i cant wait for you both to hit that milestone
i agree, Thank for intro the app really love it .
Love you! I've been looking for something like this for ages :)
I absolutely LOVE this app. In my experience I traveled to South Korea, not Japan but I started using this app a month or two before the trip and made a lot of cool friends that I was able to meet when I arrived in Korea. I think its really cool to make friends like this so you'll feel more comfortable roaming around having a local person with you!
I plan to use this for my French once I get some decent progress on duolingo done. Thanks Rachel.
I've used it off and on this past year. Love it! Made some friends. Unexpectedly fell in love with someone I met on there!
I've had this app since June 2015. Thanks for introducing me to it :)
I've used this app for about 6 months and it's really nice actually! the only bad part is all the people who don't use the app for the intended purpose lol
Oh my gosh.... HAKU! That was hilariously adorable, Rachel! Did you two come up with that idea together?! I like the idea of a cat social media site LOL.
On the back of your first video on Hello Talk I used it before we went to Japan in June 2016. The translation functions were brilliant and a lot easier than Google. We used it to give a present to a very welcoming sushi bar owner and it worked so well! I left it for a couple of months as I wasn't really maintaining good conversations on there but returned back to it recently as I want to get better at the little Japanese I know. Now have made a good friend who I'm chatting to! I will say some of the features have become premium so you're only able to translate 15 times in one day before paying. Still a brilliant app tho!
Can you guys persuade Kohaku to make an Castagram?? I know he's probably very busy, but it would be ADORABLE XD
I need to add Haku as friend now!! Hellotalk has brought me in touch with native people and its giving me more motivation to continue to study japanese. I was a skeptic at first, but I can totally recommend it. It's nice to be in touch with other people :-)
I am always amazed at how many different apps and other stuff is out there today to learn languages!
I've only had this app for a week and it's already changed my life 🙀💖
I feel like i'm going to love this app!
I started using hellotalk a year and a half ago because of your video. In the last year and a half I've gone from almost a complete beginner in the language I'm studying to being able to hold a decent conversation. On that little "out of 5" language ability grading, my ability has gone up by 2, which is a lot for such a short amount of time. I use this app and converse on it daily. If it's a slow day I even will sometimes spend an entire day just chatting in the language I'm studying because the people I chat with are just that fun to chat with. What surprised me the most was how many people are totally okay with not speaking any English and just chatting with me in their language. Many people are just excited to meet a foreigner who can speak their language well enough to answer all of these questions they've never been able to ask. I couldn't imagine a more ideal way to learn language than using hellotalk and I have Rachel and Jun to thank for introducing me to it! By the way neither Rachel and Jun or Hellotalk paid me to say any of this
That was funny haha omg, that mini skit was good lol
Okay I'm downloading the app right now :)
Thanks, i started to learning german a few days ago and I wanted an app to help me, and I remembered that you showed one but I forgot the name of it, I was about to look it up in your chanel! :D
Thank you so much for this app! :)
Moments was a great edition to the app!
I made really good friends using hello talk☺️
You guys are so awesome!!!!!!
Guys I can not recommend that you try this app enough. It is so useful and I've met so many friends. I even went to Italy and visited them!
Ah this reminds me. I was supposed to make a video on Hello Talk, or talk about it in a related video. Then I realized it's not installed on my new phone. Solved that problem pretty quick! Actually I've used Hello Talk in the past and it was a little useful but really, the Japanese people I talked to were great but they knew way more English than I knew Japanese so we just ended up talking in English mostly. Then after a while we just ran out of things to talk about.
i'm actually happy to see that it's not just MY cats that attack/eat the cellphones!! lol i thought i was alone!!
I loved the ending soooo cuuuute 😍😍😍😊
Love your videos! Definitely looking forward to the next one! :)
awesome app! it helped me make new friends in Japan. i got to hang out with 3 of them during my vacation to Japan. it helps practice japanese every day!! it is definitely worth a try.
I use HelloTalk for Korean and it is pretty cool! :)
HAHAHAHAH OMG THAT PLOT TWIST HAHAHAHA THATS WAS PERFECT ~
so I just joined HelloTalk and I love it so far! :) The one place where I don't have to feel embarrassed writing rubbish Japanese (and also correct English without being called a grammar Nazi.)

I've been lazily studying Japanese for awhile and I think I found hello talk thanks to you guys (can't remember) I actually already had a language exchange partner but I found hello talk was the best place to communicate with her we can correct each other easier and send voice messages vs just text when we are too busy living life to Skype each other...I've also found many other people in Japan to chat with its probably the best language exchange app ever and they are always updating the app to make it better
My cat looks like a solid grey and white version of Haku. He also acts similarly, it's like my cat has a secret Japanese twin brother
Thank you for this! This will be very helpful :D
That plot twist had me dying, LOL... Also, I made 2 friends through this app. We still talk to this day. I even met one of them because he came to practice his Spanish at my university for 1 month in Costa Rica. Cool coincidences.
Already been using it and made a Japanese friend. Pretty good actually and super handy
Haku at the end is so cute!
this is nice. will try later. thanks for sharing, Rachel.
Wow How cool...thanks for letting us know about this app. I've used google translate in the past with one of my former housemate's mom when she was visiting from south america. This will be a GR8 addition to the repertoire.
you guys are cool. and I always learn something fascinating from you! :D
Haku be taking catfishing to a new level 😂
Ahahaa that's great, I was thinking today that I heard about this app but I couldn't remember where or what it was called!! And then I got home and started watching youtube and just wanted to see if you posted anything new since the last time I checked anD THERE IT WAS!!! thanks!! awesome!!
I love you guys so much
Wow, thanks for the tip! I downloaded HelloTalk and it's pretty good!
thanks for showing this app! :)
Omg, I love Hellotalk!
BRB downloading the app!
I have it and I am so happy with it!
This is out of left field but I have been very curious and kinda concerned since I've learned about it. I just read an article and watched a documentary on the stalking issue in Japan. I was wondering to hear more about like your thoughts on it, possible measures being taken to prevent it, and if said measures are successful in preventing what was reported to be a growing problem plaguing japanese society?
Whoa, I saw you on HelloTalk the other day. Funny how I stumbled upon this video of yours today.
This was hilarious and informative. Thanks.
When I was in our equivalent to high school, we had a messaging program which we could use for school stuff and chat/mail/forum ...and it was common practice amongst us pupils who regularly used the forums, that when we replied we'd also correct any language mistakes in what we were replying to. I quite liked and enjoyed that. I was rather annoyed, that this was generally frowned upon, on other forums. I've gotten used to it, but I still prefer the way we did it in school. It's not like it was used as an irrelevant way to dismiss or denigrate the other person or their argument (that kind of thing is unacceptable), it was just us collectively correcting our language
This sounds pretty neat! Ah, I'm kinda shy/overwhelmed about starting out Japanese though. So many ways to go with it.
I use lang-8 and hinative, but I'll try out this one too! I can't use lang-8 or hinative to keep my posts small and sweet, so this should be good :) I do struggle sometimes with what to write on lang-8, and hinative is more like an online dictionary, where you interact with natives. Thank you, Rachel and Jun ^^
I bought a new monitor and it runs at 144hz...Watching this at its highest quality and I must say it looks so amazing! Back to the video....I must check this app out before making my trip to Japan this November
