Learning Igbo: FUNNY INSULTS !! Pt.1

Ойын-сауық

The OkwuCrew is back with another language video! And on this episode, we try to each our Esan friend some funny Nollywood worthy Igbo Insults.
For more visit: okwuid.com/learnigboonline/
Note: Speakers aren't 100% fluent. Excuse slight tonal errors.
Igbo is a language spoken by millions of people mostly in southeastern Nigeria. Igbo is predominantly spoken in Abia, Imo, Enugu, Anambra, Ebonyi and parts of Rivers and Delta states. However, there are recent statistics which state that the language is in decline due to western ideals. Okwu ID aims to provide learning aids to those who wish to learn and keep the language alive.

Here's a small tip... careful not to put two vowels together. The vowel on the end of a word is dropped when the next word begins with a vowel

'Akwuna' is the Igbo equivalent to 'ashawo'. But i would not advise anyone to use such an insult.

Akwuna is the Igbo word. Ashawo is an Igbo corruption of the Yoruba word, ‘asewo’ and its borrowed too from the Yoruba lexicon.

The Igbo insult I only know is *ewu* ! Grew up in Zaria in the 80s and my classmates in secondary school would call each other that. With your video, I know more Igbo insults in addition to my Hausa insults my classmates taught me. When my group in a call centre found out I spoke Hausa, we were asked by our language trainer, why is it, people want to learn insults of a foreign language first. Ahhh...I just laughed. When my friends found out the Hausa insult words, we would curse each other in Hausa everytime. Much to the dismay of our trainer. 😁 By the way *ashawo* is Hausa.
