The great thing about Igbo people is that we can switch to this central Igbo that every Igbo speaking person understands and it is not even thought by anybody. Yes, we have our local dialects but we can communicate within ourselves without problems.

@Okolink & research Tv This is so interesting. I wish we had some sort of cultural organization that documents and catalogs these dialects. And I mean every single one of them. It would be so great if that could be done.
The good thing about Igbo, is that despite all these dialects, I believe 90% of Igbos understand central Igbo, hence we have a common denominator.

It’s so refreshing to see a linguistic overview of what traditionally falls under the umbrella of “Igbo.” I think we all know that there’s been much back and forth over the status of, say, Ika or Ikwerre as dialects of Igbo or as very closely related languages in their own right. So, this deeper dive into the linguistic classificatory situation of Igbo and Igboid is quite helpful
I from Anambra I hear every thing ikweree woman speaking I wondering why some of them saying not igbo, we all re igbo u cannot deny urself.
Have been saying this for several years that igbo is a proper mother language like latin or germanik. I've also said that igbo is not a tribe but an ethnic group with it's own different tribes. I've also said that Nigeria is a country not a nation. I've also said there's no tribalism in Nigeria rather ethnophobia.

@OKEKE DICK If you speak central igbo and you have been around your own people speak their own specific dialect from the specific town they come from, you can kind of make out what's being said. It can be complicated, but I don't think it's that hard. But regardless i'm so afraid of these dialects going extinct someone needs to record and document them all.
Very nice and educative video, im actually Delta Ibo (from aniocha north - issele ukwu) and we speak ukwuani which is one of the 3 delta Igbo dialects (others being enuani and ika dialects) in agbor of delta state, ika dialect is used and has some influence or mixage of Benin language.

@@bandaqueenlove9134 both you and chukwuemeka are wrong. Delta is a new coined word to segregate people from each other in Nigeria. You say Delta is multi language fair enough not disputing that. Why can't they say I igbo. First before attaching state. Urhrobo man calls himself Urhrobo First, before any state so does, yoruba man, Itsekiri, Annang ,Efik, Tiv Nupe, and so on. Non the above calls the state before their indeginous heritage.
Amazing job, the best research ever done on our Igbo language and this will correct all those using dialect as separate language, causing chaos. Pls, remember our people in Calabar and Benue as well, it will be nice to hear, what their igbo sounds like.

I love Owerri, ngwa, enugu, agbor Igbo dialects. Though I'm from mbaitoli in Imo state. Igbo ebuka
Igbo languages have variation due to natural separation from the Igbo heartland (when we first migrated to Igboland from the Niger Benue confluence) and influence from their neighbors. Western/Delta Igbos have heavy influence from the Bini Kingdom. Ikwerre has influence from the Ijo city states. Abiribia and the areas in Arochukwu take from the Ibibio people and Enugu/Ebonyi borrow from the Igala and Idoma. There were different circumstances from this diffusion of languages (Igbos in Abiriba area conquered and assimilated the Ibibios around there while Igbos in Enugu were conquered by the Igala).

Agreed, my lineage is Egbuoma and I have family in Mgbidi. We fall under Oguta but some people are unintelligible to us and my parents say Oguta ppl came after us so we shared the land. But some of the Igbo I’ve picked up is similar to what people in Anambra or Rivers speak and when I put my parents’ specific villages under Egbuoma village in Google maps it explained a lot dialectically. It’s very close to Anambra state and the other part is not that far from Rivers state
