Learning How to Service My Transmission!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video, Anna does her very first transmission service on her new FedEx Sprinter van! We do the typical service which does not involve dropping valve body/conductor plate. Just filter, fluid, and draining the torque converter.

    Thank you for the video! Could you please tell the lengths of the transmission dipstick? I have an adjustable one. And also what is the torque for the bolts of the transmission pan?

    An adjustable length dipstick's will not measure the fluid properly in a T1N Sprinter. There is a link in the video description for the proper dipstick. You will see the black tip gets fatter where it meets the metal part. This fatter area is what stops the stick. The black area is all we need for measuring.... The red grip & metal spring is just a handle so we can use it through a loooooong tube. Transmission Dipstick for Sprinter Vans: amzn.to/31yfi4V

    22mm socket on breaker bar. Always rotate clockwise as you are looking at the front of the engine. If you pass the drain plug, mark the harmonic balancer and spin almost a full rotation. Don't spin it backwards as this can cause slack in the timing chain.

    Hello from México, question, I will replace my fluid transmission too in my Mercedes is the same like your Mercedes, but I have an one concern, during driven in automatic mode when the transmission change the second to third, or the third to second shift I feel a little vibrations, and a little noise too, and other fail ( only two times appears) when I try to change the shifts in manually mode not respond(in the display appear only second gears, and feel the engine force according to tachometer revolutions ), do you believe the two problems come from the computer connector? Or it's only because need replacing the oil and filter, thanks a lot for your answer!!

    Hi Karen. For those symptoms I would replace the conductor plate and check the control module under the driver seat. If the connector under seat is wet, clean with brake cleaner and let it dry before reassembling. Always replace the round connector at the transmission when servicing fluid and filter. The conductor plate and round connector are included in this link. Do it all to be sure you don't need to do it again. kzread.info?event=video_description&redir_token=QUFFLUhqbmdNSzFsQ2lRemVfRGNjUjhPaENfQzlCSFR6QXxBQ3Jtc0trTTVtcm9RVndOaE1pcHNYOTlTMzh0UGZvWjByVDkwSHpaSGJsUGVjUnAtNFhhQ0Y0M0Q0ZFl3cHpSRkFuZjJDYnAwaTRwd3hCdnd6MjU1azdZMUxkWXRFVDZqWUlMZzEtazNFTFZFbUNZdV9BMDZKMA&q=https%3A%2F%2Famzn.to%2F2yPsw2W

    My 2005 Freightliner sprinter doesn't come with Torque Converter drain plug. No where to be found. I just changed the fluid (6qt) and filter and that was it. Do some sprinters come with no TC drain plug ?

    what did you torque the pan bolts to?

  • @FloridaVanMan

    @FloridaVanMan

    3 жыл бұрын

    Nearly all bolts in and around the transmission are torqued to 8Nm (71 inch/pounds). Valve body, bat-wing-springs, oil pan, all are 8Nm.

    You're the first one to actually say which size torque bit to use. How did you turn that wheel to drain the torque?

  • @FloridaVanMan

    @FloridaVanMan

    2 жыл бұрын

    Big socket and ratchet on the main bolt in front of engine, turns clockwise to rotate the engine. If you miss the drain it is wise to keep turning all the way around. If you MUST turn backwards be sure to turn it forward again by hand. Winding backwards can put slack in the timing chain causing a hard yank if you don't take the slack out.

    First thing to do before draining is undo the filling point, If you can not get that off, then draining it first will be something you will regret for a long time.

  • @FloridaVanMan

    I suspect this comment got filed in the wrong video somehow? What you say about the filling port is an excellent point on differential service. For our transmission the filling port is just a plastic cap where the dipstick goes.

    Are you turning crankshaft bolt over

  • @FloridaVanMan

    @FloridaVanMan

    how are you turning the engine over?

  • @FloridaVanMan

    @FloridaVanMan

    3 жыл бұрын

    A friend with 27mm socket on a breaker bar, rotates the crankshaft from the big bolt in the center of the harmonic balancer. It is the biggest pulley, and biggest nut on the van. It should be rotated clockwise only, never backwards. If you miss the drain plug you can turn it one full spin by making a chalk mark where you want to be the top.

    @@FloridaVanMan What torque setting should the crankshaft bolt be set at? I have several different numbers I'm looking at in a manual, but I'm not positive I would be using the right one. If you have the other torque settings handy relative to all of the other bolts that were loosened in this video, it would also be much appreciated. Thanks for all the videos!!

  • @FloridaVanMan

    @@kailyfineran3072 Our original transmission video has the torque as 8N.m. All the bolts on the conductor plate and the oil pan should be tightened to 8N.m but the little bolt inside the electrical connector is finger tight plus 90-degrees. Drain plug is higher in the books, but I don't suggest going so tight because they get stuck.
