This is the sort of stuff that makes me suspicious of any specifically labeled trad community. There are communities without all this stuff for people that just like the aesthetic - the horrible, hypocritical takes don't have to be part of the deal.

In our family, the women (what our tree mostly consists of) theese are rules that are need to be kept, and they also say theese. It turns my stomach, because at the same time even they pick on each other, and sometimes call me egoist, because I do use makeup and doesn't sit like this. (Because I also wouldn't be able to breath in that position, thanks to my spine.)

For real tho can you imagine having someone order you around all the time? I get that people are into it in the bedroom, that honestly sounds kinda exciting and it's definitely on my bucket list, but it should end there, not carry over to your everyday life. It just sounds so unhealthy. Like how can you respect yourself when you are basically a slave?

@@Eris_Norregard I'll be real with you growing up my mom was pretty controlling even going to far as to beat me when she thought I wasn't listening or misheard her. She won't try that shit now I'm 25 but she jokes about it till this day that I called the cops on her because she tried to beat me for calling her bitch. She also hates anyone I talk to because they might get the idea she's a "Bad mom" because I lie, a lot apparently (you know the kinds of parents) but it's all out of 'Love." So as of this year, I'm with my boyfriend of 9 years, celebrated 29th of August; I do ask him for permission a lot mind you it was a LOT worse when we started to date because I was used to walking on eggshells and if I so much as seemed like I wasn't listening guess who got beat? (We live with my grandparents and she's never been married but is waiting for them to die to take their stuff. .no, no that's not a dark joke) Obsouvly I hid lots of stuff from my mom over the years and even now I'll say to my boyfriend "Hey i'm going to XYZ tomorrow after an interview for lunch." and he'll just say "You don't have to ask my permission just go." Which he says maybe 3 times a month I also learned to stop apologizing for everything and I mean EVERYTHING drop a pen? Sorry. Having a bad day? Sorry. Breath incorrectly? Sorry. Sometimes you just never realize it or refuse to outwardly admit it. Also my grandparents live by "If your happy then that's all that matters" hell mom only kept me around not because she loved me but because if she let grandma adopt me she'd have been thrown out of the house and out of the will. Thinking this is the life isn't really i'd say it's more like indocternation. The difference is I hid a LOT of crap from mom over the years and had friends online and irl that helped me break out of that "Do it for her because she wasn't able to" or "Because you're nothing so live my dream" mentality. But that's my two cents and no she didn't arrange my boyfriend she didn't even know I had 4 boyfreind/girlfreinds buy age 14 and she didn't know about my current for at least 3 years. Oh, and you don't even want to know what she did when she found out I was bi.

@@Eris_Norregard there are people in the kink community that take their dynamic outside of the bedroom but it's set up with serious consideration to consent, safewords, and limits. It's not just an inherent thing that is just assumed like these people say. You don't "just obey", the people in question have to seriously consider what they're doing. In this sort of situation there's no safeword. It's like kink but without the ability to withdraw consent.

@Maccer from the north nonbinary lesbians are nonbinary people attracted to women for whom the label lesbian feels right, whether due to some connection to womanhood (psa: nonbinary people can be in some way aligned to a binary gender while being nonbinary! bigender, demigirl, etc), or connection to having been raised as a girl, or whatever else. identities aren't completely black and white, especially not one like lesbian which has referred to so many different categories of person through time both by lesbians themselves and by homophobic society

Fun fact, there was a tradwife Twitter account that tweeted something like "sad that traditional household power dynamics are now immediately associated with BDSM," and then someone replied with the account's header image, which was straight up a woman in manacles. The reply? "So the use of restraints on a woman ubiquitously equals kink? Be careful about proving our point."

At 25, I was married. And just like this naive young lady, I thought I would follow the “biblical way.” Adore my husband, be available for him, listen to his wants and needs. Flash forward at age 50, my man of my dreams became a weak willed, spineless worm of a man with a serious drinking problem. I realized all the strength he supposedly possessed was actually what he sucked out of me. Thank god I was raised by a practical man who insisted that I finish college and be an independent woman. I had been a wife for so long, I had forgotten whose daughter I was. I found a good attorney and filed for divorce. Got my resume together and went back to work. Six years latter, I could not be happier. I have a job I love, my daughter is thriving in college and I’m planning to buy my own home. These women haven’t a clue. My advice? Don’t stop working. Keep your skills up so when your devoted man runs off with the secretary or nurse or becomes a alcoholic in 25-30 years you will be marketable and go out on your own. Stand on your own two feet, ladies:)

Their idea about what femininity and the nuclear family pretty much only existed for wealthy Victorians and for everyone else for a ten year fluke between the end of WWII and second wave feminism in the 60’s If you were a poor woman you still had to work at something be it turning wool into thread to make cloth or tending to the garden and chickens, being solely a housewife has been a rich person thing for much of history

In fairness - I’m a bleeding heart liberal, feminist, bisexual woman, sex worker who just happens to be married to a man...when I found the “tradwife” community I thought the aesthetic was adorable and matched me fairly well. After a year of that tumblr I saw how the community was problematic and am mostly on the cottage core side of the internet. Also; I thought my baby names were adorable. 😭 Now I’m embarrassed that 1.4million people have watched this and probably made fun of me. If it makes anyone feel better, my sons are named Baker and Freddy. No names from this list were actually used. So.

I used to think I wanted to be a Tradwife until a couple of years ago when I began to really pay attention to my parent’s relationship. My mom is a tradwife, so for most of her life she has stayed at home and raised kids(she was 16 when she got married and now has 5 kids). My dad is very controlling as in he won’t let my mom wear dresses out, and he gets low key upset when my mom goes out with her sister(God forbid she ever goes out with her sister in a dress smh 🤦‍♀️ ) I’m pretty sure my dad has cheated on my mom before and my dad is starting to develop a drinking problem. Even with all this, my mother refuses to have an actual adult conversation with my dad because “that’s just the way they were raised”. My dad’s controlling behavior even spread to me and my sisters. My sister cut her hair short and dyed it red, and he continues to belittle her for it. When I mentioned lightening up my hair color, my dad looked at me all mad and told me I was crazy. I deadass looked him in the eye and told him that as a grown ass woman, I could do whatever the fuck I want with my hair. He also constantly talks shit about me doing my makeup and getting my nails done??? Cuz like it goes against his standards of ‘natural beauty’ or some shit. Don’t even get me started on the shit when I got a job. When I got my first job(at 18 in a shitty restaurant) I worked long ass days for very little pay. As the place had just opened, I doubled as both a cashier and waitress, and I was usually tired as shit by the end of the day. When I came home I was still expected to help with dinner, while my dad and older brother just sat back and watched tv. I asked my dad why my brother didn’t have to help and he got so mad he deadass told me it was because I was a woman and ‘that’s what women do’. I was livid so I stopped talking to him, it was even worse cuz my mom didn’t say anything. Just remembering what my dad has done to me alone, I could never imagine being in a relationship where I’m being constantly being disrespected and controlled in such a manner for 20+ years. I would much rather be alone and independent making my own money than look like a clown for a sexist man ✌️

Growing up, my siblings and I were expected to completely submit to our parents and the consequences of not doing so were horrible. Our house was about control not love. I vowed for a long time to never marry or have children because I was afraid that that was the way it had to be. I'd rather die than willingly go through that. I do hope you don't let him discourage you in any way from living the life that you want to live, and beyond that I would, perhaps naively hope that maybe one day he'll see the error of his ways and make the proper amends.

As a woman who struggles with indecision for neurodivergence reasons, I would never want to be in a relationship where my significant other automatically made all my decisions for me. Do decisions overwhelm me to the point of mentally shutting down sometimes? Absolutely. But am I still a human being who deserves to have my free will respected and my opinions heard? 100%. I don't want it assumed that I'm incompetent, I want the person that I'm with to communicate with me and discuss things together, even if the outcome is sometimes "I don't know babe, you can pick this one," because sometimes it won't be, and I want to know that I will be listened to when I need it as well. (I'm also a Christian and hearing the submission bullcrap from conservative-leaning friends has almost always been really triggering and annoying. As a neurodivergent person it's just that much more important to be seen as someone who's capable and worthy of being heard and it's Not Nice to be told that because I'm a woman, that internalized ableism is accurate. Ew.)

I've grown up in a culture of "traditional" marriages and one part that the tradwives seem to miss is that you're supposed to make decisions WITH your spouse. All of the massive investments, from the neighborhood we lived in to the car we drove, were made by both of my parents. One of the real problems about this sort of culture is that it teaches women that they're worthless if they're not married (making it even harder to leave abusive marriages), and teaches men that their wives are subhuman and can be treated as such.

Honestly the whole trad wife thing really annoys me, it is something our generation has made up with idealism and rose tinted perspectives of history. There is a reason women in the 50s fought for rights and equal career opportunities. Maybe i am just opposed to this as i have seen the abuse that can come out of relinquishing your financial independence to your husband, but the whole thing stinks of naivety and idealism. Obviously abuse doesnt happen to everyone in these types of relationships but it is a very slippery slope to shackle yourself to someone in this way. You can have traditional family values without worshipping and being a slave to your husband.

alot of people like to look at terrible things in a good light, then promote it as something to be brought back. Take communism for example. Its been proven countless times that, due to the human condition, successful communism is downright impossible. Yet, for one reason or another, people seem to want to bring communism back. I 100% agree, as someone who genuinely wants to eventually settle down with kids and become a stay at home mom, I think it’s important to be aware that not only are my dreams not universal but, they were originally used to oppress women, and many women grew up still being oppressed by this mindset and it’s horrible. I think that every single person has the right to choose what they want to do in life free from influence, whether that be a neurosurgeon or a homemaker (not to say you can’t have a home without kids or marriage I am just using the term to be gender inclusive). I want to become a stay at home mom not because I was raised to want it but because I genuinely love kids and cooking and I think that being a stay at home mom is what is best for my life and is going to make me the happiest. However I think it is utterly ridiculous to become completely financially dependent on another person (why I also want to freelance from home) and absolutely no one whatever their role in your life has the right to force you to do anything. I think that it’s okay to want to be a stay at home parent as long as you are still progressive about your lifestyle and do not force those dreams on those who do not share it
