Learning how CHEESE is made in Wisconsin 🧀 (+ trying fresh & fried cheese curds!)

One of the #1 things we think of when we think of Wisconsin is...CHEESE! And not only was eating cheese at the top of our Wisconsin to-do list, but we also really wanted to see how cheese is made. We found an awesome, small, family run cheese factory called Union Star Cheese that offers tours, but after learning they start the cheesemaking process at 4 AM we had a crazy idea: what if they let us join them at 4 AM to see the entire process? And they surprisingly said yes! We hope you enjoy this video as we get to see how cheese is made and also try some squeaky and fried curds!
A HUGE thank you to Jon and the entire Union Star Cheese Factory team for letting us join you!

Oh dear... my friends know me for loving terrible cheese jokes... you brought this on yourselves!!! 1. What do you call cheese that's not yours? 2. Did you hear about the explosion in the cheese factory? 3. What cheese do you use to lure a grizzly out of a tree? 4. What did the cheese say when it saw itself in the mirror? 5. Why didn't the cheese want to get sliced? 6. What cheese do you use to hide a horse? 1. Nacho Cheese 2. All that was left was de brie 3. Camembert 4. Halloumi 5. Because it had grater plans 6. Mascarpone .... you asked 😉🤣

Yes! You made it on a cheese tour. Love your dedication to cheese and to seeking out the smaller, more independent cheesemakers. I loved your nervousness around the squeaking...haha...made me smile. You always know you have fresh ones when you get that squeak. Fresh cheese curds are also DELICIOUS if you warm them up...even for a bit in the microwave. They are also so incredible on nachos. And yes, fried cheese curds are basically Wisconsin's state food, so I'm glad you got to try that too. You'd be surprised at how many different varieties of the fried kind there actually are. Hope you got to try a lot more with your time in the state.

The squeaking was such an experience haha, we totally didn't know what to expect! We had only ever had curds before on poutine, but nachos sounds good too! Between this experience and another in two videos, we had enough cheese for a while 😅

We so enjoy watching your adventures. As soon as I saw the Wisconsin cheese making adventures, I knew that I had to share it with my father-in-law. When he was 3 years old, he went to live with his uncle and aunt on a dairy farm in Iowa on the Mississippi River. When he was 16, he went to work in a cheese factory in Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin. He has shared stories with me about making cheese. We watched the video and when they began cutting the curds, he told me that was his job in the cheese factory. My father-in-law will be 95 years old in two weeks. A+K, thank you for putting a smile on his face and bringing back wonderful memories.

Besides the care and knowledge by those making the cheese the secret is in the soil and the grass. When the glaciers receded they left specific minerals. Hey A+K, a travel video of yours was randomly playing on the TV in the waiting room at a Honda dealership in Phoenix when I was trying to get a lease earlier this week. I looked up and said "wait i know those people from youtube"...It seemed like a playlist channel of some kind and said "edited for content" or something to that effect. Anyways it was surreal but cool that you're popular in Honda dealerships!

I know I am leaving hundreds or makers out here so I apologize but these are a few of my favorites. Great episode. Yes always eat curds at room temp

The packaging for the cheese curds looks the same, and I remember a white building, but I'm sure neither of those is exclusive. I'm sure my parents would have chosen a family run place to visit too.
