Learning From My Mistakes (Front Lever)

In this vid I reflect on why my Front Lever Journey and progress was so slow. All of this mistakes could have been prevented if I was not lazy and impatient... I hope to learn from them so that my Planche Journey would make up for all my lost time.

    I did the same mistake on my planche journey. I literally skipped adv tucked planche and go directly to straddle planche. I thought my straddle was good, but it was not! Bent arms, bent knees, piked hips, etc. Then, here i am, starting over from the tucked planche and now i got 2-4 seconds on the advanced tucked planche. So there it is kids! Do not rush and skip progression, result will come if you're patient enough.

    even if your form and engagement was wrong , you still gain strength from the movement so it was not wasted , it was just uneffective , we will all be there if we keep training and learning 💪

    @@sreekumar.s1111 i did get a pretty solid straddle planche. but at that time i went to college so i didn't get the time to train planche properly which results in losing my straddle planche. being in that position makes me realize how much discipline you need to achieve the full one, so i gave up for now and now i only train basics and some intermediate moves like the levers and some bent arm planche. but who knows maybe when the time is right i'll return back to train my full planche.

    dammn this is soo relatable! I had the exact same issue with the form and muscle engagement during the advanced tucked FL and was wondering why i wasn`t getting to next progressions while holding a bad form avanced tucked FL (that looked exactly the same way as you demonstrated it) for over 10 seconds. Since i fixed my form a few months ago i actually notice how hard it is to hold a perfect form advanced tucked compared to a bad one without the right muscle engagement and i`m again on the road to the 10 seconds mark but now with a better form and generally more knowledge about the movement. Sometimes it`s definetly the right way to take steps back to progress saver and more efficient. It`s such a big motivation for me to see someone facing the same struggles on his journey. Keep training smarter instead of harder and thanks a lot for publishing this great content!!

    @@DeniM-cv2ro Im still working on it myself, but some ques would be squeezing the glutes, and leaning the upper chest back to retract the scapula

    @@DeniM-cv2ro concerning my experience it helps a lot to always record your attempts so you can directly see how your form is looking and what you could change. Apart from that i also find it useful to focus a lot on arching the back during the holds to prevent the hollow body position and force yourself to retract the scapula. You just shouldn‘t overarch your back since that could also result in an incorrect form where your glutes are way under your shoulders even though they should be about on the same height as the shoulders. If this doesn‘t help you could also try to go back to easier progressions like the tucked Fl where your knees aren‘t behind the bar but directly under the bar. I find this progression really useful to transfer from the knees to chest tucked Fl to the actual advanced tucked because it’s difficulty is a lot closer to the advanced tucked in comparison with the knees to chest tucked and you can already work on getting your back straight via scapula retraction which isn’t possible at all with the knees to chest tucked progression.     subscribed - just because you DID share these videos - as a newcomer to calisthenics and wanting to learn front lever myself and work towards a planche i find this sort of content SO valuable! Much better than just "hey i'm epic do these exercises... buy my tees and merch!" - this is much more honest content that shows you care. Thankyou and congrats on your epic progress - hopefully i can do the same in the near future. I'm merely 7-8 months in. I'm 45 years old and 120kg (265lbs) so its not easy as i'm a big heavy lump lol. But i've been able to get a solid amount of hanging L-sit ...L-sit on parelettes on the floor and i'm working on tucked lever rows with using bands to help build strength for further front lever progressions. I'm sure i will make mistakes as well so its great to see others learning from it all too :) ta Ant

    I had the same mistakes too. It took me 8 months to realize that mistake, I injured my shoulders by trying to progress faster. Fast forward a year later, I can hold 6 seconds strict form front lever. I also wish I knew what mistakes to avoid then.

    The only thing to realise is that no time was wasted, every effort counts. If it werent for the "wasted time" you wouldnt be here, you would have to learn one way or the other, but surely not without pain weather its emotional or muscular. Thats what grinding is, different people have different difficulties, and that was yours. It wasnt wasted, no time is ever wasted. This is invaluable time which you gained experience from. which is worth more than the skill itself

    Do you think staying in a regression until you can literally do pull ups on the position would help not to rush to quickly? Like, lets say: I do advanced tuck FL, until I cant do pull ups in the position I dont go to advanced tuck, and so on. Nice video bro!

    yeah its super fustrating. To me normal push up 10reps with sloppy form but now i only do 3reps but more control and i happy with it

    I injured my something in my back (upon research i found out, it could be something to do with teres major). Now i am having pain under my armpit radiating towards elbow while doing pullups. The pain isn’t too bad but it definitely creates discomfort while doing a lot of pull movements in day to day life too. Its been 2 days since this happened. What could be the reason, can someone answer this please and what are the remedies.

    I officially started Cali in 2019... and started FL training at arnd Mar/Apr 2020. I never trained with weights before.

    i cant seem to see how people start training something and dont research about it these days, lack of form, etc, all those could be easily avoided with a simple youtube search, i got my first front lever in 2 months, clean form, 10 seconds, and no, its not about "Everybody's body is different", thats an excuse, its about studying the sport you practice.

    Yes that's very true, for me I went into it without much discipline, i didn't do the exercises i knew i was supposed to do, so that's where my mistakes lie and i admitted it in this video. I learnt from this mistake and got my OAP in 5 weeks. Moral of story is: even if u did the research, be discipline enough to do them properly.

    I’m now working on my FL currently at one leg so will retracting your scapula affect whether your back is hunched? Or is more of upper back strength

    It's sort of both actually... But there's another tip where u wanna imagine showing off a proud chest during the FL. Using ur lower back to help lift ur legs will also help a lot because u wont be using only ur abs... u can see this in adv tuck i did in the vid

    More pull ups, tuck and adv tuck FL raises (with proper back and scalp engagement), adv tuck holds. Keep it simple, but it works because holding decent form helps with Ur strength and endurance, after that u can slowly correct the perfect form

    Have you thought about all that head flexion you’re doing, as well? It may be perpetuating your shoulders rolling forward, which should be minimized. Cheers and keep up the good work!

    Mistake number 3. What exercises should you do instead of dragon flag and pull ups. Because that's basically just what I do

    Banded negatives, and raises. These together with the ones in the video are enough to get the FL. But I only insisted on pull ups and banded holds so I did not get enough volume and intensity.

    one leg tuck front lever=15sec hold in 1 month is it right or wrong?

    No because one leg tuck is significantly easier than straddle/half lay... so from 15s one leg to full in one month is super hard unless u are short and lighter

    Wouldn’t you want a none retracted scapula since a large portion involves your back and with a retracted scapula your barley engaging your back.

    I got a curious question is it possible for me to front lever I’m 5 ft 11 190lbs and I can 1 leg front lever took me 10 months to get to 1 leg. My friend can front lever in less than 7 months . I have the handstand,human flag,back lever,muscle up and one arm push up. Do I have enough strength for front lever ?

    i believe you can do front lever, just keep working on fundamental pulling exercises and working on progressions. It also took me years to get front lever

    @@BreakingJJC Those are very good, it will help a lot... but keep in mind u must always do front lever exercises as well... there is not point if u keep doing other exercises but dont train the FL progressions properly

    Basically everything in the vid, get strong basics, do accessory exercises, be patient and dont rush progressions. Don't skip exercises just because they are hard, they are hard for a reason and u gotta train to make them easier.
