I’m a Native English speaker, B2 in Swedish, and have just started learning Turkish. I’ve been studying it for about six weeks now. I study both languages every day. I’m actually finding that learning Turkish has reinvigorated my Swedish and I seem to be more efficient in picking up things in Swedish than I was before. The brain is fascinating!

It is so interesting to coming across to you. I am a native Turkish speaker, almost fluent in English and now have been learning Swedish for two months. To me, speaking English has contributed a lot to my Swedish learning as there is a lot of same or similar words and it's grammar structure is also the same except occasionally differing word order. But it is interesting to hear you saying that learning Turkish contributed to your Swedish since there is almost nothing common among them. But I think stimulating the mind with multiple languages is opening more space in the brain and it helps learning each of them better. Although my English began to be interfered by Swedish when I speak it. Don't know how to prevent it.

You can learn more languages at the same time if you have enough time to dedicate to the process. No limit for that. Just as you mentioned a bit, it is important not to learn two similar languages at the same time (from scratch). I had this situation with Italian and French a long time ago and it is very difficult, because you start mixing them and even "inventing" you own words in the language that is at the lower level I would say. Thanks for the video though. It was really great: 😊

Being a native Russian speaker who is trying to learn Turkish I can say that Turkish is not a piece of cake at all ;) I already speak English, German, Spanish and French and it wasn't that hard due to the same syntax logic. But Turkish is a different story. My languge goal for 2023 is getting C1 in French and A1-A2 in Turkish. Afterwards I will be focusing only on oriental languges:Turkish, Persian and Arabic because I am done with european languages xD It would be wonderful if you could get someone in your video who has learnt/is still learning Turkish and can give us some tips as a foreigner learning Turkish ;)

Hello, I have spent almost 1-2 years in Turkish and It's been more than 4 years now since I've learned it and right now focusing on Russian and Spanish. My native language is Hindi. At first Turkish was overwhelming for me due to it's aglutinative nature. But then I quickly adopted it and also had some common vocabulary with Urdu and Persian so that helped me too. Feel free to ask any questions to a Turkish speaking foreigner :) And maybe you can help me with Russian.

@@iclaliano " i know that turkish is really hard to learn, i have no idea if i could learn it if it wasn't my native language :) "- precisely what one Turkish linguist has once written in his analytical article and so true. Turkish is really not easy as so called "aglutative language" so such in which one has to "glue together" many elements and words become longer and longer as we add new elements.

Wonderful video! It’s a nice topic to hear about-I live in the Netherlands and began learning Dutch with a middling level of German already developed, and refused to give up the German cause I found it so interesting. It is admittedly confusing at times, but I’ve had actually quite a bit of succes after a year and a half. Conversing fluently (wenn nicht immer richtig) and reading lots of novels as well in both languages. I’m a music student, and live in an international community where one kinda flows between different languages, it’s very fun, the only time where I feel truly insecure is when I’m with a group of Dutch or German speakers, in dit geval is het wel moeilijk om een woord te laten klinken, want je bent zo bezig met volgen! I‘m truly Germanic‘d out at the moment, but Icelandic is also extremely beautiful, and I have a few friends who I’d like to get closer to through that language…in due time. Succes allen!

Yes! 😉

It is possible, even beneficial sometimes, but it's necessary to be cautious in some cases. I wouldn't recommend it to a person who has never studied language before and wants to start, though. Other than that, consider what she had explained, and go ahead! Happy learning!

Hi Iclal, thanks for your insights. I decided to learn two languages at once this year (Russian and Italian) while maintaining my other two languages (French and Spanish). I find it a difficult balancing act. As much as I want to learn Russian and find it a beautiful language, I make progress so much faster in Italian and more fun to study rather than feeling like study. Of course this makes sense as it is my third romance language whereas Russian is my first non-romance/slavic language so it is a harder jump. Also I wanted to say your English is excellent but I hope you do not mind me pointing something out to you I have noticed. In your last few videos it seems you always pronounce the word "video" with a "w" sound instead of a "v" sound which is very noticeable to a native speaker. I have heard this is a common thing for German speakers actually. They are aware they often pronounce a "w" as a "v" in English and then they over-correct by pronouncing even "v" words with a "w" sound. But anyway just a little thing, hope this helps!

So I'm william and i live in Brazil I'm 21 years old and I've been learning English since 2016 and I can tell that I can understand everything in English I'm always facing new vocabs I had read a bunch of books in English but my weakness is speaking due to the fact that I have nobody to practice my abilities to speak but even this I always try to do something about it, I tried to speak in front of the mirror, with my kittens but the thing that enhance my speech was recording my voice in English I did this for 640 days for 10 minutes it's was fun, easy and hard the same time, and after all this I have the gut to recording a video in English then I upload on the KZread and now it's my hobbie and I hope I can go to the US to speak in English there, and I met a lot of people online I use my English to comunicate with them, I'm always learning new thing. It's so fun making videos in English, in the beginning I was shy but I had to wait a little more to get used to speak naturally, you just have to put in mind that you can do it because it turns out that it's so true!!!

I learned English as second language and German as third at school. It was hard. A lot of similar ish words. Hard to remember right version of word (But no such problems with Latin as fourth at the same period of time🤔). As russian I liked and understood German logic well (as you said). But English is till now hard for me and I have no motivation to improve I understand it. There is no logic in it. Idioms are totally crazy. But Portuguese I learned easily as adult in 4 month to B2. I feel it. I agree that if one language is difficult for you it doesn't mean that you can't learn other one.

This is an old video, but I wanted to share that my German was at a very comfortable C1 when I started learning Korean, and I'm having no problems picking up Korean and it isn't interfering at all with my German - in fact it's given me more energy and motivation for German, in part since I know I can't just be lazy anf immerse because my time is limited if I want to also include Korean. I think I want to keep up this pattern, speedrunning acquisition in one language until I'm at öeast C1 in comprehension (I find output takes more time and directed effort) before I start learning a new language. It feels to me like I could not touch German for a year and it would all still be there for me when I came back, if I just watched a few videos.

I would really like to learn spanish and Chinese. Ive been trying to learn spanish for the past few months but I think I've been doing it wrong, so I'm trying to find a more productive/efficient way. On the other hand, I feel like Chinese would be spreading even more in the next few years. I dont know much about china or its culture so I'd like to learn more about it. I see a bright future for both languages and I'd really like to learn but I just don't know where to start 🤷🏻‍♀️

Hello, thank you for this wonderful video, but I have a question? My level is B2 in English and I am learning Spanish. My level is A1 and I am starting to learn Chinese. Also, my level in the Turkish language is B1 But sometimes I forget and my concentration decreases. I feel sometimes I want to be stupid and not focus. Is this the reason or something else? I would like your advice, please, but at the same time I cannot do without languages. Thank you.

As a complete beginner in German knwoing Russian since early age I would like to watch a video in which you offer an insight into how learning Russian helps with learning German. I am really curious what you have noticed that I don't realize just yet. Edit: Ok, so you ment the case system and so called "helping questions" which help speakers of all European Languages deriving from Latin to determine the case. Yes, it helps. But Latin had more cases than modern day German, so it's tricky since in most langauges German cases make cases in other languages merge into one and this is confusing. For example Polish has 7 cases and German only 4, so confusion comes from how this merger of Polish two cases works like in German. Same with Russian. Reduction is hard. It's like French has more elements sometimes than Spanish and it's confusing for speakers of Spanish. As for mxing Spanish with Italian, yes, a has happened to me too but in a different way when my Spanish was way more advanced than my very basic Italian. And I also took a break from Italian, worked mostly on my Spanish and then got back to Italian and interfrecne issues happen only once in a blue moon nowadays. As for English and French they have a lot in common in terms of phonetics, 40% of all borrowings in British English comes from French, so yes, no wonder this combination is relatively easy.

Sure, you can do it. I learned two simultaneously in high school. The only thing that I would caution against would be trying to learn two languages from the same family. So: French and German was fine. But if I had tried instead to learn, say, Spanish and Italian together, this would have been problematic. On the other hand, once I had acquired a C1+ command of French, Italian was no longer a problem.

@@Aylanur Same here as a native Turkish! My German is around A2-B1 and I want to start learning French from scratch! Still, I have hesitations but I've been living in Germany more than 3 months and I am quite exposed to daily-life German. I can't wait to experience latin-languages starting with French! I would appreciate if Iclal has a specific opinion on learning those two languages simultaneously. Keep it up Iclal, I love your content here!

Bravo for that video. English is useful but now not enough: El inglés es un buen idioma para conocer, pero no lo suficientemente bueno ahora como para abrir de inmediato puertas comerciales/educativas/culturales/artesanales a países que no hablan inglés como primera o segunda lengua oficial.
