You should really watch Maker's Muse's video on laser cutter safety before buying or using a laser cutter.

Yeah, that's was really painful to watch... he pretty much speedrunned everything that you shouldn't do with a laser cutter/engraver. - Don't cut/engrave vinyl or anything PVC based (it CAN kill you) - Don't cut/engrave something if you don't know what it is (even if the leather was actually leather the way it is tanned can introduce really nasty things) - Don't move the machine while it's running - Don't run it in a closed room without any ventilation/filtering - Don't run it with an animal nearby - Don't leave it unattended - Don't use glasses provided with those cheap machines

Get Lightburn it is the best software for lasers out there. It's worth the few bucks it costs a year to use it. As for venting put the laser in an enclosure and vent it outside. Just about everything has a coating on it these days and ALL of them off gas nasty stuff. Ohh and always use the air, it keeps the lens on the laser clean and the edge (side) of the board you are cutting from charring. It also helps with engraving use a low setting.

Get lightburn its $60 i think. I don’t mnd the smell of burning wood so i put a fan behind it and turn it on, smell is light but no smoke. My cheap sculptfun can do 3m vinyl, wood, cement, etc etc.

Fior ventilation, get a window fan. Have it blow the air out the window.

Yeah, I think that piece of leather you burned was chrome-tanned - meaning you were breathing chromium fumes. Not good.
