Drives survived, but my repair is questionable (Loki Server Update)

Ғылым және технология

The part number I can't find is, 80H10024001A0, it for a Chenbro Nr40700 server chassis. Let me know if you know a source!

Chenbro usually won't work with consumers directly. I've had good luck using one of their authorized distributors, Synnex. Synnex was happy to take care of me and get my random Chenbro parts.

What you have in Loki are not backplanes, but two sas expanders each being driven by a single channel of an HBA card. The sas expander boards are designed/built specifically for that case and provide the best physical integration. However, if you can't find those specific parts, you could use a more generic sas expander like the Adaptec 82885t which can be had for 4 sata breakout cables to connect to all your drives. Obviously, like you did with your temporary solution you would need to run those cables + power to each drive. Also, be aware that the Adaptec card only requires power. It sends no data through the pci connector and can be powered via either being plugged into a pci slot, or it can be powered via a 4 pin molex. Make sure not to do both! I hope you find this helpful.

It's a sas expander AND a backplane in one. Not all sas expanders have backplanes built in

those backplanes are unobtanium and getting a used nr40700 off ebay is like $3k. maybe beg 45drives for a storinator s45/xl60 sponsorship lol???

Glad to see the drives survived and your server is up and running. Now its probably a good time to create a backup of all your important data god forbid the server dies again in the future and the drives don't survive.

I'd reach out to Chenbro to see if they can assist you in finding a replacement. It will look bad to them if you can't get a replacement part for one of their servers. I know I'd stay away from using their equipment knowing this.

that server is End of life, i doubt they would sell a part for it because of this. Used market will be his best chance. its not Chenbros fault.

@@CGGC0202that’s why I prefer SuperMicro. I have an old cse-848 and was able to upgrade the backplane from sas1 no expander to sas3 with build in expander.

Id recommend a Supermicro CSE-847 36 bay or a cse-846 24 bay paired with a cse-826 12 bay jbod. plenty of upgradeablity and supermicro keeps the same chassis designs for multiple years.

EOL is what surprises me because it can mean End Of the Line or LIfe product. According to the instructions, the product has a hot swap feature and it can mean that the circuit board can be controlled and it remembers which hard drive is broken. Jumping the power up and down can cause failure situations that are registered in the memory with information about defective disks. You should know how to control discs if the disc breaks. Unraid won't help you with that because the problem is registered in memory and some of the disks may be physically powered off. This may be some hotswap function that you don't know about. The problem could be in the hotswap feature that you don't know how to control or don't know how to control it. The power may be on, but data writing or reading is blocked and red led is on, because bad disk detected on circuit boards and it cannot be controlled with Unraid. I trust on normal RAIDs, so I'm far from using unrad, but the same problem affects unraid.

First i thought it is server from 45 drives. Ask Chenbro if they have replacement part for their chassis. From what I saw it is not just backplane but SAS Expander. So fixing it would be harder then just backplane.

what you need is JBOD Enclosures, Dell SC200 or MD1200 have 4 of them problem solved they are cheap on ebay and all you need is something like a LSI-9200-8e or Dell H200e HBA. Could also go for those Qnap 24 bay jbods but make sure you have the EMM Controller.

The cause of the fault is one component and the faulty component or chip is connected to all 4 connectors where the red led is constantly on. I think of a bad solder joint or broken chip, if all caps are ok. A broken cap turns into a resistor or a short circuit. A broken cap can heat up and can be found with a thermal camera. You can also find other broken components with a thermal camera.

I've fixed a lots of electronics, but I don't have the necessary tools, because old job is gone. I have skill, but not tools whats i needed. I am the man how fix many thing very long time a go before KZread platform. I was working in a factory, if I got 100 or more non-functioning circuit boards in front of me, I fixed them in 2-3 days and that included the tests after which the circuit board could be put on sale. I had to work overtime because of these, but I fixed all circuit boards. The circuit board may have some sort of memory that keeps information about hard drives that don't work, and that could be one option. About 4 times I have had to perform a RAID system disk check. I've even gotten SSD drives working again, but that program wasn't intended for normal users of the product.

Maybe you can find a used server case that still has servicable sas expanders in it even if the rest of the case may have problems. If you are lucky maybe find a used case that is totally serviceable and just put all of your serviceable parts into the new case and keep the Loki case as spare parts.
