    I just want to take a moment to thank you for the clear and concise format of your videos. After 20+ years working in the software development industry, I am still learning "new old" stuff (things I know, but I did not know it the way I'm supposed to haha). My role often takes me deep into IT planning and troubleshooting territory and this is very helpful in allowing me to work with my counterparts myself, instead of waiting for the real IT/Security folks to be available. Or at least I can take a stab at the surface layer troubleshooting before I call in the big guns.

    I've been a sys admin since 1998 One thing that is missing from training, one of the biggest challenges, is coming into an organization.... where the designers are long gone... and you have a network of systems that you must manage and maintain.... with nobody who can clearly identify and articulate what is going on. Group Policy could contain hundreds of GPOs that may not even be needed anymore. I would love to see some videos on how to better analyze and clean up these things.

So many teaching videos start from a clean slate . . but few of us get to do that outside of a lab environment. And I can't just delete and start over when we have sites all over and someone depending on something that GPO is doing. :-)

    I know what is hosts record, name server record and you actually demonstrate how to add a hosts and exchange server into server zone. But, what is SOA record and what it actually does for the server?

  • @AndyMaloneMVP

    @AndyMaloneMVP

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Lay great question. An SOA, start of authority record is exactly that it means that your DNS server has authority for that name zone. In many cases, this can be hosted by an ISP or other web hosting company. But essentially it’s this record that has authority to look up the authorised DNS zone.

  • @AndyMaloneMVP

    @AndyMaloneMVP

    Жыл бұрын

    You will need to configure an SOA or start of authority record which should point to your public IP address which you can assign to your server. In addition you will also configure your DNS server to NS or name server

    So when I go to create my domain controller in windows server I was told to use .local and not .com as .local is more secure. If I create the DC in windows server as .local and register it as .com in my DNS will that interfere at all or cause any issues?

  • @AndyMaloneMVP

    @AndyMaloneMVP

    Жыл бұрын

    Microsoft used to advise this years ago. The local domain name is a non-routable domain name and is perfect for internal use. For DNS, you will notice that you will have a local domain name plus you can also add COM domain names which are routable and you would need to have authority for these. You will have noticed that Microsoft use domain names like a datum.com or con todo.com These are for internal use and for training purposes. The local domain name is fine and if you ever wanted to use a live domain name in your environment. Once you’ve added it in DNS you can then go to active directory domains and trusts. Right click in the White area and you can add additional domain names here, for example, bobsboats.com I suggest looking at some documentation, learn.microsoft.com all the best
