Learn to wheelie a 29 inch BMX bike - from a 47 year old dad.

I talk about how I learned to ride wheelies on my SE Racing Big Ripper. I cover bike set up and geometry to feathering brakes.

    Hey, thanks Rick! Good luck on them. Take your time and give your brain time to adjust to the feeling of that weightless balance point. Wheelies are a learned feeling because once you hit that balance point, you're not really thinking about the tap/pedal mechanic. It's like shifting a car if you've driven a stick/manual transmission. I had to learn the sequence of clutch, shift, gas, release clutch - but now it I just do it without even thinking. Wheelies are the same thing.

    Lower gears, taller bars, laid back seat post, = super easy to wheelie. I built a 26" beach cruiser with the intention to turn it into a wheelie machine. Now its running a 25" tall 40" wide handle bar, 43" sissy bar, and a 21.5" flaming banana seat. I decided since I am 49, I better have a few gears. So its a 7 speed. I had to buy a tandem rear shift cable, so I could get it to the shifter. I love riding wheelies on my cruiser!!! 😎

    timZ Channel thanks Tim. Practice is what it really comes down to. You’re training your brain to feather the brake almost involuntary while you pedal. Like shifting a car - you just do it after awhile without thinking. I’d go with small increments in the back. One tooth at a time or maybe two at a time for the front sprocket. Changing one in the freewheel is the same as changing two in the sprocket for example. I think RideOutSupply only goes up to 17 so I’d look at lowering the sprocket size to a 37 or so🤘

    Cult and Sunday make great bikes. I own a Sunday Model C actually. I grew up on 4130 bikes. I don’t honestly care about the material as much as I care about geometry. Cult and Sunday produce a big bike but they’re not investing in the scene or sponsoring big bike riders so nobody really knows much about their bikes. I prefer to spend my money on SE / Throne / Haro - brands that are investing in the sport of big BMX bikes. I have a buddy who rides a cult and loves it. The OM Duro XL feels nice. It's 4130. Doesn't feel small to me at all. I know Matt Rickard rides for SE Bikes and he's 6'5 tall. He rides a Big Ripper with 10" rise bars and has the best bike-control in the game. The Sunday High C with some taller bars will also feel pretty good looking at the geometry. My buddy Reck rides a Cult Devotion 29 with 9" bars. He's a taller guy and says it feels perfect. Best advice. Go with a 29 from Cult, Sunday, or SE and add some taller bars and you'll be good. I feel pretty confident saying that.

    Hi, does tire pressure play a part? If so what is recommended?

  • @BigBikeBMX

    @BigBikeBMX

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes. I run my tires at full suggested PSI on the side of the tire. The more pressure you have, the less resistance you have and things are easier.

    @@BigBikeBMX thank you for the tip. is there a gear ratio that will make it easier or more comfortable or is it just preference? I have a 29 GT 33:16 which came stock with the bike. I’ve heard you mention you run a 33:17.

    That’s a really common question. Both brands make a solid bike at that price point. Both are strong bikes. I’ve never ridden a Throne myself but my friends who have love them. The integrated chain tensioners on the throne are nice. Big flyers are comfy. You’ll be happy with either option for basic riding and wheelies. They’ll both hold up to abuse with some minor upgrades. If you can find a shop, try and ride them both. I interviewed Tucker who rides for Throne - check out the interview in my videos. I asked him the difference between them both🤘

    Are you lifting off the pedal then smashing on it or is your foot always on the pedal and you just push harder with the dominate foot then pull up. Also what clock position is the crank when you mash on it to pop the wheelie
